The EFL Lesson Stages

The EFL Lesson Stages

Author(s): Iozefina Șandor / Language(s): English Issue: 18/2019

Starting from Sinclair and Coulthard’s (1975) theory of lesson stages, this paper focuses on teacher talk, mainly on the language used to introduce the new lesson and to round it off. The two sequences are considered to be connected not only in terms of teaching logic, but also in terms of the language a teacher uses when initiating, going through and concluding these stages. The small scale study this paper describes aims at analyzing to what extend and how exactly the connection between the two stages is made, in teacher’s language terms, by focusing on ten EFL lessons taught by two Romanian teachers to beginner and, respectively, to lower intermediate students.

ROMANSKO-CRNOGORSKI JEZIČKI DODIRI KROZ ISTORIJU

Author(s): Aleksandra Banjević / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 5/2011

Language contacts can be studied in three directions: language acquisition; b) language borrowing; c) translation. In this paper all three directions are investigated. The process of language borrowing is analysed on four levels: the phonological, the morphological, the semantic and the syntactic levels. The adaptation of a model (a foreign word) shows two kinds of changes: primary and secondary changes which take place on all four levels. The adaptation on the quoted levels is carried out according to the three types of transphonemization (zero, compromise and free), three types of transmorphemization (zero, compromise and complete) and according to the degree of the change of meaning on the semantic level.

Integration of creativity-developing activities in foreign language learning: students’ attitude

Integration of creativity-developing activities in foreign language learning: students’ attitude

Author(s): Liudmila Dulksnienė,Nemira Mačianskienė / Language(s): English Issue: 16/2020

The increasing significance of science and more intensive cooperation with foreign partners have created demands for plurilingual specialists, capable of providing solid research-based solutions, able to read the most advanced professional literature in a foreign language, participate in international conferences with foreign partners, negotiate and cooperate in scientific and subject-oriented activity while freely communicating in several foreign languages. However, in the case of specialized higher education institutions, such as medical or agricultural universities, foreign language learning is often oriented to the learning of occupational terminology; whereas acquisition of plurilingual communicative competence is much more than linguistic competence, it is a multifaceted competence and its acquisition can be enhanced by integrating creativity-developing activities into the program curricula. The aim of the study was to reveal the students’ attitude towards the integration of creativity development when studying foreign languages at a higher education institution. The generalized results of the study suggest that even though students considered linguistic competence (vocabulary and grammar) to be most important in language learning, yet they valued the acquisition of socio-cultural competence as important in communicating cross-culturally. The students’ attitude to the application of the elements of art in foreign language classes was positive, as these elements increased their interest and motivation in learning; integration of drawing and creation activities facilitated communication; the assignments became motivating and useful when communicating on intercultural topics. The students also positively evaluated the teacher’s work, the teacher’s assistance and positive approach to the evaluation of application of the elements of art by the students, which was the key element in the success of such classes. Unadapted English loans in Romanian advertisements targeting women

Unadapted English loans in Romanian advertisements targeting women

Author(s): Bianca Dabu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

The linguistic analysis of advertisements targeting women which contain unadapted English loans in Romanian focuses on the following directions: the relation between the social status of women as customers and the international products and the presence of English loans in the advertisements for such products.Nowadays, marketing cannot exist without the concept of culture. Schiffman, Hansen and Kanuk (2008, 368) defined culture as “the sum total of learned beliefs, values, and customs that serve to direct the consumer behaviour of members of a particular society”. Culture determines the identity of a human group in the same way as personality determines the identity of an individual. People with similar lifestyle are likely to affiliate to the same values that are used ”to differentiate and position brands vis-à-vis competitive brands” (Mooij 2010, 45). Age, gender, sexual orientation, regional, ethical, religious elements are used by marketers to segment consumers to influence their behaviour. What it means to be a man or a woman in our society is heavily influenced by cultural notions.“Gender role stereotyping as a communication strategy was often used by advertisers to establish a shared experience of identification with the consumers” (Hovland et al. 2005, qtd. in Chan and Cheng 2012, 83). Men and women process advertising messages differently. Since advertising both reflects and contributes to culture it is obvious that advertisements targeting women will envisage both the traditional and non-conformist stereotypes of women’s role in society. In the process of advertising and marketing, communication developing advertising messages involves a close understanding of different forms of linguistic typologies. The persuasion induced by English words or slogans, for example, makes the buyer create mental stereotypes connected to social status, appreciation or esteem needs. In Romania, glossy magazines display the largest number of advertisements using English loans (AUEL) as promoters of social status.

