Transpositions of Opera Styles in Works of Culture

Transpozycje stylów opery w dziełach kultury

Author(s): Dobrochna Ratajczakowa,Iwona Puchalska,Ryszard Daniel Golianek,Adam Regiewicz,Elżbieta Nowicka,Katarzyna Lisiecka,Marcin Bogucki,Paweł Regiewicz,Anna Igielska,Przemysław Krzywoszyński,Natalia Kaminiczna,Maciej Szargot,Barbara Szargot / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: transposition; opera; union of arts; music video; music album; novel; poetry; theatre; staging; farce

The monograph Transpositions of Opera Styles in Works of Culture comprises interdisciplinary reflections on literature, film, music and image in connection with the art of opera and its cultural contexts. The authors of the chapters have used as their point of reference works in which there are various transpositions of operatic styles, both in the art of earlier eras and in the phenomena of contemporary culture (including poetry, novels, music videos, dance theatre, computer games). The conceptual anchor for the issues raised was established by the traditional aesthetic categories of "style" and "work" (styles of opera, work in culture), read in two ways: (1) because of the genre-form specificity and the individual dramatic, musical, theatrical, literary and other components that determine the phenomenon of opera, in addition to (2) a form of all kinds of signum of operatic art and its themes recorded in cultural works, allowing, among other things, the search for a paradigm of "opera-ness", open to various ideological, cultural and aesthetic readings. The approaches, analyses and interpretations of the works presented here take into account the preservation of the memory of the context from which the material to be transposed originated, and the results of creative processes are characterized by formal-artistic reference to the initial original (motif, theme, idea, style, thread, form, the entire work), establishing an indispensable element of the trans-positio process. It is thanks to this that the results of such processes are represented and actualized in art and culture, and with them also in humanistic reflections, the experience of the vitality of tradition, the art of memory and the melding of horizons, all confirming the multi-level symbolic and allegorical rooting of the art of past eras as well as of modern times.

Artificial paradises

Sztuczne raje

Author(s): / Language(s): Croatian,Czech,Polish,Serbian

Keywords: intoxications; culture; literature; art; emotions; impressions; stimulants; imagination; euphoria; ecstasy; communication

The scientific monograph Artificial paradises: intoxications with culture – intoxications in culture is a polyphonic project on understanding the titular phenomenon, identifying its forms, manifestations and consequences that are both a subject of description of culture, and its integral component, a source of ecstatic, euphoric or at least hedonistic reactions and behaviors. One of the functions of culture and art is to evoke emotions, often extreme (and not always positive) ones that result in experiences comparable to narcotic or alcoholic intoxication. Contemporary theories of literary and artistic communication (based on an emphatic or somatic mode of reception) allow for a return to these reception conceptions seemingly abandoned a long time ago, bringing culture back to what is in popular opinion its unwaveringly primary task of delivering sensory impressions and emotional affections. It is in this sense that the initial metaphor of “artificial paradises” was interpreted by the authors of the various chapters in the monograph. The metaphor was applied to all literary and artistic tools that shape reality represented in a way that enables one to create an imagined world which suits the spiritual and emotional needs of a human being more than that one which is known for empirical experience. The monograph is therefore a multi-authored overview of different variants of understanding cultural intoxications, recognizing and indicating their presence or transmission in the culture of the Slavs.

Old and New Metaphors of the Internet

Dawne i nowe metafory Internetu

Author(s): Marek Hendrykowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Internet; metaphor; contemporary culture

The title of this book makes an important distinction between the old and new metaphors of the Internet. This is not a matter of dichotomously opposing one with the other, but of recognising the difference that separates the Web at the time of its 20th-century origins and the Web in the diverse and technologically advanced form it has today, in the third decade of the 21st century. Both reveal and confirm that the phenomenon of the Internet as a modern medium (which has been one of the key components of social life and elements of contemporary culture for several decades) has not only a current present-day state but also an ever-lengthening past, year-by-year becoming more layered. The author's thesis is that the metaphorical expressions of the Internet dealt with in this book are in fact nothing more than the most varied manifestations of the social discourse which has been going on for years and which is permanently revolving around the Web.

Przesilenie

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: education; crisis; turning point; critical pedagogy; social pedagogy; uncertainty; school; teaching; learning

The book is a post-conference volume of the 11th Pedagogical Congress and is devoted to the issue formulated as Turning point. Crises in educational contexts – challenges for pedagogy. It is a collection of texts by the participants of the session organized by the editors of the volume, which combined the interests of critical pedagogues, sociologists of education and social pedagogues, focusing on social, structural and environmental conditions, going beyond the constructivist paradigm, through the pluralism of ideas and interpretative frameworks. The events of recent decades, and in, new crises such as climate change, pandemics, ethnic and cultural wars, mass migration, religious fundamentalism, the monopoly of neoliberal economies, the expansion of poverty, the pathogenic use of the Internet, educational systems in the service of the past, constitute constant challenges for pedagogy (including social inequalities in education). The authors of the texts seek an answer to the question: What should pedagogy be like in the 21st century? What is its social, political, economic and cultural role, locally and globally? What actions should educators take in the face of growing inequalities and increasing uncertainty?

