A History of the Herules

A History of the Herules

Author(s): Jan Prostko-Prostyński / Language(s): English

Keywords: Herules; Scandinavia; the Migration Period; foederati; symmachoi; Odoacer; prosopography

The book offers a critical study of Herulian history. This is the first modern monograph to present a comprehensive analysis of literary and epigraphic sources for the relatively short history of this Scandinavian people. The author eliminated the pseudo-history of the Herules and concentrating on the well-established events from the organized social life of the Herules, he reduced their share in the history of ancient and early medieval Europe, which had been uncritically expanded by some scholars in the past. Prosopography, produced for the first time, will guide the reader in the personal history of the Herules. The geographic extent of the tribe’s wanderings, invasions and campaigns (Scandinavia, Ukraine, Greece, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Bohemia, the Balkans, Italy, Asia and Africa), and their direct participation in the overthrow of the Western Roman Empire in ad 476, make their past extremely fascinating.

Grammatical Number in Psycholinguistic Research

Author(s): Piotr Gulgowski / Language(s): English

Keywords: grammatical number; numerical cognition; literature overview; psycholinguistics; neurolinguistics

The category of grammatical number is common in natural languages. Attested number systems rangę from a simple choice between singular and plural forms to morę complex number value arrangements involving, for example, dual and trial numbers. Grammatical number has an impact on almost every major part of language organization from morphosyniax through semantics to pragmatic reasoning. Mastering number forms is also a major step in language acąuisition. For these reasons, grammatical number can be of great interest to researchers inrestigating the psychology of language. This monograph discusses the findings of studies from several areas of experimental psycholinguistics. The discussed studies include seminal works in each area spanning multiple decades of research and illustrating the major investigation directions. The selection of works is also intended to familiarize the reader with the experimental techniąues employed to study different aspects of grammatical number processing, which encompass behavioral methods (number judgments, word recall, lexical decision, picture naming) as well as techniąues for monitoring the brain activity (EEG, fMRl). In addition to the overview of the literaturę dedicated to investigating grammatical number processing, the paper also offers a brief śummary of the typology of grammatical number systems in world languages and discusses the most important findings of the research on numerical cognition

The Reflection of Europeanisation: Monitoring Trends in European Public Oopinion in Transnational Comparative Surveys as a Methodological Challenge

Sondażowe zwierciadło europeizacji. Monitorowanie trendów europejskiej opinii publicznej w międzykrajowych sondażach porównawczych jako wyzwanie metodologiczne

Author(s): Piotr Jabkowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: cross-national comparative surveys; quantitative analysis; survey fieldwork; sample quality; measurement invariance; measurement quality; data harmonisation

This book considers the methodological challenges of studying Europeans' attitudes towards the European Union and European integration process, measured over 20 years within four prominent pan-European multi-wave transnational comparative surveys, i.e., Eurobarometer, the European Social Survey, the European Values Studies and the International Social Survey Program. The primary goal is to present the main challenges stemming from the diversity of research issues and the different objectives of individual projects, as well as those stemming from the specific ways in which questions are formulated, the different measurement methodologies and survey procedures, and the variable quality of the surveys. The first chapter presents the abundance of survey projects carried out on the European continent since the mid-1970s. The second chapter analyses the variation in the wording of questions about European integration and the impact of this wording on the survey results. The third chapter presents the variation in sampling and fieldwork procedures implemented in four projects. The final chapter analyses the quality of over 1,400 national surveys, which allowed the impact of different fieldwork procedures on survey process quality to be assessed. The conclusion recommends taking into account project-specific field sample implementation in the analysis of data from transnational comparative surveys.

The regulation of the energy sector in the European Union and in Ukraine. The objectives and legal measures of the energy sector-specific regulation

Regulacja sektora energetycznego w Unii Europejskiej oraz na Ukrainie. Cele i prawne środki regulacji sektora energetycznego

Author(s): Eryk Kosiński / Language(s): English,Polish,Ukrainian

Keywords: Energy sector; natural gas sector; energy sector regulation of the European Union; energy sector in Ukraine; natural gas sectors in Ukraine