Yenilenmiş Bloom Taksonomisine Göre Güncel Türkçe Öğretim Programları

Author(s): Efecan Karagöl / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2020

Language teaching aims to make the student competent in terms of language skills. This competence is possible with the existence of curricula prepared according to 21st century skills. In order to achieve these goals in a healthy way, the structure of the acquisitions in the curriculum is important. One of the taxonomic approaches that set out principles for these structures is the revised Bloom taxonomy. Revised Bloom taxonomy constructs gains centered on noun and verb. It classifies the gains from the lower to the upper level (remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating) cognitively. The aim of the study is to evaluate the acquisition verbs in current Turkish curriculum in terms of cognitive strategies. The study was planned as a qualitative case study. As a result of the study, it was determined that the gains that provide high level cognitive skills were given little place in the programs.

Instructor L1 Use and Its Impact on L2 Classroom Learning

Author(s): Farah Ali / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Despite a general tendency to avoid L1 use in the L2 classroom, pedagogical research has recently begun to challenge the predominantly monolingual approach to L2 teaching, and reassign the role of the L1 as a useful tool for both instructors and learners (Cook, 2001; Levine, 2011; Turball & Dailey O’Cain, 2009). However, while it is evident from previous research that the L1 serves several functions in the L2 classroom - and perhaps has an unavoidable presence that should be acknowledged - few studies look at how L1 use can positively impact L2 learners' classroom experiences and learning outcomes. The present study looks at instructor L1 use as it relates to learners’ perceptions of their learning, as well as actual outcomes in terms of grammatical competence. Using data collected from a pilot study as well as an expanded follow-up study, this article aims to investigate the use of the L1 (English) in the L2 (Spanish) classroom in terms of instructor use and its relation to learners’ perceived competence in L2 grammar. Results from both studies conform to previous findings in terms of the contexts in which the L1 is used by instructors. Furthermore, these results suggest that the L1 plays an important role in facilitating communication and establishing a rapport between instructors and learners, and through this may also positively impact learners' confidence and perceived competence in L2 grammar.

A Corpus Linguistics Investigation into Phrasal Verbs in British Academic Spoken English

Author(s): Fatma Kübra Durna,Okan Güneş / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

This current study aims to shed a new light into the usage of phrasal verbs, which are one of the most avoided multi-word constructions for English learners but widely used by native speakers of English in BASE (British Academic Spoken English). The purpose of this study is to identify which phrasal verbs are used more frequently in BASE and how the findings might be utilized in educational settings. To do this, three lexical verbs (go, come and take) combining phrasal verbs with nine adverbial particles and forming 27 phrasal verbs were analysed using 1.742.886 running words in BASE. BNC (British National Corpus) was used as the core data for selecting lexical verbs and adverbial particles by benefiting from the research of Gardner and Davies (2007). The results reveal some similarities between BNC and BASE in terms of phrasal verb usage and the paper exemplifies some ways to teach phrasal verbs in the light of the analyses.

The Integration of Digital Technologies into the Teaching of English in Medicine Section Research Articles

Author(s): Tho Doan Vo,Hien Thi Thanh Dao,Phong Thanh Nguyen,Lien My Tran / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

English for Medical Purposes (EMP) has been a significant part in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In recent years, the teaching of Medical English has changed considerably to meet the needs of new generation of learners who have grown up in the advance of digital technologies. This study explores how EMP teachers at a university in the south of Vietnam used digital technologies to facilitate their teaching of Medical English. The digital age learning matrix described as an evaluation tool by Starkey (2011) was applied to identify aspects of learning occurring during the teaching practices with digital technologies (Starkey, 2011). Data were collected from interviews with 15 teacher participants in the Department of Foreign Languages at the research site. The result showed that all teachers perceived the benefits of integrating digital technologies into teaching activities, but their use of technologies remained limited. Findings also revealed some potential uses of web-based tools and applications in teaching activities triggering students’ learning aspects. The study suggested that teachers in a digital age need to understand how to apply learning theories into their teaching practices and the digital age learning matrix could be a planning tool for teachers using digital technologies in teaching activities.

The Integration of Technology in Idiomatic Language Instruction: A Synthesis of Research in L2 Contexts

Author(s): Quang Nam Pham,Elizabeth Cornet Ovalles,Eric Lau / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

With the development of technology, the instruction of idiomatic language has been mediated with language games, applications, or movie clips. Because research has been conducted to explore the constraints and affordances of integrating technological tools into idiomatic language curriculum, a synthesis paper that seeks to review recent empirical studies in this topic is necessary. This paper thus aims to synthesize 14 research articles published within the last 10 years. The main focus is to present holistically the research contexts, participants, design and findings among these 14 articles. It was found that technology had positive impacts on student acquisition of idiomatic language. Drawing from the synthesis results, this paper also discusses some pedagogical implications for effective integration of technology into idiomatic language classrooms.
