Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck…: Students’ analytical papers on intermediality

Já z hvězd svou moudrost nevyčet… : Studentský sborník intermediálních analýz

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: theory of literature; William Shakespeare; theory of intermediality; American literature; Polish literature; cinema;

The volume consists of two parts, one of which comprises analyses of filmic transmediations of Shakespeare’s sonnets (The Sonnetproject, New York Shakespeare Exchange 2013), the other analyses of literary ekphrases (by W. Szymborska, U. Fanthorpe, J. Stone etc.). It results from an Intermedial studies seminar held in 2021 within the program Literature and Intercultural Communication at Masaryk University, Brno. The contributions display various approaches that fall under two main intermedial methods, literature-centered (introduced by Werner Wolf), which focuses primarily on a semantic analysis of the original text, and literature-oriented (as suggested by Irina Rajewsky), which respects the transmediation as an autonomous representation and observes its relations to the pretext mainly retrospectively; and even a comparative one, which involves a translinguistic analysis of translations as intercultural and historical transfers.

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Technology in education; e-learning; IT methods used in teaching;

Keywords: Folk songs; Primary and Secondary schools; Music education in Czech Republic; music and folklore;

The monograph presents and reflects the results of a specific research project of the same name (MUNI/A/1423/2018) carried out by a team of academic staff and students of the doctoral program of the Department of Music at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University. The folklore song scope represents an important didactic basis, permeates music education at elementary, partly also secondary schools and specialized instrumental or singing education at elementary art schools. Due to the influence of multilayered cultural expressions and the influence of multimedia means, however, the question of how to present the musical and folklore heritage to school youth is more prominent. The object of investigation was the application of folk music to school education.

Nonprofit organizations in selected CEE countries: A journey to sustainability

Nonprofit organizations in selected CEE countries: A journey to sustainability

Author(s): Gabriela Vaceková,Mária Murray Svidroňová / Language(s): English

Keywords: Nonprofit organizations; nonprofit sector; national economy; social economy; social enterprises; private nonprofit organizations; funding; Social innovations;

Nonprofit organizations play an important and irreplaceable role in building a civil society. They are one of the main pillars of democracy and bearers of its principles, which can be used to argue the merits of their own existence and the intensive research of their field both on a theoretical and practical level. Based on an interdisciplinary methodological approach, this scientific monograph shows the role and position of nonprofit organizations in the national economy in selected Central and Eastern European countries. The data used were collected in the course of the authors’ common research, which focuses on the funding of nonprofit organizations, including self-financing and commercialization issues; financial controlling as a tool of nonprofit organizations’ financial management; and nonprofit organizations as bearers of social innovations. Based on the stage of research, we provide data analysis supporting the researched issues in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria. Individual chapters contain relevant empirical data from the authors’ own research, vividly illustrating the nonprofit sector in selected CEE countries and its never-ending journey to sustainability, while earning its position, funding, and independence. The monograph describes this journey to sustainability, while examining the challenges and opportunities for nonprofit organizations in achieving a stable marketplace and a strong position in the national economy. The authors hope that this monograph provides a sufficient methodological and theoretical basis for further research and creates a space for discussion in areas beyond the range of the issues within the monograph. It may serve as an inspiration for the theory and practice of nonprofit organizations internationally and as a basis for further scientific activities.

Author(s): Mojmír Muzikant,Roland Wagner / Language(s): German

Keywords: German language; Czech language; comparative linguistics; lexical items; valence frame; valence potential;

The present “Small Derivational Valency Dictionary of Selected Valency Carriers in German and Czech” deals with selected lexical items of German and Czech from a comparative point of view. The German part of the dictionary is dominant. The material basis of the dictionary consists of authentic examples of language use taken from two important electronic corpora of Czech and German. Each lexical item (represented by a base verb) is supplied with a valence frame providing an analyses on the level of semantic roles, selectional restrictions and morphosyntactic features. As the dictionary is derivationally organized, it presents the valence of verbal as well as of nominal valence carriers. In addition to the formal description of valence realization, each entry provides authentic illustrative examples.