This monograph is a unique, in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the laws that regulate the energy sector in Ukraine as they relate to energy sector regulation of the European Union. This work addresses the contemporary understanding of the concept of sectoral regulation and determines goals (values) and specific legal means (instruments) of regulatory intervention in both, Ukraine and the EU. The author starts with distinguishing the four basic goals of the regulation of the energy sector. The first goal is to implement and support broadly understood principles of economy. The second goal pertains to a broadly understood protection of the interests of consumers (household consumers, including vulnerable consumers) and their social welfare (social goals of regulations). The third goal is to guarantee energy security, and the fourth goal highlights environmental protection and climate action (pro-ecological objectives). The analysis uses the above concepts to assess the regulatory regimes for electricity and natural gas sectors in Ukraine and the EU. The findings indicate that the EU regulation of electricity and natural gas sector recognizes all the relevant regulatory goals. While legal measures (instruments) for the implementation of all important regulatory objectives have been introduced and legally guaranteed in Ukraine, the actual application and implementation of the laws leaves room for improvement.

The Placing of Novel Foods on the EU Market in the Light of New EU Regulations

The Placing of Novel Foods on the EU Market in the Light of New EU Regulations

Author(s): Łukasz Mikołaj Sokołowski / Language(s): English

Keywords: novel foods; food safety; food security; new technologies; innovations in agriculture; traditional food from a third country

This monograph is one of the first scholarly publications on the subject of the placing of novel foods on the European Union market after 1 January 2018. Its aim is to answer the question of whether and to what extent the regulations governing the placing on the EU market of novel foods, in particular EU Regulation No 2015/2283 and its implementing regulations, protect the health and life of humans, whilst ensuring the free movement of such foods within the EU and protecting the economic interests of both consumers and food business operators. The objective was achieved by means of an analysis of the regulations in force since 1 January 2018, aimed at, in addition to maintaining a high level of protection of consumer health and life, the opening of the EU market to safe innovations in the agri-food sector. The book presents the history of innovation in the food industry in the EU, attempts to analyse the concept of "novel food" and discusses the legal requirements and procedures for placing novel foods on the EU market as well as the principles of innovation responsibility. These considerations enabled the author to draw many interesting conclusions and put forward proposals de lege ferenda.

Non-contemporaneity

Niewspółczesność

Author(s): Tomasz Mizerkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: noncontemporaneity; experience; time in literature; Polish latest literature

Thanks to a reading of a number of works from recent Polish literature, Non-contemporaneity reveals the fundamental tension between an unnervingly integrated and compelling contemporaneity and various forms of non-contemporaneity. In Polish literature, which is heavily influenced by historical experience, there is a new sensitivity to the experience of time. A mature form of asynchronous life emerges in this, the expressions of which are described in the monograph, to show ultimately how Polish literature enters into a plastic time that is not without social hope.

Transnational act in the system of European administrative acts

Akt transnarodowy prawa europejskiego

Author(s): Maciej Kruś / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: transnational act; application of European law; European decisions

The book distinguishes and describes a particular form of activity of public administration bodies, namely issuing transnational administrative acts of European law. These acts are issued by the authorities of the Member States of the European Union. They are acts of application and are issued in specific circumstances. They have direct effect in the territory of the Member States of the European Union. These acts play a crucial role in the integration of the Single Market, and the free movement of people, services and goods. The author presents difficult and complex issues in an accessible form, adducing important aspects of the issuance of administrative decisions under European law. He provides numerous examples relating to practical areas of the economy and private life. The book will be of great use in all classes on European law or the functioning of the European administration. It is addressed to students of law, administration, European law and European studies. Moreover, the book will undoubtedly be of interest to lawyers from various professions, who might make use of it to determine the nature of an authority's action in a given area of private life (obtaining a visa) or economy (e.g. approval of medicines, biocides, decisions on financial investments). This in turn impacts on the question of whether the appropriate legal protection instruments should be adopted, i.e. in the country of origin of a legal act or in the country where the activity is carried out? The book can also be recommended to participants of training in public administration.

