Cultural diversity and linguistic variation in the phraseology of residential dwellings

Cultural diversity and linguistic variation in the phraseology of residential dwellings

Author(s): Luminiţa Drugă,Nadia-Nicoleta Morăraşu / Language(s): English / Issue: 09/2011

Keywords: cultural diversity; linguistic variation; phraseology; phraseological unit; residential dwelling

This study proposes a systematization of the phraseology of residential dwellings in a trilingual investigation of a whole series of culturally-specific phraseological units: idiomatic expressions, compound words, fixed combinations/collocations, clichés, proverbs and sayings etc. The linguistic and cultural analyses emphasize the existence of some mental images and conceptualizations of dwelling-houses, shared by and “conventionalized in the speech community” (Ellis 2008:2), with a proven discursive and stylistic potential and an impressive linguistic variety.

Stronger than Upheavals

Stronger than Upheavals

Author(s): Dana Sala / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

Keywords: letters; torture; secret crimes of Communism; sacrifice; premonition of death; mother-daughter relationship; testimony of life between 1947-1951 in Romania.

Ecaterina Bălăcioiu-Lovinescu was the perfect embodiment of what Julia Kristeva calls “the female genius”. In the absence of her daughter, Monica, mother Ecaterina goes through all stages of despair. There is only one thing she could do, however, which is to write to her daughter every day and thus keep her close to her heart. Mother has nothing to oppose to the intensifying terror of Stalinist abuses but the power of love. There is no force in the world that can prevent her from striving for a psychical un-separation from her daughter. The letters are the result of this attempt. These letters have a powerful effect of catharsis, they are the carrier of a guiltless guilty charge. The editor of the book, Astrid Cambose, follows closely the relationship between premonitory deeds and their expression.

The Semantics of the Romanian Verb A MÂNCA (TO EAT)

The Semantics of the Romanian Verb A MÂNCA (TO EAT)

Semantica verbului a mânca în limba română

Author(s): Monica Bilauca / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2017

Keywords: phraseology; Romance languages; universals of thought; nutrition.

In an attempt to investigate a series of phraseological structures concerning alimentation, we will describe the Romanian mentality on nutrition and we will comment on the implications of the metaphorical use of such structures in relation to the general knowledge about humankind. The phrasemes in our corpus were selected from phraseological dictionaries and from Iuliu Zanne’s Proverbele românilor. Although it is common knowledge that phraseology represents the untranslatable side of any language, we will focus on identifying common patterns of representation and on providing our own gloss on the divergent mentality within the Neo-Latin culture, along with the cultural or linguistic stock that generated the phrasemes.

Ironic connotation of some specialized field neologisms used in oral verbal interaction in Romanian

Ironic connotation of some specialized field neologisms used in oral verbal interaction in Romanian

Connotación irónica de algunos neologismos del ámbito especializado utilizados en la interacción verbal oral en rumano

Author(s): Cătălina-Iuliana PÎNZARIU / Language(s): Spanish / Issue: 29/2020

Keywords: argot; étymologie multiple; ironie; métaphore; néologisme;

The Id of Idiosyncratic Idioms in Individual Romance and Germanic Languages vs the Superego of Universal Languaculture

Author(s): Gina Măciucă / Language(s): English / Issue: 12/2019

Keywords: idiom; ear; sensory/cognitive perception; languaculture; contrastive phraseology; Romance vs Germanic;

Inspired by the semantically equivalent series E talk one’s head/armoff – G sich ein Loch in den Bauch [= belly] reden – S hablar por los codos [=elbows] – R a i se duce gura [=mouth] la urechi [=ears; peripheralconstituent] – I fare una testa [= head] di qualcuno cosi, the approach at handis intended to complement the prevailingly language-based one and take theanalysis to the more complex, languacultural level, with the aim of bringingidiosyncratic patterns of forma mentis in individual languacultures to bear onsemantic selection of core constituents in interlingually synonymous idioms,and, while allowing for such factors as sheer frequency, contextual pragmaticclues, salient cultural practices or perceived gaps, also attempt to explore andaccount for similarities and contrasts both intra-languaculturally (i.e. withinlanguage families) and inter-languaculturally (i.e. across language families).The major focus of the present contribution – which merely broaches the topicat issue in this first research phase – is on ear and its interlingual synonyms asfeatured by idioms of English, German, Italian, Romanian and Spanishextraction.

Keywords: documents;letters;diachronic;language;Romanians;

Our analysis is based on a corpus of documents related to the history of the Romanians, namely papers and private letters from the Bistriţa cities Archives, published by Nicolae Iorga and Alexandru Rosetti; our comments aim to set up a representative image of the language used during that period; that goal is to be accomplished by outlining the specific features of the language, by explicit or implicit comparisons with the previous stages of the language.

THE LEXICAL MEANING OF THE WORDS REFERRING TO ETERNITY (DERIVATIVES OF THE WORD VEAC): AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE

Author(s): Monica Timofte / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2021

Keywords: lexical meaning; ecclesiastical language; biblical language; DLR; variable semantics; semantic features;

Subjective Syntactic Structures: A Case Study

Author(s): Monica Timofte / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2021

Keywords: The Royal Cookbook; syntactic subjectivity; text-unit; metatext; syntactic modus; syntactic dictum

The volume Carte regală de bucate (The Royal Cookbook) is the object of our investigation from a syntactic-pragmatic perspective. The inventory of recipes highlighted the structural patterns of the incident metatext as a language unit. The focal interest of this paper is to inventory the forms of encoding syntactic subjectivity. The analysis of the language facts led to the confirmation of the updated Romanian linguistic theory referring to the text as a syntactic-pragmatic unit and to the syntactic modus, and occasioned necessary dissociations between the different language levels at which the phenomenon of modality appears.

The Implications of the Covid 19 Pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War for Family Dynamics

Author(s): Elena Monica Mihalcea,Lavinia Elisabeta Popp / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Covid 19 pandemic; military conflict in Ukraine; family dynamics; financial destabilization; routine change;

The Covid 19 Pandemic and the military conflict in Ukraine have taken their toll on the family dynamics in Romania in terms of child care, risk of illness and last, but not least, of financial destabilization. The challenges of this stressful period, unanimously admitted, have been the subject of the practitioners in the field of social work, reference actors in this context. The survey provides the outcome of a qualitative research using as an enquiry method a semistructured interview which was carried out by means of sixteen families (twenty- seven parents) in Valcea county, in the South of Romania. The aim of the current research is to highlight the effect that the two recent events has had on the families with school age children taking into account that all the areas of activities and their habits have suffered some changes. The main results of the ongoing survey emphasize the solid complaints expressed by parents in what regards the online school and their worries concerning the financial destabilization whereas their health problems and physical integrity didn't seem to be as important to them.
