Author(s): Livia Magina,Florin Nicolae Ardelean / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 29/2019

This article is built around the analysis of a document, Conscriptio bonorum in comitatu Sathmari annis 1670, 71, 72, 73, 74 confiscatorum, which contains detailed information on the confiscated proprieties of various noble families from Satu-Mare County. It is an interesting and valuable historical sources that reflects the events that followed the signing of the peace treaty of Vasvár in 1664, between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans. The rebellion of the Hungarian nobility, supported to a certain extent by the ruling prince of Transylvania, led to a series of repressive measures taken by Habsburg authorities, including confiscation of land proprieties. This document shows the extent of this repressive measures in the particular case of Satu-Mare County, bringing thus valuable information on the economic, social and political history of Transylvania and Royal Hungary in the second half of the 17th century.

Water Supply to the Small Cities in the Northern Region of the Russian Empire, 1890–1910s (Vologda, Staraya Russa and Cherepovets)

Author(s): Anna Agafonova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The article is devoted to the analysis of the process of the organization of centralized water supply systems in small Russian towns at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The causes and the process of pipeline building in three small cities, each of which became significant transport hubs by 1914 and had populations of less than 50,000 people, are described in the research. The research interest in these towns is led by understanding how the transport position of small cities promoted the improvement of water supplies in them. It was essential due to the growth of the urban populations and increasing cases of cholera epidemics in transport-hub cities.

In this interview, he describes how his world of thought changed as a resultof very personal experiences as an observer on the ground in besieged Sarajevo.Additional excerpts from previously unpublished diary entries provide a vividpicture of the events of that time.

SERVICIUL MILITAR ÎN TRANSILVANIA (1850-1867). LEGISLAȚIE, PACE ȘI RĂZBOI

Author(s): Constantin Băjenaru / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 1/2019

The subject of military service in the middle of 19th century in Transylvania hadn’t been, with few exceptions, in the aria of interest of Romanian historians, even if it constituted a complex phenomenon of Transylvanian society in those days, having many implications and repercussions. The consequences after the revolutionary years 1848-1849 felt at a legislative level and in the military, aiming many times but without success the reformation of the army by stipulations which wanted to be progressive. They hadn’t had the expected results, as it hadn’t happened regarding the recruitment and incorporation of young people, fit for military service. As it will be noticed, the legislative actions which were undertaken, including those during the three wars of this period, in which was engaged the Habsburg Empire, remained tributary to previous periods, quantitative and not qualitative.

Author(s): Tamara Stoilova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1-2/2020

Article 27 of the Kyuchuk-Kaynardzhi Treaty provides for the exchange of ceremonial embassies to promote peace and friendship between the two empires. The residence of the Russian ambassador in Constantinople had to comply with the rules established between the Sublime Porte and the European countries most respected by it. It is no coincidence that the embassy was headed by a famous general, a participant in the war, who had signed the peace in Kyuchuk-Kaynardzha, Prince Nikolay Vasilievich Repnin. The organization of the solemn embassy of 1775-1776 provided for the observance of the established specific ceremony both during the trip and in the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The object of the proposed study is the preliminary preparation of the trip, as well as the specification of the ceremony and the rules that both parties were obliged to follow. The embassy’s journey to Constantinople in 1775 is briefly traced. The study aims to present the disputes, clarifications, decisions on important elements of the rituals and the ceremony as an expression of the relations between the two empires immediately after the peace of 1774 - relations in which the Russian side demonstrates strength, above all determination but also readiness for reasonable compromises. Some organizational decisions are also mentioned, which complement the overall picture of the movement both within the borders of the Russian Empire and within the Ottoman territories.

