The author examines the history of studies of the fibulae of Udine-Planis type, and distinguishes series of such fibulae. The Italo-Germanic series (ca. 490—530 s.) was related to the Ostrogothic kingdom in Italy. The Balkan-Pontic series was shaped under the influence of the Ostrogothic samples; after 530-s. an important production centre developed in Bosporus. The Danube-Dnieper series (ca. 6th c.) was formed in the Lower Danube area; this and the Middle Dnieper area have evidences of local production.

Конструктивные особенности больших двупластинчатых фибул с накладками из могильника Суук-Су

The author analyzes two groups of fibulae with two plates (with decorative overlays) from the Crimea. He distinguishes two groups and two stages in the evolution of this ornament: “A” — small integral fibulae made from one casting block with forged plates; “B” — large composed fibulae consisting of riveted details (bow and plates). Group “A” is much older, dated by 550—610/620 AD. Group “B” dates to 590—650 AD and is synchronous with artefacts of late 6th - 650 AD.. The main evolution trends for fibulae are that they grow in size and change the method of manufacture.

О центрах власти у славян: днестровские клады VII века

The article treats a small group of hoards in the Dniester basin, in the territory of the Prague culture, correlated with the Sclavines of the 5th — 7th centuries. These are the findings in Krylos, Zalesye, Velykyi Kuchuriv. Apparently, they mark a center of power, corresponding to the area of dense Slavic settlement. Byzantinization of the chiefs’ elite is evidenced for the Balkan Slavs in the 7th century. The hoards in the Dniester basin also demonstrate a strong Byzantine influence on the material culture of the Slavic chiefs’ elites.

The chronology is based on dates of artefacts and data of the radiocarbon analysis.Period I (late 5th — the middle of 6th century) is marked by subjects of the late Roman time or the early migration period; it is the time when the Pskov long barrows were formed. Period II (middle 6th century — turn of 8th/9th centuries) is the time of consecutive development of this culture. It can be divided into 2 phases: IIА (second half of 6th—7th century) and IIВ (8th century). Period III (9th century — early 11th century) — the finale of this culture, marked by presence of the Old Russian artifacts.

Absolute dating of complexes with help of coins is one of the oldest theoretical problems of archaeology. A number of correction factors were proposed in order to solve the problem of life time of a coin before its archaeologisation. Behaviour of Byzantine solidi of the 5th—8th centuries A. D. in societies outside of Byzantium can be traced by European monetary hoards and Chinese tombs with exact dates. Both examples give a wide span between the date of coin age and its archaeologisation, and also demonstrate that a foreign coin is never the youngest artefact in the complex.

Exploring the European constitutional sphere. Centre – periphery perspective

The main hypothesis of this paper is that the European Constitutional Sphere can be perceived of as a battlefield in the process of globalization of law and politics, existing between the Centre and Periphery of our continent. Moreover, we are currently witnessing a spreading crisis in traditional international law, understood as a normative order pursued by nation states through conventions, agreements, etc. The process of weakening both the institution of nation states and national identities brings about, slowly but steadily, a shift of power from the national to supranational level. We are gradually experiencing the emergence of a “Cosmopolitan Law” as a brand new post-modern legal order, extending beyond traditional concepts. However, it has yet to be explained whether this idealistic “Global Constitutionalism” is currently feasible and whether we – as Europeans – are willing not only to tolerate but to truly accept “Others” within our legal and political communities?

The impact of the current economic crisis on the Chinese position in Europe

Since the beginning of the financial crisis relations between the EU and China have fundamentally changed. Beijing used to be a recipient of European aid and investments. Nowadays, China is perceived as a donor and investor, and thus the status quo has changed. Coming back to Whalley’s concept of economic power, Chinese “bargaining power in cooperative arrangements between countries” has definitely increased, and so has its retaliatory power. Beijing has a new instrument that can be used in political relations with European partners: investment promises. For the time being its importance may be limited, but it could become very valuable for China in the future.

In outlining the theoretical aspects of this topic, one should above all note the modernization phenomenon, which began to attract the attention of the world research community as early as in the 1950s–1960s, with the emergence and development of the political modernization theory. The basis of this theory was the justification of a general model of global development of human civilization. Modernization was then seen primarily as Westernization, aiming at the transition from a traditional to a modern society through scientific and technological progress, socio-structural changes, as well as transformation in state regulations and value systems. Modernization was therefore understood as the purposeful determination of a state to make qualitative changes in its society.

Hidden parallels transformation research and European studies in dialogue

Scientists often distinguish three groups of countries in the post-socialist area. The hub of the first group is Russia, the country that – as a self-contained entity – has often been a core subject of the traditional so-called ‘East European studies’. In spite of all the difficulties following the demise of the Soviet Union, the political leaders of Russia managed to maintain strong ties with a small circle of states (e.g. with Belarus or Kazakhstan). The second group is comprised of the countries of East Central Europe (that is the Baltic states, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia) which, slowly but surely, have stopped being the subject of interest of East European studies. Their membership in the EU and their political aversion to Russia has led to the situation whereby the most important coordinates of their political development are being determined in Brussels and in cooperation with the other members of the EU.

But, Europe of peoples is a region characterized by a large variety of cultures united by individualism, the Greek reason and the Jewish-Christian heritage. If the latter has been carried by the Catholic Church, the former ones have been passed by universities which were based on Greek philosophy and Roman law. Those values have emerged during the Middle-Age, thanks to the separation of Augustinian spheres that universities have successfully completed, and later, they have developed a reasoning thinking until the coming up of experimental science in the 16th century (Copernicus, 1543; Galilei, 1623).

International fragmentation of production and export-import determination in the EU member countries

Intra-Eurozone current account imbalances represent one of the most discussed topics related to the competitiveness issues of the common currency area since its establishment. Many authors examined this phenomenon considering possible linkages to effects of common monetary policy, real exchange rates movements, variety of demand drivers (fiscal imbalances included) and capital flows. However, as a result of increasing specialization on the individual country level during past few decades that stimulated distribution of individual stages of production across countries, dynamics of exports and imports of final goods, intermediate goods as well as primary inputs was associated with generally ambiguous effect on the external balance.The paper investigates the main determinants of aggregate and disaggregated export and import demand functions on the sample of 21 the European Union member countries. Our results from estimated ARDL model based on the panel data indicate relatively high role of imports in aggregate export functions while estimated aggregate functions indicated relatively high contribution of domestic demand to the dynamics of imports. Disaggregated analysis revealed significant importance of intermediate goods in the formation of external trade balances within as well as outside European Union from both territorial and commodity aspects.

So the population displacements, although they have economics as main reason, it is noteworthy that violent events suffered in their areas of origin have also been a trigger to abandon their homes. Unfortunately, this situation is not recognized by the states, which prefer to see the mobilizations as a solution to joint socio-economic difficulties for some sectors of the population. Without a national protection, victims are vulnerable to organized crime and therefore they resort to external displacement, crossing the border of irregular way, which violates them for the second time. The vulnerability will increase if they decide to start an international migration process.
