From its first publication, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has stirred discussions and controversies. The novel has been labelled as the first novel of several literary genres (such as science fiction or dystopia). Our argument is that Frankenstein is the first feminist dystopia, since it is influenced by feminist ideas, especially by Mary Wollstonecraft’s (Mary Shelley’s mother) and portrays a world that is a “bad place” for women. Could the exclusion of women from male narratives be read as a mere description of the society of that time or as a social commentary?

The article addresses aspects of an individual’s identity molded by the State in a dystopian society in which conformity creates absurdities such as mass sterilization and mass euthanasia advertised as entertainment or as an antidote to boredom. Like its real counterpart, the totalitarian system imagined by Evelyn Waugh in Love Among the Ruins (1953) aims at reversing a democratic and common sensical set of values. The State imposes a New World disconnected completely from the perennial and moral old one to make room for the social mighty project of the New Man.

Herta Müller’s The Hunger Angel/ Atemschaukel is an innovative attempt to remember and narrate traumatic experiences. The novel reads like a document and, at the same time, like fiction. Through a complex overlapping and poetic condensation of the most diverse memories, Herta Müller has created a place where she and her readers commemorate all those who perished or were exterminated in dictatorships, labour camps and death camps. The challenge is to keep lived memories alive by reinventing them in the process of post-memorial writing.

Published in 2012, Medusa is the fifth novel by Ricardo Menéndez Salmón, a young Asturian author and an important novelist in the panorama of contemporary Spanish literature. Although the novel plot would seem quitesimple – a PhD candidate is writing a thesis on the iconography of evil in the 20th century and ends up reconstructing the biography of Prohaska, a young German who, thanks to his passion for drawing and photography, becomes a propagandist of the Nazi regime – the work results from a complex stratification of different genres and levels of reading, such as the narration of the main historical events in the 20th century; the reflections about existence and the characteristics of human nature; the value of the written word, literature and art as a manifestation and expression of a reality in which time and its passage are essential, captured and therefore communicated to catch the essence of memory and its legacy.

The third novel of "Exile Trilogy", „Salvarea de ostrogoți” sau „Prigoniți-l pe Boețiu” is published in 1983 and translated into Romanian, ten years later in 1993. The novel, considered by the exegetes of the horian work, is the nucleus of the "Trilogy of exile", summing up the most eloquent, the conviction of the writer Vintilă Horia that literature is not an occupation, but it is a "technique of knowledge," a good ground for approaching various techniques of human knowledge such as physics, philosophy, psychology, theology, etc. The epic approach focuses on the exile experienced by Toma Singuran in Bărăgan, the author thus placing us, in a current reality of his time, Romania in the context of the communist regime, thus realizing a novel of the obsessive decade, different from everything has been written so far. Condemned to loneliness, Toma Singuran becomes the archetype of the inner exile, a human typology created by the totalitarian regime in Romania after the Second World War. On the whole, the novel reproduces the idea of victory through suffering. Exile thus becomes a space of knowledge through pain, sufferance, and all that involves separation. Also, as a decisive experience, with dramatic nostalgia, exile appears as a way of purification and initiation in the deep secrets of existence that are necessarily spiritual.

In neo-historical fiction, parodic intertextuality specific to historiographic metafiction diminishes in favor of an exotic discourse, because it is implicitly a camouflage, deconstruction and fundamental reconstruction based on spectacularity. We aim to explore the strategies of representing the past in the novel The Life of Kostas Venetis by Octavian Soviany. The novel The Life of Kostas Venetis presents the mystery of the life of the young Kostas Venetis, from the late19 th century, who is experiencing a spectacular change.The book was conceived around a real name, discovered by her girlfriend Nora Iuga, in a Berlin cemetery. Intertextuality, fiction, violence and scenic descriptions make their presence felt abundantly.