Poet–Teacher–Child. Works for Children by Julian Tuwim and Jan Brzechwa in the Changing Pre-school Reality

Poeta-Nauczyciel(ka)-Dziecko. Twórczość dla dzieci Juliana Tuwima i Jana Brzechwy w zmieniającej się rzeczywistości przedszkolnej

Author(s): Kinga Kuszak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: pre-school child; pre-school pedagogy; children's literature; competence of children in mid-childhood; mediating literary works for children

Julian Tuwim and Jan Brzechwa's works for children are known to all. For several generations, they have entertained readers young and old. Parents read humorous, playful pieces by both poets to their children. There is probably no one in our country who does not know Wacky Duck, Trunky the Elephant, Mr. Nightingale, who is in no hurry to get home for dinner, or inquisitive Stan, who exhausts others with his umpteen questions. The works of both poets are known to grandparents, parents and the very youngest alike. The world might be changing, but the poems of Jan Brzechwa and Julian Tuwim (and not only these works) remain resolutely relevant. But are they received in the same way? Are they interpreted today just as they once were? To what extent is the perception of both poets' work changing in the fluid, dynamically changing reality of the 21st century? To what extent did the works of Brzechwa and Tuwim inspire pre-school teachers, and to what degree do they remain a source of inspiration for modern-day teachers? How has the way of working with the poetic text by both writers changed over the years? These and other questions are posed by the author. She seeks answers to them by delving into the biographies of the poets, studying their works for young readers and those that have been considered suitable for younger audiences over time, and also by analysing teachers' proposals for using both poets' texts in their work with pre-school children. She shows ways of making their texts more accessible to children.

Advocacy of selected social problems from the sociological perspective

Rzecznictwo wybranych problemów społecznych z perspektywy socjologicznej

Author(s): Ryszard Necel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: advocacy; social worker; social work; social rights; public sphere

The book concerns the involvement of non-governmental organizations and social welfare institutions in advocating social rights. It is a sociological analysis of social practices undertaken in the name of the rights and interests of vulnerable people: disabled people, the long-term sick and victims of domestic violence. Referring to contemporary theories in the field of social sciences, the author argues that advocacy is an activity ranging from aid activities to political involvement, and social rights are not limited solely to guaranteeing social security. The book presents the results of sociological research, including individual in-depth interviews, questionnaire research and the analysis of the content of citizens' petitions and general statements of the Ombudsman. The book is written from a sociological perspective and may prove a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the practice of social rights protection activities.

“To destroy all states”. Ludwik Królikowski’s wandering ideas (1799-1879)

„Zniszczyć wszelkie państwo”. Idee polityczne Ludwika Królikowskiego (1799-1879)

Author(s): Piotr Kuligowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: History; History of Political Thought

This work is not strictly biographical. It is rather part of the study of political ideas with particular emphasis on the aspect of their fluidity and borrowings between different national and linguistic contexts. More specifically, I treat Królikowski as an illustration, albeit at the individual level, of how particular ideas can circulate and transcend boundaries, or, conversely, just how far they can be attributed to certain contexts, countries or discourses. Certain concepts can be anchored so strongly in a particular social environment that any attempt to transplant them to another will come up against an insurmountable barrier. If this is indeed the case, it means that in the history of ideas, alongside fascinating examples of mobility, there are also areas of where something akin to embargoes operate to which specific concepts cannot be applied or brought. Although diametrically opposed, both of these issues - circulation and anchoring - meet in the same field of investigation and can thus be detected using similar research procedures.

Skrypt do ćwiczeń z limnologii fizycznej

Author(s): Adam Choiński,Mariusz Ptak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: environment; physical geography; hydrology; limnology; lakes

“Script for physical limnology workshops” describes the basic issues concerning processes and phenomena occurring in lakes; referring to among others chemical and physical parameters of lake waters, dynamics of water masses, and morphological-geological conditions of their functioning. Due to the broad scope of the research, the discipline benefits from methods developed by climatology, geology, physics, chemistry, etc. The script is primarily addressed to students of environmental majors. It also points to ways of solving selected research problems through designated example tasks. This knowledge provides the basis for further detailed and frequently interdisciplinary studies of lake ecosystems.

Informational Reading. Infographics in Cognitive Processes

Czytanie informacyjne. Infografiki w procesach poznawczych

Author(s): Mateusz Leszkowicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: informational reading; cognitive process; visual communication; cognitive load; affordances; text-picture integration; multimodality; CTML theory; information design; information graphics; infographics; graphic design; eyetracking

Contemporary media messages are becoming visually fragmented. This is noticeable in the graphic design of many textbooks, magazines, web interfaces or infographics. These media are particularly strong in exposing small portions of text and image. In this sense, they are deprived of the sequential and linear reception typical for the reception of a work of fiction or film. Thus, the question arises as to how the recipients search for starting points for reading and according to which criteria they create their own cognitive paths during the reception, e.g. of infographics. In this work, the answer to the question of whether a diverse graphic layout (design) influences teenagers' visual attention and understanding of content. For this purpose, a method of measuring eyeball movements (oculography) was used during exposure of different types of infographics. The results of this research are widely used in graphic design of printed materials and electronic texts.

