Summary/Abstract: Since its very beginnings the Herzegovinian Franciscan Province of Our Lady's Assumption based in Mostar has been paying great attention to the education and up bringing of its boarding-school students. For this purpose it built the Franciscan Classical Grammar School with the right of publicity, including seminary and convict for outside pupils, at Široki Brijeg, as well as the Noviciate at Humac, and Franciscan Divinity College in Mostar, the first higher-education institution in the City on the Neretva. lt entrusted the task of education and upbringing of its rising new generation and of the illiterate population to its outstanding and tested members. One of the most deserving educational workers in the Province and Herzegovina in general was definitely fra Didak Buntić, professor of Latin, Greek and German languages. ln 1895 he came as teacherand educator to Široki Brijeg, to the then Education Institute that was just assuming the character of a grammar school. Together with other teachers he started the hard work of establishing all eight grades according to the regulations in force at that time. ln 1910 he was appointed head master of the Franciscan Classical Grammar School at Široki Brijeg. He held this position all way until the year 1919 when he was elected provincial by Herzegovinian Franciscans. The crown of all his efforts as teacher, professor and head master was the first schoolleaving examination at the Široki Brijeg Grammar School.