The paper expands upon the influential scientist and mathematician, Jules Henri Poincaré`s theory, with soft touches upon literary texts. One of the most well-known theories that Poincaré has elaborated is that of relativity. Poincaré is also the philosopher who discovered a chaotic deterministic system. Our concern will be to underline the basic issues related to the fact that Poincaré discovered that the evolution of this kind of system is chaotic, which means that even a small perturbation in the initial state , for example a change in the initial position, could produce another later state which would be generated by the unperturbed system. The final state which would occur could not be predicted unless the change is detectable. This is the manner in which Poincarés research demonstrated that determinism and predictibility are two distinct issues. The systems are applied to different fields, such as weather, population dynamics or the structure of life.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse whether the poltergeist in Toni Morrison’s novel is a paranormal or a psychological phenomenon. The paper will argue that the so-called ghost is just an element of grief according to Freud’s theory, a symbol of Sethe’s past. The name Beloved suggests an attachment of Sethe to the ghost, alluding to her affection for what she has lost. At the same time, Sethe needs to accept the loss, in order to be healthy. The ghost is also a part of Sethe herself, of what she was then, in conflict with what she is now. The past of Sethe is the past of her entire race, which becomes traumatic at a personal level not just at a public, historical level. Sethe needs to reconcile past and present in order to reconcile her own past and present identity and come to terms with her own present situation. Sethe’s situation reminds of that of the PTSD patients who are constantly disturbed by an imaginary repetition of the traumatic incident.

The present paper aims at highlighting the importance of naming in Louise Erdrich’s novel entitled The Antelope Wife. Giving a name to a person, an animal or even an object is of paramount importance within the framework of the Native American culture as it creates his/ her/ its own identity and history, thus naming is presented just like putting a mark or a stamp on somebody/ something. Erdrich’s novel is rich in many interesting names which have deep significations. Thus, naming has a tradition that is enrooted in the Native American past and the process of naming is related to nature in the Ojibwa community having the ability to influence one’s destiny.

Cristina Sánchez Andrade is a contemporary Spanish author very much appreciated for her novels in both Spain and Europe. In Las Inviernas (or The Winterlings in the English version), the novelist creates an enchanting and breath taking story in which she mixes the oral tradition of Galicia, its superstitions and folklore with some real and dramatic events happened in Spain during and after the Civil War. The book is about two somewhat peculiar sisters who return to their childhood home in a Spanish village after a long absence. They joined the ranks of the children evacuated to England during the Civil War 25 years before. In Tierra de Chá, a magic place like Macondo of García Márquez, everything and nothing has changed. The villagers live their lives hiding a dark secret related to the death of the sisters’ grandfather during the Civil War, but the sisters also have a terrible secret to hide. By using a poetical language, the author creates interesting characters still anchored in superstitions and myths.

Postmodernism continues to bring valuable books in the Romanian literature, such as the present novel, published earlier this year. Ioana Nicolaie put us in front, over the years, several books which we could not resist. That's how it works with this volume, which we can perceive as a family novel, a book of suffering, a woman's book or a bildungsroman. Through shocking ruptures, by binding to life and daily life, by agglomeration of petty facts and by the reality invading the imaginary of the character, this writing reaches the full form of a postmodernist novel.

The article Matei Vișniec’s novel. Explanations for A Merchant of Novel’s Beginnings is an attempt at analyzing the postmodern elements identified within this text. The novel deals with several aspects such as the status of the artist, the act of writing in the digital era as well as the result of this work (the book as real/virtual object). The plot in its entirety seems to revolve around two characters, Guy Courtois and Mister M. Guy Courtois works for an agency which delivers beginnings of novels to authors that are willing to get inside the literary milieu (among which Mr. M). Mister M meets Guy Courtois at a book festival and asks for his help in order to overcome writer’s block and achieve success. The narrative structure also contains Guță, a dead character, but who is aware of the act of writing and Easy, a software that helps the character produce literature. The postmodernism of the analyzed novel is given by the vagueness, the authorial mutations, the multi-layered nature, the dystopia, fragmentation, intertextuality, autobiography and autoreferentiality.

The present study presents the way that Dumitru Țepeneag’s narrative speech articulates between the two coordinates, the neighbor and the other. In the neighbor's horizon, the character or narrator opens to the world’s everyday spectacle, and under the sign of the far outline there is the feeling of implacable destiny, the hope of the high. Though it seems a dreamy consciousness, the short story of Dumitru Țepeneag lives in an open space, limited only by his own fears and dissatisfaction. Between and beyond, the narrator or the characters in the position of the spectators, sliding from one dream to another, wandering through the labyrinthine corridors or waiting for something that is delayed to appear.
