ŠKOLSTVO U POLITIČKOJ DJELATNOSTI POSLANIKA JUGOSLAVENSKE MUSLIMANSKE ORGANIZACIJE U NARODNOJ SKUPŠTINI KRALJEVINE SRBA, HRVATA I SLOVENACA

ŠKOLSTVO U POLITIČKOJ DJELATNOSTI POSLANIKA JUGOSLAVENSKE MUSLIMANSKE ORGANIZACIJE U NARODNOJ SKUPŠTINI KRALJEVINE SRBA, HRVATA I SLOVENACA

Author(s): Sead Selimović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2015

During the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes education in Bosnia and Herzegovina encountered numerous problems: a lack of qualified teachers, school buildings, teaching tools, the absence of children from school, attempted unification of curricula and textbooks, nationalist activities in schools and so on. The JMO deputees in the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes sought to change this situation. They were trying to increase the number of primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina so that more children could attend school. They urged for organizing analphabetic courses in order to reduce the number of illiterate persons, as well as for opening and better work of domestic schools. They pointed out a lack of textbooks, weakness in the work of inspectors and supervisors and the uneven ethnic and confessional disposition of teachers at urban and rural schools. The deputees were particularly sharp in pointing out the frequent occurrence of consecration of public schools by the Orthodox priests and asked that “education should be free of politics“. In the National Assembly of the Kingdom of SHS the most active deputees were Džafer Kulenović, Edhem Mulabdić, Fehim Kurbegović, Hamzalija Ajanović, Halid-beg Hrasnica, Hamid Kurbegović and Husein Alić. However, they were very often lonely and misunderstood in the struggle for better education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

»So leben wir in einem ewigen Zwielicht!«

»So leben wir in einem ewigen Zwielicht!«

Author(s): Stefan Simonek / Language(s): German Issue: 24/2015

This article documents letters and postcards written by the South Slav scholar and diplomat Lujo Vojnović to Hermann Bahr, which are archived in the Theater Museum in Vienna. These pieces of writing firmly prove the friendship of the two correspondents as well as fundamental differences in their political attitudes towards the question whether South Slavs belong to the Danube Monarchy or not. The letters additionally reinforce Bahr’s role as a mediator between the Habsburg center and periphery. In addition to that, another point of interest is Vojnović’s influence on Bahr during his work on the text Dalmatinische Reise.

The Varangian guard and its contribution to the manifestation of the imperial power in Byzantium

The Varangian guard and its contribution to the manifestation of the imperial power in Byzantium

Author(s): Alexandra Airinei / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

The idea that motivated the writing of this article was to treat an aspect not only of the Byzantine military history, but also of the long lasting impression that this millenary empire has left on the Northern “barbarians”, as they are often called in the Orthodox medieval sources. Its central concept is, as the title already suggests it, the imperial ideology of power, but from another perspective: the contribution of the feared Scandinavian warriors to its outlining in the Byzantine public life, as opposed to the emperor’s private existence, always hidden from the eyes of his subjects. Also, I have tried to summarise a fragment of the Norse perception on Byzantium and in what manner it influenced the former participants at the Byzantine military campaigns when they returned home. The paper has two main directions: first of all, the one that analyses the role of the Varangian guard in the life of the Basileus and their function in the display of his divine power. Secondly, the way in which the Scandinavian mercenaries perceived their military service and their proximity to the one considered imago Dei. Furthermore, this approach is preceded by a short history of the Varangian guard and its unique type of organisation inside the Byzantine army, as well as a short description of the Norse-Byzantine relations before the founding of this special unit.
