Some observations concerning the discursive manifestations of the religious utterance in the public discourse and in the contemporary journalistic text

Some observations concerning the discursive manifestations of the religious utterance in the public discourse and in the contemporary journalistic text

Quelques observations concernant les manifestations discursives de l’énoncé religieux dans le discours public et dans le texte journalistique contemporain

Author(s): Monica Bilauca / Language(s): French / Issue: 06/2008

We can notice nowadays an important come-back in the public oral discourse and in the journalistic written text of statements meant to re-establish the status of the Church by the propagation of the Christian message. Thus, in his search for a renewed, refreshed language, the journalist strives to give up clichés and automatisms, in favour of more seducing formulas. Our analysis follows the strategy of reintegrating stylistically expressive phrases in Academia Caţavencu journal, procedure which must be associated with the encyclopaedic competence, the interlocutors’ cultural and educational qualification.

Bona mors or bona mortis? Description of the death of St Monica in St Augustine's "Confessions" compared to the good results of death in "De bono mortis" by St Ambrose

Bona mors or bona mortis? Description of the death of St Monica in St Augustine's "Confessions" compared to the good results of death in "De bono mortis" by St Ambrose

Bona mors czy bona mortis? Opis śmierci św. Moniki w Wyznaniach św. Augustyna a dobra płynące ze śmierci w De bono mortis św. Ambrożego

Author(s): Grzegorz Pakowski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Death; salvation; Augustine; Ambrose; Monica

St Monica, the mother of St Augustine, was also a listener to St Ambrose's homilies. The Bishop of Milan also had a significant influence on her son's thought. Both St Augustine and Ambrose spoke on the subject of death, but used different literary forms - Augustine's Confessions are autobiographical, Ambrose is the author of the moral-theological booklet De bono mortis. The aim of this article is to answer the question to what extent the description of St Monica's death in the Confessions by St Augustine is a literary realisation of the philosophical and theological postulates related to bona mors (good death) formulated by St Ambrose in De bono mortis. The article consists of four parts. The first outlines the approach to the theme of death in Christian antiquity; the second discusses the basic elements of St Ambrose's concept as presented in De bono mortis; the third part juxtaposes the above concept with excerpts from St Augustine's Confessions; and the fourth part concludes and attempts to answer the research question posed.

The Kafkaesque woman and her monstrous double in the Andean Gothic: Analysis of the short story “Las Voladoras” by Mónica Ojeda

The Kafkaesque woman and her monstrous double in the Andean Gothic: Analysis of the short story “Las Voladoras” by Mónica Ojeda

La mujer kafkiana y su doble monstruoso en el gótico andino: Análisis del cuento “Las Voladoras”, de Mónica Ojeda

Author(s): Leira Araújo-Nieto / Language(s): Spanish / Issue: Special/2023

Keywords: Franz Kafka; Andean Gothic; monster; Ecuador

Mónica Ojeda (Guayaquil, 1988) is an Ecuadorian writer whose literature is linked to the horror in its multiple forms. Furthermore, Las Voladoras (2020), included Ojeda in a new literary genre called Andean Gothic, a category where horror and Latin American myths convey. This paper analyzes how Ojeda adapts the disposition of the narrative elements to the Andean folklore. Moreover, it studies Ojeda’s reconstruction of the female monster by introducing the figure of a woman and its double, a hybrid between witch and animal, in order to create an alter ego effect. This article addresses how this narrative maneuver links Ojeda to Franz Kafka (1883–1924) and his vision of the monster in society.

Author(s): Luigi Tassoni / Language(s): Italian / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: book review; Monica Fekete;

Keywords: MONICA ANTONELLO; review;

In an increasingly globalized economy and cosmopolitan society, teaching and training tomorrow’s specialists brings new challenges for the (foreign) language teachers. ESP (English for Specialized Purposes) tutors in particular need to pay attention to the way they prepare their students and improve upon their foreign language skills, so that young graduates can easily find insertion in the labor market. In some specific domains, such as Tourism, where interaction with both natives and foreign speakers of English can be a regular if not daily occurrence, mastering an average level of English and demonstrating some degree of intercultural communication competency may no longer be enough.

”MAKING THINGS MORE OR LESS FUZZY WITH WORDS?” - HEDGING IN MEDICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES: NATIVE VS NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH, BY MONICA MIHAELA MARTA

Author(s): Anișoara Pop / Language(s): English / Issue: 6/2024

Keywords: hedging; medical research articles; native speakers; non-native speakers;Monica Mihaela Marta.

In this review we focus our attention on Monica Mihaela Marta's1 book. The book of the author, entitled Hedging in Medical Research Articles: Native vs Non-Native Speakers of English (2019) investigates, with remarkable accuracy, the mechanisms of hedging and the different ways of defining it. Hedging is, after all, a complex phenomenon whose fields of reference are lexicology, pragmatics and semantics. Lately, this phenomenon has been intensively studied and discussed and, with this review, we aim to explore this current mechanism. In literary sphere, hedging provides language with that euphemistic, polite valence, contributing to the fluidity of the communication process. This review has therefore aimed to explore some of the hypostases and facets of hedging, with focus upon hedging in medical research articles.

ÎN CONTRATIMP – O PROZĂ DE TINEREȚE A MONICĂI LOVINESCU

Author(s): Georgeta Orian / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2024

Keywords: Monica Lovinescu; interwar Romanian literature; autobiographical fiction

This article proposes a close reading approach to the most consistent of the early fiction of the writer Monica Lovinescu (1923-2008). Known more as a militant exponent of the Romanian exile after World War II, Monica Lovinescu is the author of an impressive memoir, but her literary work from her formative years is more often known by specialists than by the general public. The reading of the short novel În contratimp (1945) in the context of the times is also based on her own confessions about her passion for theatre and the artistic environment she attended in the final period of her university studies, when the text was written. The correlation of her biographical details with the profile of one of the novel's characters allows us to formulate the conclusion of an autobiographical text.

The Language of Saint Monica and the Experience of Unspeakable Words. Ἐνθουσιασμός and Her Words “With Much Power”

Author(s): Liviu Petcu,Emanuela-Maria Petcu / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2024

Keywords: language; Saint Monica; experience; unspeakable words; power; enthusiasm;

In this article, we would like to highlight the fact that the words “with much power” of Saint Monica, the mother of Blessed Augustine, won the soul of her son and directed him towards moral beauty, writing the words of eternal life in his heart. And Augustine, as soon as he received the power of the Word, rose and came close to the light of divinity. The power of the word is extraordinary. Every word has power, because it belongs to someone, because through the word one’s desire and will are expressed. And the desire, the will, the calling of that one moves the one to whom it is directed. Man persuades man. Man gives power to man, primarily through the word. Biblical and liturgical language is, above all, something living: it moves the heart, it does not satisfy the mind. Of course, it depends on each person (on his openness and capacity) how much he shares and uses these words. God, through the energy of the word, tries to contact man. Man, through the word of prayer, tries to respond to God. Man shows his freedom and free choice when he responds to God through prayer, when he can say “Amen” to God, to God’s call. The words of mother Monica to her son, Augustine, were words spoken with great power and enthusiasm. The very word ἐνθουσιασμός in Greek means the one over whom a Divinity hovers.
