Since its very beginnings the Herzegovinian Franciscan Province of Our Lady's Assumption based in Mostar has been paying great attention to the education and up bringing of its boarding-school students. For this purpose it built the Franciscan Classical Grammar School with the right of publicity, including seminary and convict for outside pupils, at Široki Brijeg, as well as the Noviciate at Humac, and Franciscan Divinity College in Mostar, the first higher-education institution in the City on the Neretva. lt entrusted the task of education and upbringing of its rising new generation and of the illiterate population to its outstanding and tested members. One of the most deserving educational workers in the Province and Herzegovina in general was definitely fra Didak Buntić, professor of Latin, Greek and German languages. ln 1895 he came as teacherand educator to Široki Brijeg, to the then Education Institute that was just assuming the character of a grammar school. Together with other teachers he started the hard work of establishing all eight grades according to the regulations in force at that time. ln 1910 he was appointed head master of the Franciscan Classical Grammar School at Široki Brijeg. He held this position all way until the year 1919 when he was elected provincial by Herzegovinian Franciscans. The crown of all his efforts as teacher, professor and head master was the first schoolleaving examination at the Široki Brijeg Grammar School.

The oldest medieval settlement in Đakovo developed on the later site of the parish church. We may thus conclude that the position of the parish church indicates the site of the settlement at the time of the formation of the parish in the early Middle Ages. Đakovo thus offers an opportunity to trace continuity from the eighth century onwards, yet for the area around the castrum and the town it may only be traced from the thirteenth century on. Later development of the town around the second centre was a consequence of the urban development in the feudal Middle Ages. The site of the parish church remained important into the twelfth or the thirteenth centuries, when, similarly to elsewhere in Croatia, a new public space (square) began to take shape outside the existing settlement, in the fi elds or in the proximity of an existing or newly erected feudal court. The parish church came to be the only trace of the old settlement, and the feudal court (burgh) the axis of a new administrative centre. In the late Middle Ages, these two separate entities functioned as one whole. The settlement around the parish church had not ceased to develop following the transfer of the administrative centre to a new location, and the burial intensity at the pertaining cemetery remained constant. This site, obviously, remained the main cemetery in Đakovo. Nonetheless, this area retained an agricultural appearance through the Middle Ages. The process that took place in Đakovo closely resembles urban developments in other old settlements of this type in Northern Croatia and Hungary.

The work studies the modes of existence of the lyrical subject in bivernacular poetry by Dragutin Domjanić. The first part constructs a theoretical framework by relying on some of the most contemporary postulates on the status and different presentations of the lyrical subject (lyrical »I«) as the basic textual focalizing instance in the sphere of poetry. The second part is dedicated exclusively to detecting the types of the lyrical subject and communicational situations in Domjanić’s poetry. In this respect, special attention is also given to the types of the addressee and equally visible differences between the Kajkavian and Štokavian »mode of the lyrical subject«.

In the South-Slavic regions, revolution poetry was present as early as the Middle Ages in both its basic forms—oral and written literature—among almost all the South-Slavic peoples, although the quality and intensity varied. In the war time periods in the Balkans, this medium of social pro-activism was gaining more significance and was promoted to occupy the central position of the literary throne where the peculiar political role also determined its aesthetical value to a great degree. It is precisely for this reason that a qualitative stratification of this layer of our shared spiritual heritage took place and was, in many aspects, founded both on the premises of poetics, oral or written revolution poetry, but also their transitional genres of poetry on the labouring masses and the partisan folk song. It is the very oral tradition level of such poetics that was characterized as ’’stereotypical”, whereas the written tradition varied depending on the erudition and the quality of the very author, and would at times trespass the revolutionary framework only to be engrossed into universal lyrical values of the South-Slavic and world literature.

