Мишел Фуко и западната медицина

Author(s): Dmitry Mikhel / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2020

The article analyzes Michel Foucault’s philosophical ideas on Western medicine and delves into three main insights that the French philosopher developed to expose the presence of power behind the veil of the conventional experience of medicine. These insights probe the power-disciplining function of psychiatry, the administra¬tive function of medical institutions, and the role of social medicine in the adminis¬trative and political system of Western society. Foucault arrived at these views by way of his intense interest in three elements of the medical system that arose almost simultaneously at the end of the 18th century: psychiatry as “medicine for mental illness”, the hospital as the first and most well-known type of medical institution, and social medicine as a type of medical knowledge focused more on the protection of society and far less on caring for the individual. All the issues Foucault wrote about stemmed from his personal and professional sensitivity to the problems of power and were a part of the “medical turn” in the social and human sciences that occurred in the West in the 1960s and 1970s and led to the emergence of medical humanities. The article argues that Foucault’s histories of the power of medical knowledge were philosophical histories of Western medicine. Foucault always used facts, dates, and names in an attempt to identify some of the general tendencies and patterns in the development of Western medicine and to reveal usually undisclosed mechanisms for managing individuals and populations. Those mechanisms underlie the practice of providing assistance, be it the “moral treatment” practiced by psychiatrists before the advent of effective medication, or treating patients as “clinical cases” in hospitals, or hospitalization campaigns that were considered an effective “technological safe-guard ” in the 18th and most of the 19th century.

“OUR VILLAGE WAS PROCLAIMED A TOWN”: GRANTING OF URBAN STATUS TO MAJOR SETTLEMENTS IN STARA PLANINA REGION IN THE THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19th CENTURY

Author(s): Ventsislav Muchinov / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

The article addresses an insufficiently studied issue in Bulgarian historiography – that of granting, in the third quarter of the 19th century, of an urban status to the most significant settlements from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival located in the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountain) region, such as Gabrovo, Troyan, Dryanovo, Tryavna, Elena, Kotel etc. The study elucidates the reasons behind the policy pursued by the Ottoman authorities in granting urban status and developing public works in the major settlements of the Balkan Mountain region. The article discusses the attitude of the local Bulgarian community to this policy and analyzes the role of the new urban status for the further demographic and socio-economic development of the settlements in the Stara Planina region.

THE ROLE OF SOFU MEHMED PAŞA’S COMPLEX IN THE URBANIZATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF SOFIA AS AN ADMINISTRATIVE CENTRE IN RUMELI

Author(s): Paulina Andonova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

The Ottoman sources give evidence about the role of the Black Mosque complex (nowadays the church “Sv. Sedmochislenitsi”) in the urbanization of Sofia and the establishment of the city as an important economic, political and religious centre in the Balkans. It was constructed in 1548 by the donation of the Ottoman vizier and Rumeli beylerbey Sofu Mehmed Paşa and designed by the great architect Mimar Sinan. Located on the periphery of the city, in the valley (dere), called Pınarcık, between the modern Graf Ignatiev Street (Samokovsko chaussée) and Tsarigradsko Chaussée Boulevard (the Road of the Ghazis), the complex of Sofu Mehmed Paşa was constructed on an empty site. The zâviye of the famous Halveti Şeyh Bali Efendi also emerged along the Samokovsko chaussée in the 1540s. The building of the Black Mosque külliye and the zâviye led to the settlement of Muslim population in the empty plot around the two cult centres and resulted in a new neighborhood formation called Imaret Mahalle. This study aims at tracing the stages of utilization of the extra-urban space of Sofia towards the 1540s, emphasizing the interaction between the Rumelian beylerbey and vizier and the Halveti Şeyh in the context of the religious policy of the Ottoman authorities.

THE BULGARIAN ECONOMIC ELITE IN PLOVDIV IN THE 19th CENTURY (SOCIAL AND PROPERTY PROFILE OF A PLOVDIV FAMILY)

Author(s): Maria Levkova-Muchinova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2020

The article presents the characteristics of the social and property profile of the Bulgarian economic elite in Plovdiv in the XIX century, seen throughout the history of a wealthy family – the Chalakovs. Various archival sources, documents of local self-government, personal and economic correspondence keep information about the rise of the Chalakovs and a number of other Plovdiv Bulgarian families, who have taken their place among the city’s economic and social elite, the local “notables”. The specifics of their economic activity and their property status, as important elements of their socio-professional portrait, are outlined in an article. The role of the Chalakovs and a number of other wealthy and influential Bulgarian families in the economic and social life of the city of Plovdiv in the nineteenth century is also analyzed in the study.