Understanding Leisure. Transformation, Identity, Experience

(Z)rozumieć czas wolny. Przeobrażenia, tożsamość, doświadczanie

Author(s): Dorota Mroczkowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: free time; leisure; transformations; identity; experience, border and boundary areas; reflectiveness; everyday life; technology; globalisation

The idea of the book: Understanding Leisure. Transformations, Identity, Experience is to attempt to understand leisure in its core dimensions related to change, identity, and experience. It is essential to create a comprehensive picture of leisure as a cognitive, interactive, symbolic and emotional category, rather than creating the fundamental definition and way of thinking about it. Taking inspiration from such theoretical orientations as symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, existentialism, sociology of everyday life (Berger, Luckman 1983; Kelly 1972, 1996, 2003, 2012; Kelly, Godbey 1992; Giddens 2001, 2003; de Certeau 2008, 2011; Kaufman 2013), inspiration from the psychology of experience (Csikszentmihalyi 2005), postmodernism (Rojek 1995, 2005, 2010), and also border theories (Nippert-Eng1996; Zerubavel1991), allows leisure to be thought of as a dynamic, socially and culturally variable category, located at the intersection of micro and macro social processes, and associated with the dynamics of individuals' experiences. At the same time, referring to the reflexive methodology enables us to maximize perception and understanding of leisure by using various research methods and techniques (Strauss 1993; Shaw 1997; Dupuis 1999; Freeman 2001; Giddens 2001; Fischer-Rosenthal 2005; Feighery 2006; Denzin, Lincoln 2010). The aim of the first part, Transformations, is to look at the historical and social processes of leisure. The following chapters of this part is related to essential processes that characterize and stimulate its development and transformations, such as industrialization, urbanization, mass media and technology, commercialization, globalization, and acceleration. These processes have contributed to the situation today where we are faced with several questions, problems, or challenges concerning the identity of leisure, which in turn will be discussed in the second part, entitled The identity. As the reader will notice, the aim of this section is not to revolutionize thinking about leisure. I also do not want to come down on the side of a crisis or outdated sociology of leisure. Above all, I want to refer to the key processes within the sub-discipline that, in connection with the evolution of the theory and practice of leisure, and the transformations taking place in contemporary reality, make it possible to reflect on its status. The third part of the book, Towards the Method, aims to present research assumptions based on a hermeneutical-interpretative perspective and a reflexive methodology. The fourth part entitled: Experience, is based on my longitudinal studies, and introduces the reader to the meanings, experiences and emotions of leisure performed in various situational contexts. In the subsequent chapters of the book, analyses of different types of research material are combined, and the methods and techniques used deepen the accumulated knowledge. I refer to existing data: the North American and the European surveys and time-budget studies, international comparative research, and smaller European research projects, as well as surveys and budget studies in Poland. On the other hand, I refer to my research projects, which were conducted in Poland and are based on qualitative methodologies, and explore the everyday understanding of leisure. The book is written from a local perspective, and the main points of reference are the two dominant traditions of leisure - the American and the European schools. It is worth emphasizing that the category of leisure is not universal, but is assigned to a particular cultural, geographical, and historical formation called modernity. Leisure becomes essential in a particular type of society and constitutes one of its essential aspects.

Situationist Theory in Action. Prussia and the Reich before the Reich Court

Teoria sytuacjonizmu w zastosowaniu. Prusy i Rzesza przed Trybunałem Państwa

Author(s): Jerzy W. Ochmański / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: liberal constitutionalism; parliamentary government and the rule of law; Weimar Republic; Prussia

