Note on snake ritual in Saruq al-Hadid

Author(s): Iwona Zych / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Southeastern Arabia; copper serpent; ritual offering; Iron Age II; Saruq al-Hadid

An apparent Iron Age II ritual offering deposit, comprising amongothers a triad of copper snake figurines, discovered in the Polish sectorof the excavation at the site of Saruq al-Hadid (Emirate of Dubai,UAE), is considered in light of a growing body of archaeologicalevidence for ophiolatry from southeastern Arabia. In this preliminarynote attention is drawn to parallels from the Levant, tapping intoa long-lasting tradition from the Late Bronze Age and early IronAge, suggestive of long-distance contacts between the two regions.Remarks on the interpretation of the ritual draw upon ethnographicalstudies of modern snake veneration in South India.

Heterodox Economic Cycles Theory

Heterodox Economic Cycles Theory

Heterodox Economic Cycles Theory

Author(s): Julia M. Puaschunder / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Affect; Collective moods; Communication; Consumption;

Overall the following article innovatively paints a novel picture of the mass psychological underpinnings of business cycles based on information flows in order to recommend how certain communication strategies could counterweight and alleviate the building of disastrous financial market mass movements. Acknowledging that human beings are connected to and interact with each other in families, ties and larger networks of states, nations and intergovernmental institutions, studying the role of information in building socially-constructed economic correlates promises to explain how market outcomes are developed in the social compound and can be guided by media communication. Addressing problems of the neoclassical assumption of perfect information markets through the lens of ‘real competition,’ the following paper will specifically unravel how contemporary media communication produces certain types of price expectations that form consumption patterns leading to collectively-shared economic outcomes. An introduction to the history of economic cycles will lead to the analysis of the role of information in creating economic booms and busts in the age of globalization. Applying emergent risk theory onto economic fluctuations will serve as an innovative way to explain how and what information represented in the media creates economic ups and downs. Linguistic roots of news about the economy are aimed at shedding light on how media representations and temporal foci echo in economic correlates and shape market outcomes. As business cycles are a collective phenomenon, group interactions’ potential contribution to create business cycles will innovatively be outlined and the role of information flows among groups in creating price expectations unraveled. Business cycles will also be shown to obey some kind of natural complexity, as for being whimsically influenced by socio-historic and political trends. Recommendations how to create more stable economic systems by avoiding emergent risks and communicating market prospects more cautiously will be given in the discussion followed by a prospective future research outlook and conclusion.

Forest Rights Struggles after FRA 2006: The Case of Dalhi Land in Raigad District, Maharashtra

Author(s): Paul Sylvester Fernandes,R Rekha Mammen,Geetanjoy Sahu / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Forest rights; Forest Rights Act; Dalhi land; Katkari community; indigenous community

Maharashtra is considered one of the leading states in India with regard to the implementation of the landmark Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006. Yet the struggles in the Raigad district of the Katkari tribe, formally categorized by the government as a ‘Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group’, depicts the continuing difficulties in addressing structural marginalization. The FRA, 2006 legislated recognition of community and individual forest rights as an effective tool to undo the historical injustice inflicted by the colonial and post-colonial state. This study looks at the characterization of rights by the tribal community and forest governance institutions and the nature of contestations regarding indigenous forest rights. The discussion focuses on the land used by the Katkari tribe for dalhi cropping. Using both primary and secondary data sources, forest rights claims are analysed with respect to the history of the Katkari community in the region, their relationship with the forest, and the larger development practice context. The study also attempts to understand the implications of positions taken at multiple levels for indigenous people’s resource rights and the sustainability of livelihoods based on these resources.