A Sailboat Sketch: Dating a Constructive Phase of the Old Cemetery Chapel of Pantokrator Monastery, Mount Athos

Author(s): Phaidon Hadjiantoniou / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

Raised on an older building, the mid-14th century Pantokrator monastery, founded by two brothers Byzantine aristocrats, was extended in 15th – 16th century in expenses of Romanian donors. Dedicated to St Athanasius the Athonite, the old cemetery chapel is a modestly sized two-room building located out of the monastery. Several 11th – 12th century marble constructive and decorative members are embedded in the masonry, while on the interior wall, over the entrance, a 16th century sailboat pencil sketch is dating in the same period the last important constructive phase of the narthex’ pavement.

Visual “Intertextuality”: The Use of German Prints in Transylvanian Painting in the 15th and 16th Centuries

Author(s): Ciprian Firea / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

This paper explores the visual culture of late Medieval Transylvania, and mainly the production2 of sacred images in painters’ workshops. The analysis of extant art-works demonstrates a large-scale use of pre-existing models and patterns (prints) issued by German masters, from Master E.S. to Hans Sebald Beham. Transylvania represents an artistic province where the prints of Albrecht Dürer have been widely used in painted composition in the first half of the 16th century. Such an example is the case of a small Renaissance altarpiece (dated ca. 1520) in the creation of which (it was recently noticed) the painter used at least ten different prints of Dürer and Schäufelin.

Samostan i crkva sv. Ilije u Grebenu (Krupa na Vrbasu), nekoć franjevački, a sada pravoslavni

Author(s): Velimir Blažević / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 53/2020

Ilije.

Author(s): Vidin Sukarev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2020

The study traces some cases of inaccurate and mistakenly recorded museum artefacts between the 1950s and 1970s. The main object is the Archive of the hero in the Serbian-Turkish and Russo-Turkish wars 1876–1878 Major Raycho Nikolov, but other precious exhibits accepted in the same time are also considered as analogical examples. It is unclear in the present documentation how and when these cultural valuables reached the Museum. For the first time the registration books and some other documents of the previous communist Museum of the Revolutionary Movement are used as a historical source.

Russland und die Orientalische Frage (1688–1878) Zwischen “Formal” und “Informal Power” auf dem Balkan

Author(s): Ivan Parvev / Language(s): German Issue: 3-4/2020

The chapter examines the foreign policy of Russia towards the Balkans, as seen through the prism of the “Eastern Question” between its beginning in 1688 and the Congress of Berlin (1878). The author proposes a new definition and a new periodization of the “Eastern Questions”, which should be regarded as an attempt to shad a new light on that particular scholarly field. Contrary to the common belief that Imperial Russia had some problems in using “Soft Power” as a tool of foreign policy, the author states that in the “Eastern Question” Russian rulers were quite effective in establishing “Informal Power” in the Balkans in contrast to the Austrians, who preferred to stick to traditional policy of expansion based on the principle of “uti possidetis”. The special combination between moderate territorial gains in South-East Europe and a sweeping extension of “Informal Power” is the key for explanation of Russian domination between 1774 and 1856 not only in the Balkans, but in the “Eastern Question” as well. Besides all that the Russians made use of a special kind of war against the Ottomans, named by the author as a “Consensual War”, which could also promote Russia’s “Informal Power”. The Eastern Crisis of 1875–1878, which marks the end of the chapter, is analysed as the attempt of Russia to re-gain some lost influence in the Balkans after the Treaty of Paris (1856) by the establishment of an “Informal Power” in Bulgaria. The Treaty of Berlin (1878) allowed St. Petersburg to secure its influence in the “Two Bulgarias” and to regain lands, lost after the Crimean War. However, Tsar Alexander II and his advisers were very unhappy with the final outcome of the Eastern Crisis, which was partly due to the very emotional stand in Russia towards the War of 1877–1878, where contrary to the other Russian-Ottoman wars the conflict was perceived as a war with a “Liberation Mission” to free the Bulgarians from the “yoke of the Turks”.