A treatise on evil work

Traktat o złej robocie

Author(s): Krystyna Daszkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: state; political system; law; society

A treatise on evil work is in no way a historical dissertation on the beginnings of the People's Republic of Poland under Gierek, which were amusing in their coarseness; rather, it a timeless and systemic treatise (in the literal and figurative sense) on the reality of a system in which humans were mere objects, not subjects. This is expressed clearly in the nature of the literature used and referenced in the book, which often relates to publications from foreign countries and issued many years before the publication of this treatise here. This is a treatise that is still fully relevant today, under conditions in which citizens are sometimes treated as objects by the state, and in which the employee is also treated as an object in the workplace. No matter how one looks at any state system, it is always underpinned by basic values such as truth, honesty and respect, and the violation of these values does not only occur in a totalitarian system. In such a regime, the violation of these values is permanent and intense, which does not change the fact that it also takes place in contemporary Poland (Robert Zawłocki, Człowiek, który szuka prawdy, czyli słów kilka o Profesor Krystynie Daszkiewicz i Traktacie o złej robocie).

Keywords: war in Ukraine; difficult events in the modern world; education in times of crisis; challenges for education

The monograph entitled Difficult Events in the Contemporary World. The Different Experiences and Perspectives of Female and Male Educators is a collection of insights from educational practitioners on the contemporary world and the difficult and dramatic events we are involved in and are witness to. It is an attempt to reflect the current experiences of European society in the form of various, sometimes very personal, narratives. It is a document of the first phase of the war in Ukraine and the reflections and experiences of people during the war and in connection with it. It brings together contributions from people representing various academic and educational centres in Europe. Each text presents a different perspective and takes up a slightly different theme. The individual texts provide a distinct narrative by the author(s) on the difficult reality in which the European and global society functions today. Together, these contributions form a common story about the dramatic changes in the modern world, ways of resolving difficulties, overcoming obstacles and attempts aimed at creating a better life, a better living.

Keywords: university; academic discourse; knowledge transfer; scientific thinking and action styles; education; interdisciplinarity

The university as a community of thinking and free people has always been of interest to researchers. A discussion of the open spaces of university discourse can provide a starting point for a debate about styles of scientific thinking and action. In the space of the university, we can certainly see scientific discourse, scientific and research discourse, but also increasingly popular science discourse or 'absent discourses'. This book is a generational transmission of knowledge, a kind of transfer between knowledge and experience and what is just entering the world of science. It is a kind of encouragement to use the scientific achievements combining the interpenetrating disciplines of academic knowledge. Texts by prominent figures from the world of science presenting various fields of science are gathered in one place. We dedicate the book to both scholars and students wishing to learn about the intersecting areas of the architecture of academic knowledge.

Philosophical education in India in the early Upanishad era

Edukacja filozoficzna w Indiach wczesnego okresu upaniszadowego

Author(s): Michał Nowicki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: philosophical education; Upanishads; Hinduism; yoga; history of education; India

This publication is the first Polish-language presentation of the history of philosophical education in ancient India. The titular issue deserves special attention, as it goes back to the well-documented sources of this phenomenon and the beginnings of Hindu philosophical thought, revealing the roots of yoga, which today enjoy such popularity. Although the book is scientific in its nature, it is addressed to a broad audience interested in Indian culture. It shows how the phenomenon of philosophical education came into being and became deeply rooted in the original initiation structures. It discusses issues related to: (1) the proper goal of education, focusing on the issues of human suffering, liberation from it, obstacles that stand in the way of achieving this goal, and finally, human cognitive potential; (2) selection of the subjects for education, including the issues of mythical origins, the issues of cognition, atman and brahman, states of consciousness and the issue of identity or the law of karma; (3) methods of educational work, taking into account the issues of initiation and the issue of direct experience of a mystical nature, the role of words in the teaching process or the beginnings of the yoga tradition. What emerges from the narrative is the rich world of philosophical explorations, full of enthusiasm and affirmation of life and faith in the possibility of achieving unconditional happiness - a world that respects tradition and boldly seeks new ways to fulfill its potential in the best possible way.

