Fevzijeva filozofija

Fevzijeva filozofija

Author(s): Milivoj (Mirza Abdurahman) Malić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 68-69/2015

Author(s): Haso Popara / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 68-69/2015

The author uses relevant sources and, until now, unknown, original documents, to present to our scientific and cultural audience, for the first time, new information on the ceration and development of the Khalidi branch of the Naqshbandi tariqa of Sarajevo and its tight links with the Ǧabal Abī Qubays Zaviyah of Mecca. The paper focuses on seven letters by two shaykhs of the aforementioned zaviyah – Shaykh Sulaymān ibn Ḥasan Zuhdī and his son ‘Alī Riḍā, sent to Hajji Mustafa-aga Sudžuka of Sarajevo. Shaykh Sulaymān Zuhdī managed the zaviyah in the period of 1271/1854-55 - 1308/1890-91, and his son ‘Alī Riḍā from 1315/1897-98 until it was closed, in the second half of the 20th century. These two pronounced hundreds of shaykhs, through which the Khalidi branch of the Naqshibandi tariqa spread across the Islamic world; from Indonesia in the East to Morocco in the West; from Bosnia in the north to Sudan and Zanzibar in the South. By analyzing the aforementioned letters and identifying the persons mentioned in it, the author discovers the Bosniac heritage of Shaykh Sulaymān Zuhdī and the family, from which he, most likely originates.

POLITISKAIS UN PILSONISKAIS NARATĪVS: LATVIJAS MUSULMAŅU JAUNIEŠU POLITISKĀS LĪDZDALĪBAS NOTEICOŠIE FAKTORI

Author(s): Anita Stasulane,Jānis Priede / Language(s): Latvian Issue: 1/2015

Analyses presented in this paper are a part of a broader FP7 collaborative research project “Memory, Youth, Political Legacy and Civic Engagement” (MYPLACE) on how young people’s social participation is shaped by the shadows of totalitarianism and populism in Europe. It is based on 32 qualitative in-depth interviews with Muslim youth in Latvia and ethnographic research data. The paper briefly covers problems to determine the number of Muslims in Latvia where the Muslim population constitutes the second or even the third generation of immigrants predominantly from former soviet republics. Assuming that the number of Muslims in Latvia does not exceed 0.4 per cent of the country’s population and on the basis of recent studies on the population in Latvia, the author estimates the maximum possible number of nominal Muslims in Latvia to be 7600 out of a total population of 1.9 million. Since the Muslim community states that 10–20 per cent of Muslims are practising, authors estimate that there are approximately 760 to 1500 practising Muslims. Taking into account the steady emigration from Latvia, the total number of nominal Muslims today in Latvia could be about 5000, and Muslims practising on a daily basis may hardly exceed a few hundred. By fully integrating in Western structures, Latvia has fulfilled all preconditions for becoming one of the destination countries for immigrants. Data show that 92% more applicants asked for asylum in Latvia in 2014 compared to 2013. Difficulties and problems Latvia is facing are not local anymore, but they are incorporated in the common “European dilemma.” The paper provides a summary of findings on the main research question on the factors determining the political participation of Muslim youth in Latvia: access to information, understanding of democracy, capacity to identify problems, attitude towards elections and youth involvement in politics, motivation and capacity to take part in political life.

Islam, islamofobija i Zapad: suprotstavljeni pogledi i društvena stvarnost

Islam, islamofobija i Zapad: suprotstavljeni pogledi i društvena stvarnost

Author(s): Adila Pavelić,Jadranka Čačić Kumpes / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 3/2015

Through reviewing different and often opposing views on the relationship between Islam and the West, the paper aims to offer a better understanding of this relationship, and of Islamophobia as an old, yet increasingly actual and in many respects relevant social problem. A short historical overview of the understanding of the relationship between Islam and the West, and various definitions of Islamophobia, are followed by examination of some recent works that from different perspectives deal with the issue. Firstly, is given insight into the works written by Western theorists who describe the relationship between Islam and the West within the framework of the idea of the clash of civilizations while, at the same time, labeling Islam often as a non-modern religion and culture whose members reject Western values such as democracy, freedom and gender equality. In contrast to them are introduced the authors whose argumentation opposes stereotypical views of Islam; among them are also those that critically address Islamophobia in today’s Western society, either by presenting results of their research on Islamophobia or by documenting the dominant media image of Islam, which has been perpetuating stereotypes, especially in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on New York in 2001. Lastly, it is concluded that, regardless of the origin of works dealing with the relationship between Islam and the West or of the type of their arguments, they more often than not interpret Islam and the West primarily as two separate, self-contained and in itself incompatible worlds. In doing so, the authors here argue, they employ an essentialist and reductionist approach not only to Islam – as it might be assumed – but also to the West, while the relationship between Islam and the West is simplified and schematized.

Polityczny oddźwięk Deklaracji o stosunku Kościoła do religii niechrześcijańskich Nostra aetate

Polityczny oddźwięk Deklaracji o stosunku Kościoła do religii niechrześcijańskich Nostra aetate

Author(s): Sylwia Górzna / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2015

The opening of the Catholic Church to dialogue with other religions has its source in the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), which in many documents expressed the positive attitude of the Catholic Church to non-Christian religions. It was a special landmark event in the history of the Catholic Church. The author presents a conciliatory document, which proposes that the faithful of the Church should establish a dialogue with the followers of different religions to respect the values present in these religions. The Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions Nostra Aetate began the process of the re-orientation of the Church towards the followers of different religions, among others Islam and Judaism, which are based on the belief in one God (monotheism). Particular attention should be paid to item 3 of this Declaration, which emphasizes that the Catholic Church has regard for the followers of Islam and item 4, which contains the formulation of the Jewish responsibility for deicide and raises the painful issue of anti-Semitism, but not for political reasons. Through the Declaration, a lot of Catholics have changed their approach towards the followers of other religions. This document is a testimony confirming the special concern of the Church about establishing friendly relations with the followers of different religions, among others Islam and Judaism. The author is convinced that the document contributes to the peaceful coexistence of religions, which should work towards peace between nations.

