Revisiting Gender and Migration

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: migration; gender; family; women;

Yucesahin and Yazgan bring together an intriguing collection of essays drawing on a series of research carried out across the world to offer new insights on gender and migration nexus. Recent developments in the field of women’s studies have led to a renewed interest in gender studies; nevertheless, these changes are having an effect and a need, which represent different theoretical and analytical tools rather than sex as a dichotomous variable. There is an increasing concern about using theoretical approaches of gender as relational, and spatially and contextually. Therefore, gender is an increasingly important concept in different areas as an analytical tool and research lens to understand how societies function, depending on diversified theoretical orientations. Gender studies not only include women’s studies but also cover men’s and LGBTTI-Q studies.The literature on gender has highlighted several issues, specifically gender identity, gendered representations, gender roles, gender politics, femininity and masculinity. West and Zimmerman state that analysing gender involves a complex of socially guided perceptual, interactional and micro political activities that cast particular pursuits as expressions of masculine and feminine “natures”. Evidently, the role of gender in the contemporary world is at the heart of understanding migrations. From this point forth, recent developments in human mobility have heightened the need for bringing gendered approaches to all aspects of the issues of conflict and movement regarding states, societies and families from broadening perspectives to the ac-curate understanding of the whole process.

Trayectorias y jornadas: Transnacionalismo en acción

Author(s): / Language(s): Spanish

Keywords: International migration; The migration; international; analysis; identity; transnationalism;

Author(s): Emre Eren Korkmaz / Language(s): Turkish

Keywords: public space; immigrant; worker; Germany; Turkish; union;

“The main function of traditional media is to provide timely information to the public, but today, traditional media cannot fulfill these expectations with regard to the fluid nature of global migration. New digital media technologies such social media have arisen to fill the void, narrating the lives of migrants in artistic terms that bear the traces of the major social issues of migration. In this critical anthology, contributors examine the intersection of migration, art, and media studies in order to critically analyse the impact of their confluence upon migrant and receiving communities.”Vildan Mahmutoğlu is Associate Professor at Galatasaray University, Istanbul. Citizenship and Naturalization Among Turkish Skilled Migrants

Author(s): Deniz Yetkin Aker / Language(s): English

Keywords: Canada; citizenship; Deniz Yetkin Aker; Germany; naturalization; skilled migrants; Turkish;

This study focuses on three main questions: What does citizenship mean for immigrants? Why do some immigrants decide to acquire host countries’ citizenship while others do not? Do citizenship and migration policies of countries (such as Canada and Germany) are related to the decision-making process of immigrants? More specifically, the objective of the study is to investigate high-skilled and business Turkish immigrants (HSBTI) who moved to Germany and Canada between 2000 and 2010. It is expected that immigrants’ naturalization decisions and conceptualization of citizenship are related to countries’ migration and citizenship policy approaches (such as restricted or multiculturalist). With respect to high-skilled and business Turkish immigrants, this study put forwards the view that host country citizenship and migration policy (whether it is restricted or multicultural); economic, social and political benefits and costs of host country’s citizenship; and individuals’ conceptualization of citizenship (as a sense of belonging or commodity) influence their naturalization decisions.This study focuses on three main questions: What does citizenship mean for immigrants? Elite Migrants: South Asian Doctors in the UK

Author(s): Yasmin Ghazala Farooq / Language(s): English

Keywords: Elite doctors; high skilled migrants; NHS UK; South Asian diaspora; Britain; United Kingdom; migration;

This book makes a major contribution to the community cohesion literature and adds a new dimension to our understanding of community cohesion in the UK. Previous research in this area has remained overly focused on the experiences of low/semi skilled migrants. The author provides an analysis of her funded empirical research that investigated the first time the integration experiences of overseas-trained South Asian doctors in three different UK geographical locales. She reflects on their experiences from the point of migration to settlement in the UK society and describes this elite group as existing somewhere between privilege and marginalisation. The book highlights how identities are more plural than discourses of belonging often allow.

