Summary/Abstract: The article Matei Vișniec’s novel. Explanations for A Merchant of Novel’s Beginnings is an attempt at analyzing the postmodern elements identified within this text. The novel deals with several aspects such as the status of the artist, the act of writing in the digital era as well as the result of this work (the book as real/virtual object). The plot in its entirety seems to revolve around two characters, Guy Courtois and Mister M. Guy Courtois works for an agency which delivers beginnings of novels to authors that are willing to get inside the literary milieu (among which Mr. M). Mister M meets Guy Courtois at a book festival and asks for his help in order to overcome writer’s block and achieve success. The narrative structure also contains Guță, a dead character, but who is aware of the act of writing and Easy, a software that helps the character produce literature. The postmodernism of the analyzed novel is given by the vagueness, the authorial mutations, the multi-layered nature, the dystopia, fragmentation, intertextuality, autobiography and autoreferentiality.