The Kalebends of Varna Fortress Confinement in the Second half of the 18th Century: Prisoners and Dungeons

Author(s): İsmail Altınöz / Language(s): English Issue: 3-4/2020

In this article, we will look at the Kalebend’s of Varna and provide some information on the city itself and its fortress. The etymological meaning of Kalebend will be given, and some information on its history, registers of Kalebend and documents will be also provided. Later, we will talk on the crimes that resulted in the punishment of Kalebend and its legal background. We will also deal with those who got sentenced with punishment of Kalebend, how they were transferred to the fortress where they were transferred for their sentence and how the legal procedures took place. The main sources for this research are mainly from the Presidential Ottoman Archives in Istanbul. The Registrar’s of Kalebends in this Archive are classified according to their subjects. We will examine these registrars and documents due to the fact that these are legal documents related to the topic and also crucial for the Ottoman diplomacy. The punishment of Kalebend which derives its legality from the Islamic law has its place in the Ottoman legal system. For this reason we aim to shed light on this topic with the help of archival documents and bring this topic to the attention of the academic world. The first document that I would like to talk about is on the Bulgarians exiled from Bulgaria to Diyarbekir.1 In this document which deals with Varna Kalebends, their punishments, kalebend registrars, the reason why such a punishment was given, crimes committed, the prisoners and their social status, the process of release of the prisoners helps us shed light to the legal and punishment system of the Ottoman Empire.

Една фотография от първата половина на XX век и църквата в село Яна

Author(s): Maya Zaharieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2020

The article looks at the medieval church in the village of Yana, first published in the 1950s by Nikola Mavrodinov in the book Old Bulgarian Art. The lack of information about this well known in the historiography and interesting monument intrigued me. Does such a church exist and where is it today? These questions led me to deepen my research. The text is an attempt to collect and present in full all the historical data and to clarify the location of the medieval temple. The archival materials and publications from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century contributed to determining the location of this monument, namely the village of Yana, located in Eastern Thrace, Bunarhisar region. It was renamed in the first half of the 20th century in Kaynardzha and today is located on the territory of the Republic of Turkey. Today only the base of the temple is preserved and the only evidence of the appearance of the church is the archival photograph.

SULTAN SULEJMANOVA DŽAMIJA U JAJCU OD OSNIVANJA (1528) DO DRUGOG SVJETSKOG RATA (1941)

Author(s): Elvir Duranović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 41/2020

After the conquest of Jajce in 1528, by order of the Ottoman rule, the former Church of St. Mary was converted into a mosque which was named after the then sultan, namely Sultan Suleyman’s Mosque or the Emperor’s Mosque. Without referring to the pre-Ottoman period of the construction and activities of St. Mary’s Church for which our literature accumulated considerable material, this paper will focus on the period of the foundation of the mosque in 1528 until the beginning of the Second World War. Based on the archival material and published sources, this paper tries to explain why St. Mary’s Church had been converted into a mosque and how that had been done. More significant events from the history of the mosque are highligted, and also imams, hatibs, muezzins and other mosque officials are portrayed chronologically to the present day. Special attention is focused on the history of Sultan Sulayman’s Mosque in the 19th century when a fire broke out at the mosque, and it has never been restored to the present day. Referring to the sources from the archives of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the author has pointed to the causes of the fact that the mosque was not restored after the fire.

Author(s): Fahd Kasumović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 19/2020

This paper re-examines the dominant historiographic images on the transformation processes in the Ottoman Empire from the end of the 17th century to the early 1850s. Together with critically evaluating the main developments on this topic in the Ottoman studies, it argues that the ideas presented by the acclaimed contributors in this field are insufficient to explain all of the structural changes that occurred in the Ottoman state finance, and in the economies of the frontier regions. The author argues that the historiographic idea of what should be considered under the umbrella of transformation processes needs to be re-conceptualized and adjusted to the local financial contexts of the various regions of the Ottoman Empire. When speaking of the fiscal transformation in Ottoman Bosnia, it is necessary to take into account various governmental decisions to abolish the filûrȋ tax as well as the lump-sum payments, and to substitute them with the in-kind obligation—the tithe. Based on the unpublished primary sources, this paper suggests that the mentioned phenomena should be considered a part of a wider transformation process, with different historical phases. This research focuses upon its sequences that spanned from the end of the 17th century to the early 1850s. After explaining the political reasoning that stood behind the decision to revoke the filûri tax and to substitute it with the tithe, this paper researches and explains the consequences of the mentioned financial measure, starting from the structural changes in the provincial finances to the impact it had in the wider social and economic framework.