Kyrillos, the Metropolitan of Belgrade (1825–1827)

Author(s): Nedeljko V. Radosavljević / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2020

The paper elaborates on the administration of Metropolitan Kyrillos in the Belgrade Metropolitanate, which he assumed in 1825. Available sources suggest his Bulgarian origin. The paper contains biographical data about Kyrillos, such as his place and year of birth, his advancement in the structure of the Great Church and his spiritual mission, including the establishment of the exact date and place of his death. A focus is placed on Kyrillos’s versatile activity, visible in his restoration of churches and monasteries, control of the clergy and care about proper performance of rites. Also explained is his good cooperation with Serbian Prince Miloš Obrenović, whom he informed of confidential matters not only of ecclesiastical, but of secular nature as well, including diplomatic and military issues. An emphasis is also put on his illness, which significantly aggravated his work. Despite this, he persevered in carrying out his metropolitan duties until his death in 1827.

LIGHTING IN OTTOMAN CONSTANTINOPLE UNTIL THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Author(s): Alexandre Kostov / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

In Constantinople, the first gas lamp was lit in 1856. Until 1914, the Ottoman capital underwent a complex, but gradual process of introducing and distributing gas for public lighting, as part of the „European“ modernisation of the city. It provided lighting mainly in the central parts of Pera-Galata, Stamboul, for the Asian Scutari and Kadiköy, and in some of its suburbs. In addition to street lighting, gas was also used in palaces, administrative and business buildings and in private homes. A comparison shows that on the eve of the First World War, Constantinople gave way to other capitals in the region such as Bucharest and Athens with respect to the distribution of public lighting. Unlike the capitals of Greece and Romania, in reality also until 1914, due to its late introduction, electricity was still not a real competition for gas. However, it can be noted that, in Constantinople, as in other cities in Southeast Europe, gas lighting contributed to urban modernisation and social life, as well as to increasing the security of its inhabitants in the dark part of the day.

OPERA AND MODERNIZATION: THE CASE OF BULGARIA

Author(s): Alexandra Milanova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Opera music may be much more central to our understanding of urban modernity than is habitually thought. Since its beginnings in Bulgaria around 1890, opera has had a strong relationship with urban space and the public sphere. Most opera houses were built in urban centers and came to be seen both as secular temples and sites of entertainment, in which the appreciation of high art coexisted with conviviality. This paper aims at demonstrating that development of opera art is inextricably linked to the process of modernization of Bulgarian cities. By addressing the impact of this classical art on urbanity, the paper will also attempt to show how opera houses have been among important in towns‘ transformations and alteration from the late 19th to the second half of the 20th c. By studying the inception and development of opera theaters in particular Bulgarian cities and through its focus on the liaison between music and localities, this paper should add to the vast body of scholarship in social and cultural history to do with the city, and the meaning of urbanity in Bulgaria.

Author(s): Muhammad Shahid Alam / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 80/2019

In this article the author asserts upon various forms and manifestations of differentialism and auto centrism that lie upon premises of one’s own superiority over inferiority, and upon the recessiveness and lesser value of ‘the other’. The author notes that auto-centrism of Chinese, Greeks and Muslims had a form of cultural differentialism and particularity, whereas Euro-centrism represents a form of racist ideology based on premises of natural, inborn, essential, God-given superiority derived from ideology of “blood and soil” and belief that they are chosen to cultivate, civilise, enlighten, humanise, democratise, improve in other words subjugate ‘the other’. Unlike Amin, who claims that Eurocentric ideology of differentialism is related to capitalism and economic superiority of the West, the author here finds that the root of this ideology lays in particular interpretations of religion, tribal heritage and specific historical development and social relations in this region.

Author(s): Bojan V. Simić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2019

Following the Second World War, Argentina became a country with the most emigrants of Yugoslav origin in the entire South America. Major part of those were Croats and Slovenes, while emigrants from Montenegro and Serbia made up a smaller proportion. It was estimated that there were approximately 20.000 emigrants from Serbia and Montenegro throughout South America in early-1950s. Apart from establishing their national societies in Argentina such as Serbs of Argentina “Velika Srbija”, Kolo srpskih sestara, and Obilić, Serbian emigrants launched the newspaper “Srpska zastava” in order to bring all the Serbs in Argentina together. While rejecting the “negative” Yugoslav experience, these organizations praised at the same time for the Serbian medieval past and its modern statehood from the early twentieth century. They gathered during the annual assemblies and Serbian Orthodox holidays like Vidovdan and Saint Sava. The key figure among Serbian emigrants in Argentina was Milan Stojadinović, the former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, despite he did not take any official position in such emigrant organizations. Instead, he was rather a kind of consultant to both the organization “Velika Srbija” and their leading newspapers “Srpska zastava”. On the other hand, he used his influence acquired within the Serbian community in Argentina to negotiate with the representatives of Socialist Yugoslavia during 1952 and 1953. Political changes in Argentina after the fall of Juan Peron forced Stojadinović to distance himself from the Serbian emigrant community which was certainly one of the reasons why “Srpska zastava” ended its course in 1956.

