Gvardjilas Klde Cave in Georgia. Celebrating the Centennial of Polish Archaeologist Stefan Krukowski’s Research

Jaskinia Gvardjilas Klde w Gruzji. Opracowanie wydane w stulecie badań polskiego archeologa Stefana Krukowskiego

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Russian,Polish,Georgian

Keywords: Stefan Krukowski; Georgia; Gvardjilas Klde Cave; archaeology; Paleolithic

Critical edition of the unpublished text of Stefan Krukowski, one of the fathers of Polish archaeology, regarding his research on the cave site in Georgia in 1916. The book, edited in Russian, Polish, Georgian and English, consists of the introductory part (consisting Krukowski’s biography, history of research in the site under discussion and of the research on the Paleolithic in Georgia in general), of the text of Krukowski and accompanying illustrations, as well as of the separate modern tables with drawings and photos of the artifacts. Stefan Krukowski, born in 1890, a loner who never completed secondary school or went to university, a Polish rescarcher of the Palaeolithic, founder of a research school, an inspiring teacher of many Polish prehistorians, arrived in Georgia in May of 1916. He explored caves and rock shelters for two years in the foothills. The monograph on the Gvardjilas Klde Cave was written over 1000 years ago, yet the analyses it contains might just as well have been written by a contemporary archaeologist. The history of European archaeology might have taken a completely different path in this publication had been published in 1918, as Stefan Krukowski had planned.

Dongola 2015-2016. Fieldwork, conservation and site management

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw; archaeological fieldworks; conservation work; Old Dongola; Makuria

The Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw mission to Old Dongola has been excavating the site for over 50 years. This volume is a second comprehensive report on fieldwork and conservation conducted in 2015–2016 by a team led by Włodzimierz Godlewski. The contributions report on the work of recent seasons and present in-depth studies on the site’s urban development, architecture and building techniques. The volume also includes results of the most recent specialized research on material brought to light during these and earlier campaigns. The discussed categories of find include inscriptions, ostraka, pottery, animal bones, and textiles. The royal city of Old Dongola was the political and economic center of Makuria, a medieval Christian kingdom. It flourished from the 5th/6th century, when the royal complex on the Citadel was built and enclosed within massive stone fortifications. Over the centuries, other representative buildings were founded, among them the imposing Throne Hall later converted into a mosque that still towers over the site today. Equally impressive are the religious complexes unearthed in Dongola. The Makurian capital’s churches and monastic buildings boast stunning mural paintings and inscriptions that shed light on local religious practice, while their architectural design testifies to the skills of local builders. After the royal court abandoned Dongola in 1364, the city remained an important urban center, as indicated by the extensive residential quarters functioning on and around the Citadel for several centuries. The city, still a vital node in the long-distance trade network, was inhabited by a lively community, which cultivated old traditions and embraced new trends. The wealth of archaeological finds recovered on the site in the seasons under consideration contributes new data to studies on the history of Dongola , as well as the culture, art., architecture and economy of the kingdom of Makuria.

Sustainable development

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: city; region; spatial planning; Colombia; Warsaw; sustainable development

In Poland and in Latin American countries socio-economic development has large environmental costs. The ruling elites, in the name of economic growth, do not care enough to follow the recommendations for such resource management as to reduce all types of pollution and emissions harmful to humans and the environment. The societies themselves are also not fully aware of these changes. This publication is a continuation of the topics discussed in earlier monographs, which were the result of joint research of Polish and Latin American geographers within many projects dedicated to urban issues. It is the second of the two volumes published in 2021 and contains texts presenting new case studies and new ideas about sustainable development, risk and local development in Poland, Colombia and other Latin American countries. Thousands of pages have already been written on sustainable development. However, the subject is still relevant. Processes occurring in the environment, especially the climate change, only emphasize the need for further research and discussion on the subject. In this monograph we return to the issue of understanding and implementing the idea of sustainable development in Poland and Latin America. We also join the discussion on sustainable urban development and governance. Finally, by presenting a few examples, we address the issue of the conflicting nature of sustainable development policies in some countries and regions. The book also introduces the reader to the issue of education on sustainable development. As part of the cooperation of Polish and Latin American geographers academics of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of Warsaw University have been lecturers at doctoral studies in urban and regional sustainable development and post-doctoral studies in Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Manizales in Colombia (Doctorado en Desarrollo Sostenible y Posdoctorado en Ciencias de la Tierra y el Medio Ambiente). Doctoral students and lecturers from the University of Manizales have visited Poland many times in joint symposia and workshops. In 2017 a Polish-Colombian monograph in Spanish was published in Colombia and in 2018 two scientific monographs, both in Spanish and English, were brought out by the University of Warsaw Press. This volume is the second of the two published in 2021 and contains only English texts on sustainable development, risk and local development in Poland, Colombia and some other Latin American countries.