Green New Deal Leadership Determinants of the 21st Century: Teaching Economics of the Environment

Author(s): Julia M. Puaschunder / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Climate Bonds; Climate Change; Climate Justice; Climatorial Imperative; Economics of the Environment; Ethics

The future leadership on the Green New Deal (GND) will depend on teaching coreconcepts of the economics of the environment and evaluating the success of the transitionimplementation by monitoring and evaluation. The GND operates within the framework of the UnitedNations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 2008 to create jobs in green industries, thus boostingthe world economy and curbing climate change at the same time. In 2019 over 600 organizationssubmitted a letter to the U.S. Congress declaring support for policies to reduce greenhouse gasemissions. This includes ending fossil fuel extraction and subsidies, transitioning to 100% cleanrenewable energy by 2035, expanding public transportation, and strict emission reductions rather thanreliance on carbon emission trading. This paper describes the implementation of the GND but alsounderlying efforts to teach GND components for building a cadre of future environmental economists.

Ghana’s Public Diplomacy under Kwame Nkrumah

Ghana’s Public Diplomacy under Kwame Nkrumah

Author(s): Isaac Antwi-Boasiako / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: public diplomacy; communication; Kwame Nkrumah; pan-Africanism; foreign policy

The concept of public diplomacy is one of the trending approaches in modern international relations and diplomacy. Communicating and engaging effectively with the foreign public in a particular nation by a government to achieve its foreign policy objective is every government’s goal. The field of public diplomacy as an academic discipline in Ghana in particular and Africa has not received much attention compared to the Western World. This article attempts to bridge this gap by opening Ghana’s public diplomacy to academic scrutiny that has, as yet, been underdeveloped. This paper’s principal objective is to bring to light the public diplomacy instruments used by the indefatigable first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to propagate his pan-Africanism foreign policy in the 1960s against capitalism and communism after Ghana’s independence. It also looks briefly at Nkrumah’s general foreign policy agenda through the lens of public diplomacy. Methodologically, it uses content analysis of documents to explore how Nkrumah adopted the public diplomacy tactics during his presidency to sell his foreign policy. The article explores the topic under the theoretical framework of Golan’s Integrated Public Diplomacy model. It concludes that public diplomacy under Kwame Nkrumah should be the foundation and ignite its incorporation into Ghana’s tertiary education and current foreign policy strategies.

The Repressive Actions of the Communist System against the Romanian Neoprotestant Catechization System

Author(s): Ciprian Corneliu Ciurea / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: church; neo-Protestant; religious education; communism; repressive actions

At a time when truth had become relative and politics had become only a game of dictatorial power, the church, left without any support, had to endure multiple constraints, leading an atypical, tacit and crisis "normality" to resist. In a society where comrade Elena Ceaușescu claimed to be the "mother of the people", the neo-Protestant cults had to endure repressive measures just because they had educated their children and young people in a Christian spirit.

Aggrievement and Identity During a Pandemic Due to Conflicts, Policy Decisions and the Media

Author(s): William L. Rosenberg / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: aggrievement; identity; political information systems;

The purpose of this article is to bring together the diverse literatures related to the issues of aggrievement and politics, showing how the pandemic exacerbated the problem. The effect is due to limitations of social interaction, shrunken social networks, and selective exposure to news. Fukuyama’s (2018) work on conflict and aggrievement suggests that these concepts may be tied to a sense of one’s identity. Aggrievement can form along multiple dimensions tied to racial, gender, religious and other group identities. A sense of nationalism may contribute to aggrievement. The threats posed to identity are found around the world. People find involvement in Identity politics gratifying, but also makes them more alienated and resentful. A number of potential solutions are explored such as broader information networks and media literacy efforts.

Thinking Climate Crisis with The Covid-19 Pandemic: Reflecting on Climate News in Turkey

Covid-19 Salginini İklim Krizi ile Birlikte Düşünmek: Türkiye’de İklim Haberleri Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

Author(s): Aslıhan Ardıç Çobaner / Language(s): Turkish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Covid-19 pandemic; climate crisis; news; climate reporting; content analysis;

