This paper is dedicated to the economic aspects of the competitiveness in the Bulgarian economy. The research employs TOWS Matrix Analysis as a methodology to analyze the advantages and the challenges to the Bulgarian economy. It reviews country’s performance according to the Global Competitiveness Index. The author reviews the competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy considering the following circumstances – dissatisfactory competitiveness performance according to international indexes and comparative studies; Bulgarian commitments to the EU towards improvement of the competitiveness on a national level; implications of the global financial and economic crisis on the Bulgarian economy.

The first decade of the 21st century was accompanied by increased price volatility and price spikes in commodity markets. This caused a chain reaction in the world economy. The changes that took place had not only an economic but also a social dimension. Price volatility is expressed through the transfer of uncertainty from the financial sector to other sectors of the global economy. At the time of the collapse of the capital markets, commodities recorded record turnovers. New financial instruments have appeared to allow the avalanche-like increase in the positions of institutional speculators in commodity markets. In the short term, increased uncertainty is crucial for the price stability of the food. For example, through its impact mechanisms, climate change may cause another 115 million people worldwide to face chronic hunger and reach a total of more than 700 million people. For our country, the volatility of grain prices is of strategic importance.

The development of entrepreneurship nowadays is of great importance for the competitiveness of any economy, and that is why it is important the start-up businesses and their innovation activities to be well stimulated. The purpose of the report is to analyze the possibilities for financing the implementation of innovations by Start-ups in Bulgaria through European funds and the efficiency of absorption of funds. The basis is a comparative feature of funding procedures over the programming period 2007-2013 and 2014-2020. The used information is mainly from Information System for Management and Monitoring of EU Funds in Bulgaria The results show that less and less Start-ups are benefiting from European funding for innovations

Abstract Within the domain the economic tourist resources are projects of industrial heritage; active industrial and agricultural places, open for visits and presentations; scientific centers making popular new achievements, research and innovative actions. There has been a keen interest towards these resources in the last years. The tourists interested in them achieve knowledge, opportunities, experience and entertainment, and the economic establishments (together with the towns and regions they are situated in) impose image and brand, strengthening their reputation. The benefits are more than significant and are a prerequisite for stimulating the development of these resources and their connecting with strategic plans for a Sustainable Development of the Destination.

The paper presents the construct of cultural intelligence as a new field in crosscultural studies. It considers the dimensions of the concept directly related to global business and its effectiveness, as well as international assignments (expatriates). In accordance with the first presented scale for its individual measurement in literature, meta-cognitive, cognitive, motivational and behavioral dimensions are explained. Consequently, fundamental scales for its measurement on different levels, besides individual, are briefly stated - those to be organizational and business quotient. Finally, their main advantages and benefits, as well as some comments are pointed out in the paper.

The present report reviews issues, related to the compensation of employees and the workers’ remittances of emigrants. Data based on information from international institutions and from the Bulgarian National Bank, regarding the relative shares of the said pair of items in GDP, is provided. On the basis of information from an empirical sociological study, carried out in 2017 within the framework of the project entitled: “Returning Migrants: Segmentation and Stratification of Economic Mobility” (financed by the Scientific Research Fund of Bulgaria under contract No. DN 05/6 dated 14/12/2016) the profile of individuals supporting their relatives, who remained in home country, is outlined. An answer is sought to the question of what drives the active remittance behaviour of the returning migrants during their stay abroad. Indication is provided of the purposes, for which the remittances are used and the types of businesses they generate.

This article discusses the competitiveness beyond its economic nature, infl uenced by the concept of sustainable development, and expanded to the issues of environmental in the centre, it is a crucial objective for the economies, reinforced by the common European challenges and context of development. In this sense, the study‘s purpose is to analyse the development of Bulgaria through several key factors of infl uence in the three directions. Based on them, specifi c recommendations are proposed to achieve sustainable competitiveness primarily through the achievement of high added value by stimulating intellectual capacity and increasing management effi ciency. Further, it is open a discussion about a new stage in the development of the competitive race, marked by „shared“ (cooperative, solidarity) competitiveness.

In today’s globalized world, the world economy is booming. Human needs are being met more and more and the role of companies in society is growing, which unfortunately is accompanied by negative effects on the environment. In order for this role to be properly assessed, it is necessary to improve the reporting of the companies. As a result, the paradigm regarding the reporting of economic activities is changing. Integrated reporting is introduced, which includes both fi nancial and non-fi nancial indicators (social and environmental).This paper aims to explore the essence and importance of integrated reporting as one of the conditions for sustainable growth and development of enterprises. The main thesis is that, at the present stage of economic development, the presentation of non-fi nancial information is one of the main factors for enhancing the competitiveness of each enterprise.

The purpose of the present report is to outline the extent of the disinformation war between Russia and the EU (this does not mean, of course, that the centre of disinformation wars against the EU is, as a rule, always and only related with Moscow; such actions begin very often. from Islamist sites), its specific manifestations and the main "battlefields". This study provides a brief overview of the activities of the East StratCom Team, the Strategic Communications Task Force to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the European External Action Service (EEAS), its effectiveness and recognizability. It also shows how the main suspected opponent in the face of Russia reacts on the other side of the "front" and outlines some possible directions for further counteraction not only on "Brussels" level but also on national level in the member states.