Escape from childhood

Współczesny film dla dzieci i młodzieży w świetle kina gatunków

Author(s): Jacek Nowakowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: genre cinema; cinema for young audiences; family movie; school film; horror film; western; the fairy tale

The book discusses the phenomenon of cinema intended for young audiences assimilating the content and aesthetic conventions of genre-defined films aimed at adults. The following genres were used as examples: the school film (including The Last Bell and 7 Feelings), the fairy tale (various film versions of Carlo Collodi's novel Pinocchio), the western (including Wild West Calamity Jane and Big City) and the horror film (especially The Girl with All the Gifts). This is a consequence of the disappearance of the cross-genre category of the family movie, and the changing and growing cultural consciousness of children and young people in the era of late modernity. This situation is not solely the outcome of efforts by filmmakers themselves, but it stems to an equal degree from the activities of official institutions popularising the art of filmmaking and from young viewers’ individual interpretations of films.

Pedagogisation of the products of science and art as framed in cultural performances

Pedagogizacja wytworów nauki i sztuki w ramie widowisk kulturowych

Author(s): Mariusz Dembiński / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: education; general pedagogy; theory; kitsch; cultural spectacle; ritual

The book is a collection of four statements. It covers such topics as the scientific conference, general pedagogy, kitsch and the Summer Schools of Young Educators. They are framed by a cultural spectacle which makes it possible to conceptualize topics from the side of culture that is "active" within it and to develop the theory of conferences, the structuring process in general pedagogy, the structure of kitsch, and what is termed ‘Szkołownia’. In the case of the theory of the scientific conference, reference is made to the founding myth as the basis for creating cultural performances in its ritualized and coexistent reference. In tum, structuring is the process of guiding the reader from not understanding a text to understanding it. Kitsch reveals its structure and allows us to create the "Kitschman". On the other hand, Szkołownia is described in three scenes, presenting "the drama" shaping pedagogy in the final years of the twentieth century.

Functioning of Sociotherapy Day Care Centres and the Branding of their Services

Funkcjonowanie świetlic socjoterapeutycznych oraz branding oferowanych usług

Author(s): Barbara Jankowiak,Adrianna Brzezińska,Emilia Soroko / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: sociotherapy; daycare centres; daycare institutions; branding of health services; children and adolescents

Sociotherapy as a group form of psychological and pedagogical assistance is commonly carried out in Poland in various spheres of assistance. It is mainly aimed at children and adolescents from groups at increased risk of developing disorders or those who are already experiencing problems in psychosocial functioning. However, the places particularly targeted for sociotherapeutic interactions are day care institutions where sociotherapy takes place. The aim of the project described in the book was to build up a picture of how sociotherapy day care centres (social diagnosis) function and then to develop recommendations for their functioning (impact). The monograph characterises the functioning of such day care centres in three cities (Gdańsk, Katowice, Poznań) and describes the branding of services run by these centres (or on their behalf) on websites and social networks. Furthermore, as the research took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, the way in which sociotherapy day care centres functioned in an epidemiological emergency is described, which allows us to look at ways of adapting to sudden, crisis situations.

Author(s): Jerzy Modrzewski,Agata Matysiak-Błaszczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: socialisation; association; dissociation; society; nurturing and upbringing environments

The book is dedicated to the issue of socialisation, presenting the subjective, individual image of this process or its socio-cultural contexts. In the articles presented here, the authors reveal a genuine pedagogical concern for strengthening the social commitment to protect associative socialisation experienced across generations, as well as for weakening or eliminating from these processes those events, situations and consequences involved in their dissociative arousal and continuation.

History, gender and power

Historia, płeć i władza

Author(s): Filip Kubiaczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Spain; football; footballers; women; feminism; patriarchy; sexism; history; gender; power; politics; media

The book is a continuation of the author's previous research on Spanish football in historico-cultural and political-media contexts. Unlike the previous two parts, which dealt with men's football, this one is entirely devoted to women's football, more specifically to the history of its break with the patriarchal paradigm strongly embedded in Spanish society. Analysing women's football in terms of Spain's historical development and the changes in the understanding of gender within the discourse of power, the author shows the difficult path that female footballers, referees, coaches and journalists have followed from the private (domestic) sphere, in which they were confined by the male discourse of power in the twentieth century, to the public sphere, in which, in the twenty-first century, they have gained such a position that they have become capable of producing a counter-narrative to this discourse.

The subjectivity of the child and the value of childhood

Podmiotowość dziecka i wartość dzieciństwa

Author(s): Bożena Matyjas,Danuta Opozda,Katarzyna Segiet / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: podmiotowość dziecka; wartość dziecka i dzieciństwa; odpowiedzialność rodzicielska; system wychowania Janusza Korczaka

The monograph addresses issues concerning the subjectivity of the child and the value of childhood in relation to how the ideas of Janusz Korczak are received in contemporary pedagogical. Korczak was the creator of an original system of upbringing based on respect, trust and love for the child. This recognised and respected pedagogue promoted the rights of the child, which he based on the assumption that the child is a person and that the attributes of their existence (including dignity) derive from this. Korczak attached great importance to the subjective treatment of the child, asserting that the child is the highest value. He also emphasised the child's creative approach to his or her own life and the formation of their own personality. In turn, in Korczak’s view, care during childhood, which is the right of the child, should be linked to the responsibility of adults (parents, educators in care institutions) in the process of upbringing. References to Janusz Korczak's ideas are evident in contemporary pedagogy, as exemplified by the thriving ‘Korczak Dream Schools’ in Poland. This publication is addressed to representatives of many sciences, including the humanities, social sciences, theorists and researchers dealing with childhood, teachers, educators, parents, students of sociology, pedagogy, family studies, psychologists, and also the wider audience interested in issues related to the child and childhood.