The Weimar Republic was one the most turbulent periods in German history. The collapse of the Republic was completed in July 1932 when Chancellor von Papen dismissed the Prussian government and placed Prussia under the military control of the Reich. This acting was a coup d’etat – a violation of the constitution. The case was supposed to be adjudicated by the Reich Court of Justice in Leipzig. In this trial, the government side (Schmitt, Jacobi, Bilfinger) argued that the liberal government in Prussia cannot respond effectively to the challenges posed by radical groups like communists or Nazis. Only a presidential regime could ensure domestic security and order. The liberal opponents of the Reich (Giese, Anschütz, Peters, Nawiasky, Heller) supported the political viability of liberal constitutionalism, parliamentary government and the rule of law. The author places the Leipzig trial in its historical context, and explores the institutions, law and political thought of the Weimar Republic. The story of this 1932 constitutional dispute between the Reich and Prussia might serve as a point of reference for the challenges facing constitutional democracies today, being part of the twentieth century, and yet it is remarkably relevant and a fundamental element of our present-day discussion of the rule of law and the limits set on power.

Appreciate school

Docenić szkołę

Author(s): Maria Kwiatkowska-Ratajczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish studies reform; student and teacher empowerment; innovative didactics; students’ statements

The book derives from the conviction about the unfairness of common criticism aimed at education. The author implies that appreciation of school may inspire further attempts to change the process of educating for the better. What disapprobation does is conserve long-time habits rather than promote the search for novel solutions. The researcher argues that, in the course of successive reforms, we have suffered the consequences of one-sided and thus dangerous judgements. She explores trends of changes in the most recent Polish language textbooks and juxtaposes them with the comments made as far back as in the 1990s. She presents materials originating straight from practice. She compares education in Poland to that in an international school. She describes the actions inspired by a historian, an art teacher and a business studies teacher, as well as the effects of Polish lessons and the subject called the facets of contemporary culture. Many of the proposals under examination occurred in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. The protagonists of most texts are schoolgirls and schoolboys, and their written assignments occupy the centre of attention. Not only does the methodological nitty-gritty give an insight into the educational reality, but it also facilitates decidedly more panoramic imaging and placing of the said reality against the background of historical and contemporary methodological thought. This is documented by the cited papers concerning various didactic options. The differences between them open up the sphere of freedom for school, providing teachers with the choice of concepts that appeal to them most.

Ethnically and Ntionally Motivated hate Speech in Internet Communication

Mowa nienawiści ze względu na przynależność etniczną i narodową w komunikacji internetowej

Author(s): Magdalena Jaszczyk-Grzyb / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: hate speech; Internet communication; social media; critical discourse analysis; corpus linguistics

The present monograph investigates online language production which includes hate speech (henceforth HS) motivated by the ethnic or national identity of its addressee (operationalised as ethnically and nationally motivated HS) in Polish and German Internet-based communication. The hate discourse examined in the monograph concerns four groups (Muslims, Roma, Ukrainians and Jews). To achieve this goal, a methodology combining the assumptions of critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics was developed. First a comparable corpus of ethnically and nationally motivated hate speech in Polish and German Internet communication was compiled, including public posts and comments posted on the social network Facebook. A total of 1185 posts was analysed, including several thousand comments posted from 2018–2019 and January 2020. In the course of a qualitative analysis, hateful discursive practices towards particular minority groups were identified and presented in a comparative view. This was followed by an analysis of frequency lists, keyword lists, collocations and concordanc

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: environmental humanities; environmental philosophy; urban ecology; extinction of species; refugia; ecological art

Refugia: The Survival of Urban Transspecies Communities encourages to us recognize the unexpected relations among species and to speculate about the possibility of their existence and development. It shows the need for care and support for multi-species urban communities by answering questions about the following: Which humans and non-humans may find refuge in the city? Under what conditions and to what extent? Are cities also becoming spaces of refuge for rare, endangered or endangered species and disappearing ecosystems? Can unwanted and underestimated life forms find refuge in the city, and how much compassion and hospitality do we have for them? Is it possible to be safe in the city without a place–home–shelter of one’s own? The book is the result of transdisciplinary research, including knowledge-producing artistic projects, whose research and communication methodology enable us to go beyond specialist circles. The book consists of two parts, the first of which, Refugia: The Transdisciplinary Practice of Curiosity, includes scientific texts focusing on various cases of interspecies relationships created in cities by human and non-human animals, plants, fungi, soil, architecture, etc. The second part of the book includes artistic statements in the form of visual documentation of projects created for the exhibition Refugia: Keep (Out of) These Places. The art presented here makes it possible to construct perspectives different from those generated in the field of humanities or sciences, but remaining in close contact with these fields.