CULTURAL HERITAGE-BASED URBAN FESTIVAL AS A TOOL TO PROMOTE LOCAL IDENTITY AND CITY MARKETING: THE CASE OF THE RADVAŇ FAIR IN BANSKÁ BYSTRICA, SLOVAKIA

Author(s): Alexandra Bitušíková / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

This paper deals with the processes of transformation of an urban festival – the Radvaň Fair in the city of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia – in a comprehensive way and from a chronological point of view. The main focus is on the development of the festival in the post-1989 (post-communist) period. The fair has been organised continuously since 1655 and went through a number of transformations. Its function has changed from a primarily commercial event of three centuries to a significant cultural and social hallmark festival in the 21st century. The key research questions concern the role of cultural heritage-based festival in identity building and city marketing, and the relationship between the festival and place (location). The paper also addresses the question of potential use/misuse of cultural heritage in current political discourse and practice.

Klejnot Kraju. Od Pedagogium do Gimnazjum Fundacji Mariackiej – ikonografia

Author(s): Ewa Gwiazdowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2020

The Gymnasium of the Marian Foundation since the beginning of its existence as a cathedral school until the 20th century was considered the most significant school in Szczecin. It operated under the patronage of the rulers of Pomerania and for a long time had a status of a higher education school, which has been mirrored in the pictorial history of the school. Its iconography dates back to the last quarter of the 16th century and was developing until 20th century. It consists mainly of the works of graphic art, often preserved as the archival photographs of the plans, survey drawings, project drawings, artistic and illustrative drawings, documentation and occasional graphics, as well as the photographs themselves. It is worth noting that in the 19th century many commemorative ceramic objects were also made. These sources differ in the level of accuracy. Materials from the modern period (16th – 18th centuries), besides the survey drawings, are less reliable. The accurate representations of the school were made in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the sources as a whole provide knowledge of the school’s form and its changes during centuries, complete the information from the written sources, and ensure a wide-ranging understanding of the topic.

Rękopisy szczecińskiego Gimnazjum Mariackiego w zbiorach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu

Rękopisy szczecińskiego Gimnazjum Mariackiego w zbiorach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Toruniu

Author(s): Andrzej Mycio / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2020

The historic collection of the University Library in Toruń in its fundamental shape was formed after the World War II, based on the so called restricted collection, i.e. primarily the books from the former German libraries. To Toruń came mainly books from Eastern Prussia and Pomerania. Substantial part of the post-German collection came from Szczecin, including the books kept until the World War II in the Library of the Marian Gymnasium, which continued the tradition of the princely Pedagogium. The Szczecin collection came to Toruń shortly after the military operations of the Wold War II came to an end, either directly from Szczecin or via Pęzino, where they were evacuated by the German administration in order to protect them from the Allied bombings. Single books of Szczecin provenience were bought by the University Library in Toruń also in the subsequent years. In the Toruń university library we house today eight manuscript codices from the Marian Gymnasium Library in Szczecin. All the manuscripts came into being in the modern period, from the late 16th century until second half of the 18th century. Seven of them represent the domains of law, medicine, and theology. Their content reflects the then state of thought and is a perfect source material for studies into the history of science. The eighth one contains the library catalogues and inventories, and is particularly precious for the researchers of history of the Szczecin Gymnasium and its Library.

Francuscy emigranci w pruskiej kolonii Wymysłów w latach 1797–1800

Francuscy emigranci w pruskiej kolonii Wymysłów w latach 1797–1800

Author(s): Anna Łysiak-Łątkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2020

Folwark Wymysłów was part of the land property Pabianice which until 1795 belonged to the Cracow cathedral chapter. As a result of the 2nd and 3rd partitions of Poland, it was seized by Prussia and included in the then established South Prussia which became a territory of the Prussian settlement action. The seized land properties were divided into farms and organized into new colonies. Wymysłów was one of such settlements, established as a result of parcelling out Folwark Wymysłów. However, it was not populated with the typical Prussian settlers. Frederick William II of Prussia in 1796 gave consent that the land divided in Wymysłów might be settled by the French emigrants who were leaving their country because of the revolution (1789–1799). It was a group of aristocrats one of whom was Stanislas Jean de Boufflers. Granting land to the members of French aristocracy served not only the Prussian policy of settlement of the seized lands, but also implemented one of the principles of the policy of the Prussian authorities towards the emigrants from France, namely separating the refugees in order to prevent them from forming larger groupings in one place. It was also the effect of the contacts established by Stanislas Jean de Boufflers with the King of Prussia. The article describes the rise of the colony Wymysłów as a result of the Prussian settlement action, the emigration policy, and the principles of establishing and running new settlements. It also discusses the questions of the French emigration as a collective and individual experience seen in the context of the revolutionary legislature.