Krug nade i razočaranja: bosanskomuslimansko vjersko vodstvo i Veliki rat (1914.-1918.)

Author(s): Adnan Jahić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 2/2015

The author analyzes the relationship between the Bosnian Muslim religious leadership and the events of World War I, including Austro-Hungarian war aims and the idea of a Yugoslav state and national unification. Muslim religious authorities and officials, led by the reis-ul-ulema, Mehmed Džemaludin ef. Čaušević, provided significant support to the Austro-Hungarian war effort, encouraging Bosniaks to be patriotic and conscientious in embracing sacrifice for the sake of their emperor and their homeland, but also for the sake of the Caliph and the well-being of the entire Islamic world. Čaušević, however, over time began to perceive the scale of recklessness and negligence displayed by the Austro-Hungarian military and political authorities towards Bosniaks and started to protest, lobbying the authorities to mitigate the suffering and distress of the domestic population. During 1917 the first advocates of the Yugoslav idea began to appear among the Bosnian Muslims, quickly winning the support of part of the Bosnian Muslim religious elite.

Sufizam i medicina

Sufizam i medicina

Author(s): Senella Krehić-Fočak / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 70/71/2016

The paper discusses the relationship between Sufism and medicine. Firstly, it presents historical facts related to the understanding and the role of Persian physicians in the Golden Age of Arabic medicine. The relationship between medicine and Sufism is viewed through a concise description of Ibn Sinan’s vast medical-philosophical opus and specific examples in verses from Masnavi, where Ibn Sina and Galen were mentioned with a brief reminder on the content of major work The Canon of Medicine. In Çahar Makala (Four Discourses) the emphasis is on the broad education of physicians and briefly on recalling the concepts of ethics and deontology of this age. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of more spiritual approach to correlating science and spirituality by using a body of work that Ibn Sina left behind and his role through the examples mentioned in the spiritual work as it is Masnavi, in which he tries to encourage spiritual potential and avoid larpurlartism in transmitting comments of his works. Through a case study, it is possible to profile the relationship between Sufism and medicine, as well as to profile a concept in which contrary views achieve a complete view of the spiritual and the practical component of medical science in the medieval period, whether it is about Eastand West or soul and body. This concept is consequently applicable to modern views in terms of the history of science and health education as well as treatment in general.

As early as the early summer of 2013 the Free Syrian Army was already reporting that Al Qaeda was seeking to found a state of its own in the north of Syria which would also control the border crossing points to Turkey

Smrt velikog muftije

Author(s): Klaus-Michael Mallmann / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 20/2015

Qur’ān is the source of all knowledge in Islam (al-An‘ām, 38). It symbolises the living mind of Divine Omniscience. It is uncreated Word of God which is a symbol of the comprehensive precosmic Pen (kun!) by which God simulta¬neously inscribes into ‘pages’ of Universe (Qur’ān al-āfāq), pages of sacred History (Qur’ān al-anfās) and, finally, ‘pages’ of human soul and heart (Kitāb marqūm) existentially (kalima al-kawn) and sapientially (kalima al-wahy). The content of Divine Word is intended for a man as God’s crowning creature, as substance of divine Being (mukhtasar of Wujūd) and as comprehensive being (al-kawn al-jāmi‘) who alone knows how to read revealed text of the Book under whose image God has condensed plenitude of His own wisdom, revealed Himself in a form of Book as the sign of His most perfect and most mature Self-expression. On the traces of this Book’s content human life has became ‘book for God’ through which qur’anic metahistory is realised, embodied by infinite number of individual human fates. God has clothed qur’anic content in literal linguistic expression (‘ibāra) of perfect Arabic language, so that reader/ interpreter of Mushaf’s text could from ‘ibāra make ta‘bīr – ‘hermeneutical bridge’ to cross over to the other ‘bank’ of sacrolinguistic ‘river’ of Mushaf. In the vessel of Hidr’s ta’wīl on the waves of Mushaf’s ‘river’ sails the interpreter as homo viator (sālik), reaches the very heart of every single thing and puts the smile of immortality on the ‘face’ of every cognitive capacity within him.

Sarajevska kermanska halija (tepih) iz Mahana

Sarajevska kermanska halija (tepih) iz Mahana

Author(s): Haris Dervišević / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 65/2016

The main focus of this work is a 17th century Safavid carpet in the collection of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The present article seeks to show all aspects of the great value of this carpet. The first thing that the author examines is the cause of its arrival to Sarajevo and after a brief historical overview the author comes to the conclusion that the carpet was a part of Austro-Hungarian cultural policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stylistic and formal analysis shows that the carpet belongs to the group of Persian vase carpets with multiple-medallions design. This extraordinary masterpiece was finished not in 1067 AH (1656 AD), as Arthur Upham Pope suggested, but in 1047 AH (1637/38 AD). On the basis of historical sources it was possible to conclude that this carpet was made for and placed in Shayh Ni‘matullah Walī Shrine in Mahan, Iran. At the end of the paper the author suggests that the patron was a member of the noble Mīrmirān family.