One of the basic propositions of Josip Županov’s Egalitarian Syndrome Theory, the proposition of the egalitarian syndrome as a cluster of inherited informal norms, is compatible with several theoretical concepts of cultural inertia. From the perspective of Path Dependence theories, persistence of the egalitarian syndrome can be explained by the agency of factors responsible for the reproduction of social norms. These factors are not responsible for the genesis of a certain social phenomenon (for example, the norms), but rather for its reproduction over time. According to the results of recent empirical studies, one of the factors of egalitarian syndrome reproduction could be found in the costs of transition. On this basis, as well as on the basis of the proposition of a differentiation between the generative and the reproductive factors of social phenomena, we legitimise a thesis stating that the costs of transition did not create the egalitarian syndrome in a post-socialist social context, but rather contributed to its persistence. Possible sources of hypotheses about additional reproductive factors of the egalitarian syndrome in transitional circumstances are provided by the concept of cultural inertia that stems from the theoretical perspective of institutionalism, Robert Boyd and Peter J. Richerson’s theory of cultural evolution, as well as Michael Tomasello’s ratchet concept. Furthermore, in accordance with Albert Hirschman’s idea of a “tunnel effectˮ, we can assume that the expected social mobility stagnation could be a specific factor of egalitarian syndrome reproduction.

This article analyses the proposal to include trading at farmers' markets as an element of intangible cultural heritage in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia. The first part outlines the broader context of how the idea of nomination came about, along with a re-examination of how the public perceives the term heritage in Croatia, and the elements by which farmers' markets – the perception of which has an unavoidable material aspect (space, goods, money) – are recognized as intangible heritage. This is followed by a critical look at the central points of inclusivity in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage: the variety of ways in which heritage can exist and the forms through which it can manifest itself, as well as the central role this document assigns to communities as the creators and guardians of heritage. Based on this, the last part consists of an analysis of the application for including trading at farmers' markets in the national list. This analysis is focused on the issue of the community and its representation, i.e. the issue of the repercussions that obtaining heritage status can have on communities and culture, primarily in light of the proposed "safeguarding measures".

In the sector of culture, similarly to the role of firms in the corporate sector, theatres have the task of informing and maintaining the relationship with the audience. These tasks are mainly carried out by marketing and PR departments, or advertising. Due to specific organization of public relations, two qualitative and one quantitative research studies were conducted in the ”Gavella“ Drama Theatre. The goal of the first research, through the method of in-depth interview, was to determine how the employees of the ”Gavella“ Drama Theatre see the strategic communication of the theatre. The goal of the second research was to investigate the image of the ”Gavella“ Drama Theatre and the reception of performances through the method of focus group. The goal of the third research was to examine the characteristics and user preferences of the ”Gavella’s“ audience through the method of survey. The conclusions of the research show bidirectional influence: the influence of the theatre’s image on individual expectations of spectators through the repertoire, and the influence of strategic communication on the theatre’s image.

Music education provided by music school has an optimal proportion of traditional and contemporary pedagogical methods, thus serving as a good example of successful coexistence of the “old” and the “new” in education. Its constant challenge is questioning the demands of time and planning necessary educational adjustments. This is the premise which this work focuses on and has come into being as part of the activities carried out to mark the 190th anniversary of the founding of Varaždin Music School and exploring today’s expectations of the education students receive in this school. The research, which was voluntary and anonymous, involved 152 Varaždin Music School students. The sample included students in the first preparatory grade, and in Grades from 1 to 4 of the secondary music school. The questionnaire on expectations of music education designed for this research was used. The t-test showed no statistically significant differences in the expectations of music education in the music school with respect to the sex of the respondents. An exception is the expectation of earnings, where the estimate of male students that they learn music because it creates the prospects for good earnings is statistically significantly higher than that of the female (t=3.81, p=0.000) respondents. Kruskal-Wallis’s test amongst the constructed groups - 1st and 2nd grade of preparatory education for secondary music school (MS43); 1st and 2nd grade of secondary MS; 3rd and 4th grade of secondary MS - showed statistically significant differences in the estimates of expectations of music education regarding the following statements: my parents motivated me to go to music school (estimates increase with age), I was surprised that for MS one has to regularly practice playing/singing (estimates decrease with age), I go to MS because I want to be a professional musician (estimates increase with age), MS did not meet my expectations (estimates increase with age), I learn music because it allows good earnings (estimates increase with age), I enrolled in MS because playing and singing is not difficult (estimates decrease with age), MS should offer more practical music content (estimates increase with age), MS does not provide enough theoretical music content (estimates increase with age), the most important in MS is to achieve good marks (estimates decrease with age).