Author(s): Monika Błaszczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: aesthetics; aesthetic categories; aesthetic experience; amorphousness; theory of literature; theory of cognition; literary studies; drama; theatre; performing arts; performance studies; polysensorialism

The book is a proposal to look at contemporary 20st- and 21st-century cultural texts from a broad transdisciplinary perspective. The search for a new language of description, analysis and interpretation of phenomena in the humanities is carried out by the author "across" and through "entangling" various fields and disciplines. The difficulty in finding the correct language of theory is, of course, nothing new. However, the very search and attempt to find a language "between" discourses does seem to be a new quality. The author uses her extensive scientific background – primarily literary studies, as well as theater and cultural studies – to refer to examples from the field of literature, theater, and performance, as well as the performing and visual arts. The role of the researcher, creator and recipient is reinterpreted, as is the work itself, called an event, practice, process, experience. It is the aesthetic experience that constitutes the main axis of the discussion here. The primary direction of interest in this work concerns the transfer of concepts from science to art and to the literary area, and art is treated as a theory of cognition. The following aesthetic categories are analyzed: flowability, transparency, fluidity, roughness/roughness, viscosity, taste (tastiness) and smell, as well as roughness, noise and bustle. The titular amorphism refers both to these aesthetic categories and to the construction of the entire book and the way of writing. Amorphousness - shapelessness, and also polymorphism - multiform are two important concepts, the use of which in this dissertation oscillates between a literal approach, starting from what is physical, and a metaphorical one.

The myth of state and nation

Mit państwa i narodu

Author(s): Michał Jarnecki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: state; nation; nationalism; fascism; communism; striving for independence; Poland; Czech Republic; Slovakia; Lithuania; Latvia; Estonia; Hungary; Ukraine; Belarus

The book summarises the author's own research into the history of Central Europe, the Polish-Czech-Ukrainian triangle and the cultural heritage of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. It raises the vital and topical issue of the state myth, the national idea, and nationalism in selected Central and Eastern European countries (Poland, the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine and Belarus). Although there is much that divides these countries, they also have many things in common. Together, they emerged as independent after the First World War and faced two totalitarianism systems. They have gone on to build a system of liberal democracy, even though the pressure of current problems and the shadow of history gives populism a chance. Starting from definitions and conceptual issues, the author traces recent history through concrete examples, focuses on the 20th century, and reaches where necessary into the more distant past. He shows how the aspiration to gain or regain independence, the national idea and the myth of the ethnic state, shaped and strengthened the consciousness of the analysed communities. In the final chapters, he presents Ukrainian and Belarusian issues, two routes out of the sphere of Russian influence, albeit one unsuccessful. Ukraine, on the other hand, although bathed in blood by the onslaught of its neighbour to the east, seems to be surviving and strengthening its statehood and, ultimately, building a nation.

Post-Critical Reading

Czytanie postkrytyczne

Author(s): Tomasz Mizerkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: post-critique; constructivism; post-constructivism; Han Ulrich Gumbrecht; Rita Felski; Polish literature

The book proposes to investigate the state of literary research that emerges after the negation of constructivism. After a period typical of constructivism's dominance of the belief in the textual nature of reality, the discursive nature of human reality and the narrative identity of each subject, entirely new positions are emerging, which the monograph describes collectively. Thanks to the philosophy of presence, new phenomenology, the turn to things, ecocriticism and other transgressions of constructivism, the relations of literature to reality and subjectivity are explored in a completely new way. These are referred to in the monograph as 'post-critical reading', thus emphasising that they have been developed as another form of criticism combined with reflections on the positive relationships of works with their readers. After defining critical reading, the book focuses on two distinct evolutions of literary studies attitudes towards the deliberate negation of constructivism (H.U. Gumbrecht) or its combination with post-constructivist concepts and practices (R. Felski). The monograph also contains a number of readings of 20th- and 21st-century Polish literature in a post-critical spirit (S. Piasecki, Z. Haupt, M. Białoszewski, T. Różewicz, P. Matywiecki, A.D. Liskowacki, D. Kotas. S. Hałas, N. Malek).
