The Eucharist in its fullness and richness includes all events of the history of salvation, especially those concerning the Person of the Word Incarnated. The Eucharist as a sacrament is a memory, the sacrifice of Christ and the Church, the communion with Christ and with our brothers and sisters. The worship of Christ in the Eucharist present in the tabernacle or exposed in the Blessed Sacrament shows the Heart which loves and always offers to the Father reparation for all the sins of humans all around the world. Firstly, from the historical-spiritual and theological perspectives, we speak about the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus. This mystery has been taken up and developed by the spiritual current of the French School and, above all, by the persons dedicated to the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The issue of the Eucharistic Heart was also taken into consideration by the popes during the International Eucharistic Congresses because the Eucharistic devotion embraces everything. Among those who made an important contribution to the development of this spirituality, apart from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, was venerable Father Leo Dehon, the founder of the Congregation dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The sacred preaching is, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the key tasks of the ministers of God, under the order of Christ: ”Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.” (Mark 16:15). The duty of preaching rests in particular on the bishops and priests. According to Aquinas there are three specific objectives of preaching: to illuminate the intelligence, to move the affects, and lead to resolutions. There are human means that belong to the art of oratory which help to achieve those purposes. However, one cannot rely exclusively on those human means. Human efforts are ineffective without the work of the Holy Spirit. Preaching requires contemplation, as it aims to convey to others knowledge of the truth which has been reached in contemplation. There are following acts that belong to the contemplative moment: to pray, learn, read, and meditate. Aquinas emphasizes the importance of study for those who are called to preach. However, there is also a need of the special assistance of the Holy Spirit, who freely offers his gifts and charismas. In the contemplation St. Thomas sees the highest level of human activity, the one in which human soul attains happiness. In Aquinas’s view, the contemplation of God is the ultimate goal of human life. To this sublime goal, the contemplation of God, human beings have to prepare themselves through a virtuous life, through prayer, and through the exercise of spiritual activities. Contemplation attains its acme in the highest contemplation of divine truth.

Spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola has inspired many saints and founders of religious congregations. Among them there was also Fr. Leon Dehon, the founder of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He touched on the way of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius thanks to his numerous contacts with Jesuit Fathers. Among them Fr. Dehon had professors, collaborators, friends, as well as spiritual directors. Fr. Dehon was fascinated by the personality and spirituality of St. Ignatius. He undertook the Spiritual Exercises in the most important moments of his religious and priestly life: when he began his study in the college in Hazebrouck and when he entered the French Seminary of Saint Claire in Rome, when he was searching his religious vocation as a diocesan priest and in the first years after he had founded the Congregation, before the first General Chapter and before his perpetual vows. As a mature priest and religious, Fr. Dehon undertook the Spiritual Exercises when he was celebrating the 25th anniversary of his priesthood and before he left the cradle of the Congregation – the College of St. John. The exercises were not without influence on the spirituality of Fr. Dehon and on his spiritual life. We can find an echo of several meditations or contemplations offered by St. Ignatius in the spirituality of Fr. Dehon and in the spirituality of his Congregation. The traces of the Exercises can be also found in both his decisions and his teaching directed to his brothers in religious life and to the laity.