Religion, Religious Groups and Migration

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: Migration Series; Alevis; Austria; Christians; diaspora; integration; migration; religion; religious groups; Sunnis; Turks

The relationship between religion, religious groups, and migration is an important topic of recent social science debate. Migration affects all aspects of the lives of those who have left their homes, including facets characterized as religious. Religion and religious identity are linked to social, cultural, and political issues, including integration, identity negotiation, diasporic community formation, interreligious dialogue, and religious pluralism. On the one hand, migration can change religious cultures, rituals, and traditions through the experience of mobility and the response of the host country. On the other hand, religious groups can encourage migration. In this context, new forms of transnational interaction and organization have emerged that contribute to the reformulation of community and identity. In some cases, such changes can lead to new conflicts and even trigger religious radicalization. This edited book consists of essays that bring together various perspectives on religious groups and their migration processes in different geographical regions. The aim is to empirically analyze the discourse and practices of national and transnational religious groups while investigating the relationship of religion and migration to political, historical, cultural, and social transitions. The book brings together academics and practitioners from different countries through interdisciplinary approaches that will be of interest to a wide readership of scholars and practitioners.

With its diverse range of topics and expert contributors, the “Global Atlas of Refugees and Asylum Seekers” is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the complexities of global migration and the policies that shape the lives of those seeking refuge.“The authors of this book identify two main paradigms shaping states’ narratives regarding asylum seekers and refugees. Along the horizontal axis, discourses range from national security to humanitarian aid. On the vertical axis, they extend from the pursuit of ideals, as traditionally defined for refugees and asylum seekers, to personal survival due to economic, climate-related crises, family violence, gender violence, or organized crime. This shift, as highlighted in the chapter on Germany by Professor Knerr, is altering the original vision of agreements that stemmed from post-World War II Europe.Finally, the rise of populist and authoritarian states in Latin America, which cannot be solely explained by repressive authoritarianism but rather create conditions of difficult survival for their nationals, is exerting additional pressures. Additionally, religiously motivated civil wars, such as those in Afghanistan, Iran, and Syria, pose complex challenges. Should countries reconsider the principles on which they are acting?Less obvious is the role of migration and refugee policies in influencing asylum seekers’ choice of their future destination. Many authors mention support networks and family ties as factors influencing refugees and asylum seekers’ decisions to leave their countries and select their destination. However, it remains unclear whether these networks operate in the same capacity as support networks for irregular migrants. Many chapters raise issues that have received little attention, primarily because of the focus on refugees and asylum seekers as agents. These issues include the reasons prompting the decision to leave one’s country of origin, who must leave, the influence of family or social support networks on this decision, their role in selecting possible settlement locations, and the role of civil society organizations in supporting and guiding these decisions. This is especially crucial considering that unaccompanied children represent 30-35% of asylum applicants. The chapters in this Global Atlas provide an overview of refugee and asylum regimes to enhance understanding and better plan for the ongoing and future challenges of human mobility.”

The migrations from Mexico and Central America and the challenge of public policies and international cooperation in the 21st century.

Author(s): Rodolfo García Zamora,Selene Gaspar Olvera / Language(s): Spanish

Keywords: migration; Mexico; economic development; civil society;

In the year 2024, presidential elections in the United States and Mexico coincide, with migration emerging as a central issue. While in the United States, proposals for stricter border control, refusal to regularize 12 million undocumented migrants, dismantling of the asylum system, and mass deportations are being debated, Mexico continues to exclude migrants from its national agenda. Over the past four decades, migrants in Mexico and the region have been marginalized, with migration policies primarily focused on containment and deportation.This book delves into the asymmetry between the importance of migration in Mexico, Central America, and the Southern Cone, and the lack of institutional foresight in Mexico to address comprehensive migration policies. It examines the economic, social, political, and migratory impacts of the past five years, revealing how these dynamics shape regional and global migration corridors. From the challenges of economic and social crises exacerbated by COVID-19 to the emergence of transnational migration movements such as caravans, this text explores the complex realities and urgent need for transformative policies. Drawing on decades of research, the authors provide insights into the intersections of migration, economic development, and human rights, advocating for collective engagement with inclusive policies that prioritize employment, income, human security, and sustainability.Faced with unprecedented migration pressures in the region, this book serves as a call to action for policymakers, academics, and civil society to rethink migration governance and address the root causes driving global migration flows. With detailed analysis and forward-looking recommendations, it provides a roadmap for building a more equitable and humane approach to migration in Mexico and beyond.