This study proposes to look at the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world, from a broader perspective as part of the climate crisis. There are many common points between the Covid-19 pandemic as a global crisis and the climate crisis (just like the SARS and Ebola diseases). The pandemic, which is thought to be caused by a live animal market in Wuhan, China, has become global in a short time, news about quarantine decisions, curfews and slowdown in production and industry let air pollution reduce and revitalization of natural life and the beginning of the appearance of wild animals in nature. have exposedthe ecological dimension of pandemic and the climate crisis. However, the Covid-19 outbreak and climate crisis affect the disadvantaged segments of the society more and deepen the existing inequalities. Likewise, disinformation is widespread due to the prevalence of conspiracy theories and denial policies in both areas. In addition, the solution of both requires changes in current socio-economic policies and priorities. This study intends to present an overview of the state of climate news, which can not be found places in the agenda of Turkey in "normal" times, in the Covid-19 pandemic period. For this purpose, content analysis was performed on the news in Google News search for a period of one year, including the dates of the Covid-19 outbreak. The news has been critically examined over whether it is linked to the Covid-19 outbreak, taking into account the principles of climate journalism.

Forced migrant’s sense of place: the case of Syrian refugee-workers in Istanbul, Turkey

Author(s): Basem Mahmud / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Migrants sense of place; migrant; Syrian refugee; refugee workers; Istanbul; Turkey;

The issue of the integration of migrants has long been at the heart of public debates taking place in the societies of the Global North. Many of the refugees who move to these societies start their journey by first entering (often illegally) a neighboring country in the Global South, after which they tend to move to another country with better conditions. A good example is the case of those refugees who go to Indonesia and then to Australia or those who go to Turkey or Libya to arrive at a European country. This leads to more negotiations and collaborations among the states of the Global North and Global South. However, in these negotiations, the voices and lives of refugees are not considered; in the best cases, their rights and interests are acknowledged only “nominally”. This is because Global North states seek to stop the flow at any cost.

Work lives of skilled female immigrants in the United States

Author(s): Harika Suklun / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Work lives; skilled female immigrants; United States; Immigration; Batalova; Blizzard; phenomena; globalization; international; immigration; market for skilled ; workers; global; markets;

Immigration has become central in the public conversation especially in the United States. The most common topics are political controversy, struggling statistics, and the perceptions of the noteworthy interval to changing realities (Batalova, Blizzard, & Bolter, 2020). With the phenomena of globalization, international immigration keeps growing around the world. The market for skilled workers is becoming increasingly global, and in parallel to that, the new knowledge and ideas are becoming increasingly global in markets. Adserà and Pytliková (2015, p. 79) conclude that people in countries with a higher level of education migrate more than in other countries which might be the reason for the increased need for highly skilled migrants globally. Although skilled immigrants in the United States represent a smaller proportion of the workforce, in countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, immigrants have a vital role in advancing innovation and economic growth and providing domestic labor supply (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2015). Some countries are receiving more immigrants than others, and the top immigrant-receiving countries are the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia. According to Gonzalez-Barrera and Connor (2019, p. 4), the United States held 18 percent of the total number of immigrants in the world in 2017. In 2019 there were 13,590,000 Lawful Permanent Residents (also called Green Card holders) and, of the total number, 7,070,000 were females in the USA (Baker, 2020, p. 6).

Sensory Marketing in Bulgaria

Сензорен маркетинг в България

Author(s): Valentina Makni,Monika Georgieva / Language(s): Bulgarian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Sensory Marketing; Multisensory Experience; Sensory Stimuli; Consumer Behaviour; Bulgaria

The subject of this study is sensory marketing in Bulgaria and multisensory experience in the buying process in different retailers and services. Our goal is to assess the customers’ sensory perceptions in the purchasing process and their importance for the consumer behaviour. Through descriptive analysis we prove the significance of all senses in the buying process, hence the affirmation of multisensory impact strategy on human senses. Through principal components analysis (PCA) we explain the relationship among the five variables (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) by reducing them to a smaller number of factors. The obtained results provide guidelines for the search for marketing approaches by companies for а complex engagement of sensory stimuli in order to increase consumer value.

