Scrinia Slavonica

Scrinia Slavonica

Scrinia Slavonica

Frequency: 1 issues / Country: Croatia

SCRINIA SLAVONICA, annual review of the Croatian Historical Institute, Department for history of Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja, publishes contributions dealing with the history of North-Eastern Croatia, i.e. of the historical region of Slavonia (in the modern geographical sense of this term) with Srijem and the Croatian part of Baranja. The annual aims at establishing regional history of Slavonia as a meaningful frame for a productive historical research. It is open for publishing both in-depth research contributions and articles of synthesis or recapitulation, as well as editions of relevant source texts in limited selections. Besides that, a part of the annual's space is dedicated to works on broader theoretical or methodological issues, primarily those applicable to concrete regional research projects. Finally, through articles in translation and review articles it will be attempted to help Croatian historians in a continous following of historiographical processes and interesting events in Slavonia's neighbouring countries - Hungary, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina - because all of them constitute an area which was encompassed during past centuries by various structures of mutual connections and relationships, a consequence of this being an overlap between interests (while not necessarily a correspondence of results) of their respective modern historiographies, and therefore a need for communication, sharing of knowledge, cooperation, and well-founded dialogue.

Stjepan Tomašević (1461.-1463.) - slom srednjovjekovnoga Bosanskog Kraljevstva - Zbornik radova

Author(s): / Language(s): Croatian

Keywords: Bosnia; Middle Ages; fall of Bosnia; Ottomans;

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the coronation of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, by the papal legates in November 1461 in Jajce, the Croatian Institute of History from Zagreb and the Catholic Faculty of Theology from Sarajevo marked this event in 2011 with a special scientific conference. This event, which soon proved to be a direct prelude to the collapse of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom, was commemorated with the aim of gaining new insights and deepening knowledge about this historiographical topic. Although both Stjepan Tomašević himself and the collapse of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom have been subjects of interest in Croatian, Bosnian-Herzegovinian, and Serbian historiography, as evidenced by numerous previously published works, the mentioned anniversary provided an opportunity for a fresh examination and deepening of understanding of this historical theme. The international scientific conference "Stjepan Tomašević (1461-1463) - The Collapse of the Medieval Bosnian Kingdom," held on November 11th and 12th, 2011 in Jajce, gathered distinguished scholars from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Hungary. Their presentations, collected in this anthology, constitute four comprehensive thematic sections.

A History Of The Croats: The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries (vol. 2)

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: History; Croats; nineteenth century; twentieth century;

There are very few books on Croatian history in English, especially those covering the entire history of Croatia and the Croats from prehistory to the present day. For this reason, the researchers at the Croatian Institute of History, the largest and most important historiographical institution in the Republic of Croatia, decided to write a history according to the best academic standards, i.e. objectively and impartially described, and explain the most important processes, events, movements, organizations, political parties, and individuals in Croatian history that significantly influenced its course. The many centuries of Croatian presence in this area at the crossroads of Central and South-Eastern Europe have been crucially determined by the constant interaction of Croats with their immediate and more distant neighbours. It is equally important to keep in mind that the supreme political (state) centre of the Croats and the Croatian state was not always within the Croatian ethnic and political area. Consequently, the political, social, and economic development of the Croats was often influenced by external factors, so it is sometimes difficult for the uninitiated reader to understand the main historical factors and causes that have unquestionably shaped Croatian history until the present day.

Keywords: dissidents; communist regime; historiography;

The international scientific conference "Dissidence in Contemporary History" was held on November 19, 2009, at the Croatian Institute of History in Zagreb. The conference was organized by the institute's project "Power and Society: The Communist System of Governance in Croatia 1945-1990", and the immediate impetus for its organization was given by Mr. Daniel Ivin. The organizing committee conceived of the topic of dissidence to be approached exclusively analytically, with an emphasis on the following questions: methodological problems, historical-political framework, the system in Croatia and Yugoslavia, the attitude of foreign countries towards dissidents, individuals, social groups and movements in Croatia, the relationship between politics and culture and "case studies".

‘Rightism’ in the political and cultural life of Croatia at the intersection of two centuries

Pravaštvo u hrvatskome političkom i kulturnom životu u sučelju dvaju stoljeća

Author(s): / Language(s): Croatian

Keywords: Croatia; 'rightism'; political life; cultural life;

After the collapse of the political ideas that emerged from the revolutionary movement of 1848/49, a regime of neo-absolutism was introduced in the lands of the Habsburg Monarchy. During its ten-year period, the beginnings of the Pravaš ideology can be found. Ante Starčević and Eugen Kvaternik, disappointed by the collapse of the Revolution and its ideas of national and civil liberties, founded Pravaštvo as a new Croatian national integration and political ideology. In building the Pravaš ideology, its founders were inspired by the liberal principles of the French Revolution in their thinking about the Croatian state-legal tradition. Both undoubtedly emphasized the establishment of the Croatian state as their ultimate goal. During the session of the Croatian Parliament in 1861, the nucleus of the Party of Rights and its future versions was created. The representations of the renewed Rijeka County, which were accepted by its assembly and composed by A. Starčević, the great notary of Rijeka County, give the new party its first programmatic principles. All of them are contained in Starčević's fundamental idea that the Kingdom of Croatia is "completely independent of any state".

Forests represent one of the greatest natural assets of Croatia. In terms of preservation and quality, Slavonian forests of pedunculate oak are particularly renowned today. Slavonian pedunculate oak gained its worldwide fame in the mid-19th century, especially celebrated at that time as an excellent material for barrel staves in France. Since then, the timber industry has become an important element of the Slavonian economy, and its influence is visible in all segments of society. However, Slavonian forests have a much longer history. They are long-lasting structures that have conditioned human life in Slavonia in various ways. Likewise, throughout history, humans have continuously interacted with Slavonian forests through numerous interventions and daily practices related to the forests.

Professor Mirdita has also been an honorary member and advisor of the Albanian Institute (Albanisches Institut) in St. Gallen (Switzerland) since its foundation in 2002. Although he retired in 2004, the scientific community of the Croatian Institute of History will always consider him its distinguished member whose research results are an indispensable part of not only Croatian and Albanian but also European historiography. His life and scientific path took place (and still actively takes place) between Croatia and Albanians (especially Kosovo).