VEZA ESNAFA U BOSNI SA TEKIJOM U KIRŠEHIRU

Author(s): Azra Gadžo-Kasumović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 49/2000

In light of the preserved documents, this paper points to the relationship of the guild organization in Bosnia with the Kiršehir tekke. Here presented are the following documents: Râzi's futuvvetnama on the basis of the transcripts from 1001 AH / 1592 AD, a pirnama and an abridged futuvvetnama of tailors and merchants from 1235 AH / 1819 AD, and a tabak šedžera (tanners genealogy) from 1067 AH / 1656 AD, which was the main statute of the ahi zaviye (central administration) and the tabak odžak (tanners association) as an exemplary model of economic and cultural organization. Based on this and similar šedžeras and some comprehensive futuvvetnamas, the ahi baba, the high representative of the zaviye, issued abridged futuvvetnamas and pimamas to various guilds in provinces. Enumerated are also many other documents, such as fermans (orders) on the competence of the aforesaid ahi baba, different kušanma defters (promotion records), guild arzuhals (submissions) etc., issued by the high representative ahi baba Sheyk Omer 1235 AH / 1819 AD to the guilds in Bosnia on the occasion of his visit. In addition, based on the knowledge of the overall system of the guild organization and the main Statute of the tabak šedžera, tabhanas-zaviyes are presented as the main coordinators in the Empire's provinces with the main zaviye as unofficially autonomous institution and the roving sheyk ahi baba - the high representative of the zaviye - the Central lodge. During his visits to the guilds in Bosnia, the ahi baba would visit the main tannery centres located in the towns of Mostar, Sarajevo, Banjaluka, Tešanj and Visoko. He would first visit the main tabhana (tannery) related to the tekke, which served as the coordinating tabhana. It is known that the tekke on Sejhova Korija, east of the Mevlevi tekke in Sarajevo, was the summer tekke of the guilds where they held ceremonial promotions, kušanma. It is also clear that the tabak tekke was a Nakshibendi tekke of Skenđer-paša Jurišić, Sultan Fatih's army leader at his conquest of Bosnia in 1463, which, according to the citation in the waqf census conducted in Bosnia in 1540, comprised two tabhanas. From the citation in the said census it is clear that the tabhana and tekke were closely connected as two important loci for the implementation of the economic and cultural model and as coordinators of the second order in provinces, while they themselves were coordinateđ from the main center by the roving high representative/seyyah şeyh ahi baba. To such a role of zaviyes and tabhanas points the same model of their organization. It is treated also in the tanners' guild main statute, the tabak šedžera from 1067, whose complete translation is presented in Bosnian. On this tabak šedžera, Abdul-Kadir Gejlanija's sheyks based their right to overlook ali guilds in the Empire. The said šedžera points to the fact that the right was transferred to sheyks of various brotherhoods lturuk-u tarikat. Based on the citation from the 1067 šedžera on the primary role of tabak odžaks and tabhanas in the project for the spread of Islamic education, and on the basis of examples of existence of tabhanas within the mosque complexes with zaviyes/zaviyeli cami, it is understood that tabhanas in fact were schools for education and training of guilds. In this respect we can talk about educational tabhanas within complexes of the mosque-zaviye or the hanikah-tabhana-imaret-musafirhana, and manufacturing tabhanas where scholars continued work without breaking ties with the zaviye as the center from which the work of the manufacturing tabhana was coordinated.
