Wykorzystanie pomiarów antropometrycznych w badaniach artykulacji samogłosek (na materiale polskim)

Wykorzystanie pomiarów antropometrycznych w badaniach artykulacji samogłosek (na materiale polskim)

Author(s): Piotr Rybka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2015

The paper contains an original method of analysis of different articulatory sections of vowels (namely, roentgenograms and articulograms). The proposal is based on measurements of precisely specified points within the articulators. Being the most important and related to the palatal and alveolar processes, the position of the highest point on the surface of the tongue is vital for the proper interpretation of a given articulation. In order to measure the location of the above-mentioned point, position vectors were used. The absolute coordinates of the vectors were converted into relative values, i.e. related to the extreme positions of the tongue observed in the analyzed material. As a result, it was possible to compare the results obtained regardless of the size of particular illustration of speech organs. In total, it was assumed that the tongue would reach 49 possible positions measured in relation to most extreme position typical for vowels [I a o u]. Each recognized articulation was transcribed with the International Phonetic Alphabet. As for the vowel labialization, a separate procedure was used which involved measuring the following distances: between the lips, the incisors and between the upper lip and the upper incisors. Those measurements allowed to ascertain up to 6 different types of labialization. The introduced method was also illustrated with an example analysis of Polish vowels. The examples were adopted both from the latest research and older publications. In the discussion, the advantages and possible applications of the procedure were pointed out as well as limitations and possible refinement of some of its elements.

Lemiesz tłumacza. Tłumaczenie jako sposób wewnętrznej imigracji

Lemiesz tłumacza. Tłumaczenie jako sposób wewnętrznej imigracji

Author(s): Joanna Roszak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 23/2014

The theme of the article is translation as a mode of internal immigration. Paul Celan, who chose German as the language of his work, (it was the language of his mother and of murderers), found a sanctuary also as translator. In translator’s profession, he found ways of distilling the German language, which never ceased to be his “internal landscape” in spite of the wound inflicted to the language by Nazism. Most of the discussion focuses on Celan’s motivations when he translated Osip Mandelstam’s poetry.

Каравеловата белетристика в контекста на Каравеловите периодични издания

Каравеловата белетристика в контекста на Каравеловите периодични издания

Author(s): Paulina Stoycheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 100/2015

This article focuses mainly on the relationship between Karavelov’s works of fiction and non-fiction texts published on the pages of “Freedom”, “Independence” and “Knowledge”. The specifics of these relationships – their direction and nature allows outlining some dependencies between the different types of materials, especially in terms of genre. The careful study of the texts contained in the edited by Karavelov periodicals led to conclusions that can be formulated generally as follows: 1. One of the possible reasons for the existence of a “publicist manner of writing” in the stories and novels of Karavelov can be found in his active work as a journalist, but not in the “syncretic genre consciousness” of the era; 2. An assessment of the artistic skill of Karavelov, based on the presence of “publicist stream” in his works, is illegal; 3. The presence of links not only between fiction and journalistic works of Karavelov, but also between fictional texts on the one hand, and some memoirs and poems, on the other, is talking about a subjugation of the whole work of the writer of a particular purpose, about his interest in several main themes presenting in his early works, and in those of recent years. The summary of the article is in the direction of the claim that “genre impurities” in Karavelov’s fiction is a consequence of a synchronous work on various types of texts and of a deliberate quest for polyfunctionality in literature – a characteristic typical for the period of European Enlightenment.

American Studies as Italian Theory

American Studies as Italian Theory

Author(s): Mena Mitrano / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

Considering Roberto Esposito’s narrative of Italian Theory, according to which Italian Theory first started as a US-based phenomenon and only later irradiated in other parts of the world, this paper explores the consequences of that narrative and the questions that it might raise for American Studies: Might Italian Theory rightfully belong to the Americanist’s domain of inquiry? If so, what impact might it have on the identity of the Americanist? What is an Americanist? The paper argues that this new wave of theory illuminates the confluenceof American Studies and critical thought, both involved in a simultaneous movement of deterritorialization that pushes them outside their established boundaries.

Constantin Duca în opera lui Dimitrie Cantemir şi Radu Rosetti. Sub zodia Echităţii şi a Vidrei

Constantin Duca în opera lui Dimitrie Cantemir şi Radu Rosetti. Sub zodia Echităţii şi a Vidrei

Author(s): Erich Noris SZAKÁCS / Language(s): Romanian Issue: suppl./2017

Dimitrie Cantemir’s “Hieroglyphic History”, written in Romanian in Constantinople between 1703 and 1705, is a first attempt of outlining a political and social novel. In it, boyar parties take allegorical form, every nobleman or gentleman being represented by the image of a creature from real or fantastic fauna. As a dynamic work it finds its main engine in a struggle involving a substantial number of characters. The Cantemirian work opposes major philosophical axioms which are found in the narrated events. Main groups revolve around centers represented by the Unicorn and the Raven. In addition, in this dispute, the paper outlines reflections, maxims and proverbs that reflect the influence of poetry and folk elements. In the same vein, legal powers (but in the opposite direction) are exercised by Constantin Duca in the work of Radu Rosetti. He drew up a short story about the times when Constantin Duca was on the throne; a politician, historian, writer and genealogist, Rosetti dedicated the work to Duca and analysed his character in the novel, from the opposite angle of view. It is true that the age when Rosetti wrote the novel, the political context in which he operates and the cultural scale were different from the age of Dimitrie Cantemir. He tried to write a short story which is totally different to those of Dimitrie Cantemir, positioning his approach much differently.

Scientific Thinking and Environmental Education as factors of innovation in Literature for Children

Author(s): Ilaria Filograsso,Tito Vezio Viola / Language(s): English Issue: 10/2012

In children’s literature science and nature have traditionally played the role of a narrative device, a landscape background for the setting where to let speaking animal characters act. It is only since the 70s that the environmental issue has started to appear through the ecological problems, by dragging new visions and critical analyses into literature. The article analyzes the influences the scientific environmentalism had on the Italian literature between 1970 and 1980, when an ecological awareness starts to progressively develop within the country. By adopting some rules belonging to ecocriticism, attention is being focused on those works which are the first ones to be inspired by the “thought-through-connection” notion of modern ecology and which find their first expressive and artistic paths in the narrative for children and young adults by identifying, in a connected way, the crossovers with the popularization of science and with the objectives of environmental education. Through the narrative themes and the popularizing writing – adopting the ecocritical statute as a reference guidance – the strategic problems relating to the ecological issue within the Italian fiction and non fiction are brought to the fore: the effects deriving from the aggression to Third World’s resources, the need for science to radically change its own traditional point of view, the inseparable interrelation between environmental damage and social damage by paying special attention to the role played by information. It is therefore suggested that modern ecological thought has remarkably contributed to the general innovation of literature and publishing industry for children which has developed in the subsequent twenty-year period.