Gamification in Business Logistics Training

Author(s): Maria Vodenicharova / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Gamification; Training; Business Logistics; Supply Chains

Developing multifaceted contemporary individuals implies that they have to be constructed as one whole system, as well as provide for their creative realization. In order to improve the training of university students, innovative models for conducting lectures and seminars should be implemented. The change in curricula should meet the social requirements of the modern world and technologies used by students. Implementing gamification in the business logistics training should aim at studying and establishing logistics knowledge and skills activities and processes. The games included in the curriculum should take into consideration the changes and not only identify the state and progress students make and to provide opportunities for making business decisions, they should be motivating and correcting, generating ideas and alternatives. Gamification is the application of game-design elements in various systems which can be used in education. Within the education framework this can involve a number of game mechanisms. The possibilities to use these game-design mechanisms to facilitate training have become the object of increasingly more research and are ever so often included in practice. The report will focus on identifying how these game mechanisms can improve knowledge in business logistics and along with that strengthen efficiency and the provision of new opportunities for instructors.

In 2011, when the Syrian crisis began, many families gradually left Syria to seek asylum in neighboring countries. Palestinian refugees in Syria were gradually been caught up in the conflict and some of them were forced into exile. While most neighboring countries closed their borders very rapidly to this group of refugees, Lebanon adopted a more flexible approach (Doraï & Al Husseini, 2013). More than 50,000 Syrian Palestinians have found asylum in Lebanon. The geography of this exile is singular. Lebanon is one of the countries in the region where the legal status of Palestinians is most precarious. More than half of the Palestinians in Lebanon still live in one of 12 refugee camps, where socio-economic conditions are very difficult. This polarization of Palestinian migration from Syria to these areas may, however, be explained by the historical ties between Palestinian refugees in both countries (Doraï, 2015). Forced migration related to the current conflict in Syria is based on forms of mobility developed since the 1948 exodus (Nakbain Arabic).

At the level of European leadership in Brussels, it has been developed, based on preserving and affirming the European culture and civilisation, the idea of creating the conceptual and actional premises for “Europe ad integrum” to represent a “maritime force”. In this context, the Integrated Maritime Policy is a comprehensive approach to all European Union maritime and related policies. Basically, the Integrated Maritime Policy is the European Union’s response to develop the sustainable implementation of maritime governance, a concept in which maritime security plays a key role.This paper deals with the principles of maritime policies formulated at European Union level,which, in conjunction with the provisions of the European Union Maritime Security Strategy and Action Plan, form the European concept of maritime governance and security.

Keywords: diplomacy; public diplomacy; digital diplomacy; international security; national security;

In this study, we start from the premise that the isolation imposed after the declaration of the pandemic with Covid-19 forced the diplomatic environment to assume its digitization,following a time when the digital diplomacy held a secondary role on Social Media on the Internet. The pandemic has forced the diplomatic and consular environment to accept their full digitization, almost overnight. It has quickly become a powerful tool for innovation and progress, a reliable element of international cooperation. Then, during the research, wehighlight aspects that explain the removal of digital diplomacy from the sphere of public diplomacy. We explain the central mission of contemporary diplomacy with the help of good practices and international cooperation in the field of regional security in the Black Sea region. Then we underline the reasons that could weaken national security. We also set out essential elements that lead us to believe that the digital diplomacy will remain relevant after the end of the pandemic, becoming an important element of interconnection of all stakeholders and apacifist protector of national security.

The isolation imposed by the pandemic has produced the “rediscovery” of Internet utilities, the only window to the real world. The first areas that took over were the most connected to the sciences of communication. The media has retreated, quickly adapting to traditional functions. (Tele)Communications and the media, the internet and social networks have become reference media in recent years, environments that cause problems at all levels, from the individual to the most relevant to the international and where very few can keep pace with these evolutions. When we say that there are few who keep up, we turn our attention to the effects of change on the national security sectors. However, the laws and systems of protection of events, dangers and risks are far from implementing the general module, and the existing ones are outdated due to the complex vortex of changes and evolution of technologies that people have entered, where there are no borders, national laws or simple rules. of conduct, universally accepted, given that in the virtual space, the state is almost non-existent.