The aim of this report is to present the essence, the main dimensions and the issues accompanying the formation of the European Energy Union. To achieve this goal, the following research tasks have been performed: the main goals of the Energy Union and the measures set by the European Union for achieving these goals have been systematized and analysed; a summary and analysis of major scientific publications on the topic is presented; the research methodology based on the content analysis is defined in concrete terms; the results of the research and discussion on them are presented. The main thesis defended in the paper considers the importance of the issue in the context of the contemporary aspirations for the decarbonisation of the European economy. The European Energy Union sets specific goals and new mechanisms for managing European energy, climate and environmental policies. The Energy Union foresees closer coordination of the actions under these policies at both EU and member states level which would lead to greater synergies of the efforts and convergence of the achievements in the energy field for the whole European territory. The establishment of the European Energy Union would be conditional upon reaching a new level of energy partnership across the EU where the competition would give way to cooperation. This is how the formation of the Energy Union would lead to strengthening of the EU.

The correct assessment and efficient management of costs of a tourism enterprise is essential for its economic sustainability and solvency under the conditions of a market environment, which is characterized by instability, intense competition and the challenges of implementing new sources of growth – innovation of tourism operations. The report addresses some of these issues. Basic scientific cost analysis methods were examined. A practical study of real operating enterprise performing hotel and restaurant activities was performed. On this basis, certain comments were revealed and relevant conclusions were drawn.

The report examines the current state, territorial features and long-term trends in the supply, demand and efficiency of accommodation facilities in the Rila-Pirin tourist region for a period of 20 years, which addresses the acute information gap regarding the situation and trends in the development of tourist regions. The region is emerging as one of the leading in Bulgaria, with the exception of the Black Sea regions. It is emphasized that its tourist development is determined by a limited number of municipalities, that the change in its position is determined mainly by the trends of domestic demand and that the rapid quantitative growth does not lead to a corresponding improvement of the performance of accommodation establishments.

This paper discusses the practices of television in Bulgaria in covering the unfolding of the COVID-19 crisis in the country. The research is centered on the central news bulletin of the Bulgarian National Television, the only public service media with national coverage, during the period 13 March – 12 April 2020, the first month of the emergency situation in the country. The methods used are observation and frame analysis of the news bulletins structure as well as analysis of the coverage of the coronavirus epidemic and its impact on the society. The expected result is to uncover the process how television news are shaping the new normal under Covid-19 in society, economy and the health care system. Based on the approaches to the theme and the communication process challenges some predictions are made on how public service TV media in Bulgaria should evolve in the near future.

The report presents at the practicalities of digital tools and strategies for e-Commerce business creation, such as: knowledge of key concepts and tools in online commerce; researching, analyzing and defining a business idea, based on market signals and understanding and using the major online trading platforms. The goal is to present a successful e-Store from scratch. At the beginning of the report were laid the theoretical foundations and analysis in the development of online commerce, such as: the nature and functioning of the e-Store, the reasons for starting an e-commerce business by digital entrepreneurs, and presented various techniques and methods for finding a profitable idea for an online store, a suitable market and the perfect product for it. The analysis approaches used are the various digital tools and platforms available in the arsenal of entrepreneurs. The second part of the report presents techniques and methods for discovering a profitable business idea for an online store, an appropriate market and the perfect product for it, focusing on market analysis, niche and product, creating the image of the ideal online store customer. The process of product selection is reviewed, among the many entrepreneurial ideas for online business, the criteria for evaluating these entrepreneurial ideas related to the product, the methods and digital tools for validating the entrepreneurial idea are described, and finally the process for selecting and preparing a digital e-Store launch platform.

This study aims to follow the political and public debates related to the ratification of the Istanbul Convention in Bulgaria in the period 2018 - 2020, reflected in the media. It reflects as well the specific measures taken by the Bulgarian Government and the actions of our civil society. Modern societies are undergoing significant social, economic, cultural and political transformations. The technologically defined information and communication environment creates new opportunities for a new type of democratic citizenship. On the other hand, the modern media ecosystem determines the types and forms of communication, which respectively affect the quality of information flows. The aim of the study is to trace the political actions regarding the Istanbul Convention, directly related to the public influence, reflected by the Bulgarian media ecosystem.

The article highlights essential features of the Professor’s intellectual and spiritual image, his vivid and fascinating personality, moral and ethical advancement and erudition. The author reveals the favourable and fruitful influence of Professor Kosta Pergelov as a scientist, academician, pedagogue and educator on generations of students, young researchers, scholars, lecturers. The Professor’s enormous contribution to accounting as science and practice, to the accounting education and the establishment of the postgraduate education system in Bulgaria and its functioning, is also highlighted and emphasized.The author recreates her memories from her long-term collaboration with Professor Kosta Pergelov and relies on works created by the Professor, which have turned into emblematic milestones for contemporary Bulgarian accounting science, and into a substantial part of its golden fund.

The Place of Statistics and Econometrics in the Economic Education in the World's Top Universities

The paper examines what place statistics and econometrics occupy in the curricula of future economists with bachelor degree in the top 10 universities according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 (Social Sciences & Management), compared to Bulgarian universities. It is found that students majoring in economics at these top universities must study at least one statistical course and one econometric course. The mandatory nature does not deprive them of the opportunity to choose the course most suitable for them from the many offered in the statistical and econometric block. Training in statistic and econometric courses is tied to the use of statistical and econometric software.