Russian Literature: Encounters and Confrontations

Ruská literatura: setkání a konfrontace

Author(s): Ivo Pospíšil / Language(s): Russian

Keywords: Russian literature; concept of foreigners in Russian literature; Russian classical and modern literature; Alexander Griboyedov; Fyodor Dostoevsky; Maxim Gorky; Nikolay Leskov; Valentin Rasputin; Evgeny Vodolazkin;

This monograph contains texts covering diverse topics, including the conception of Russian literature in the works of the two founders of Slavonic studies, Slavonic literary history, Karamzin’s construction of new Russian literature, the participation of “foreigners” in the formation of Russian classical and modern literature, and the leaders of Russian classical literature such as Alexander Griboyedov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Maxim Gorky and long-neglected Nikolay Leskov. Czech views of more recent literature from the second half of the 20th century (Valentin Rasputin, Evgeny Vodolazkin) are also included, along with consideration of the participation of Russians or, more generally speaking, Eastern Slavs in interwar Czechoslovakia (Alfred Bem, Valery Vilinsky, son of Masaryk University adjunct professor Sergey Vilinsky) and the opinion of the time not quite precisely called “the period of stagnation” (in Russian “period zastoay”). Even at that time there appeared interesting discussions with axiological shifts of emphasis which have often had a crucial influence upon further developments in Russia. And then some specific features of Czech Russian literary studies (“A Small Reflection…,” Jaroslav Burian) including Wollman’s polemic with the Poles on Pan-Slavism which, in the Czech environment, has often been connected – incorrectly – only with Jan Kollár. The volume concludes with considerations on the problem of terminology applied only to Russian literature, and a treatise on the universality of Russian literature and Russian literary scholarship in connection with their reception by Czechs in the 19th–21st centuries, including various controversies. If today Czech-Russian relations are again becoming a focus of attention – most of all hot button issues of a political nature which have not been sufficiently revealed and recognised – this work stands as a modest invitation to Czech Russian studies and the deep research on the so-called Russian phenomenon in general comparative contexts and other intersections based on genre, thematic, ideological, sociological, anthropological and philosophical studies, i.e. in the framework of area concepts. And this book should also stimulate reflection on the past, which might inspire new views of the present and encourage more long-term interest than the impressionistic and emotional digressions we have seen to date. Let us take this volume as an attempt at a small contribution to such a view and understanding.

The Pre-Christian Religions of the Northern Indo-Europeans: The Traditions of the Celts, Germanic Peoples and Balts from a Critical Perspective of the Humanities

Předkřesťanská náboženství severních Indoevropanů: Tradice Keltů, Germánů a Baltů v kritické perspektivě humanitních věd

Author(s): Jan Reichstäter / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: pre-Christian religions; Celtic tribes; Germanic tribes; Baltic traditions; archeology; pantheon; idols; shrines; rituals; Old Germanic rituals; mythology; pagan relics;

The book aims to offer insights into research on the pre-Christian religions of the northern Indo-Europeans – namely the traditions of the Celtic, Germanic, and Baltic peoples. It presents the results of current research in the spheres of the pantheons, rituals and mythologies of these ethnic groups gained by those branches of the humanities that are usually involved in scientific reconstruction of archaic religions (e.g. archaeology, philology, ethnology). Significant attention is paid to the interpretational problems that have been solved by specialists in the study of these extinct religions for a long time. The book also introduces a brief history of the research in these fields, whose beginnings are mostly connected with the Romantic era, but in some regions they can be traced back as far as the period of Renaissance humanism. In this context the ideological motivations and aims which shaped – or still shape – the images of these religions, both in science and popular culture, are emphasised.

Business performance in the context of customer satisfaction, backflows, quality, innovation and knowledge

Výkonnost podniku v kontextu spokojenosti zákazníka, zpětných toků, kvality, inovací a znalostí

Author(s): Alena Klapalová,Petr Suchánek,Radoslav Škapa / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Business performance; customer satisfaction; systematisation factors; reverse flows; quality management;

The subject of this publication is the research of customer satisfaction and its connection with company performance, quality, innovation and knowledge. The main goal is to analyse the mutual relations of the above factors, including their systematisation on the basis of empirical findings in companies across industries in the Czech Republic. The publication offers a theoretical analysis of the basic relationships of the above factors and discusses them with the results of the analysis of primary data from companies. The purpose is to clarify to what extent connections assumed in the literature are reflected in the Czech environment and how much they influence the subjective and objective performance of companies. Both types of indicators were used in the construction of analytical models revealing that results based on them differ, and that models within the different indicators also differ.

Support for immigrant children’s school adaptation: Insights into Czech and Norwegian practices

Podpora školní adaptace dětí-cizinců: Náhled do české a norské praxe

Author(s): Klára Záleská / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Immigrant children; School environment for immigrant children; multi-culturality; school adaptation; equal educational opportunities;

This publication deals with the topic of adaptation of immigrant children to school, from Czech and Norwegian perspectives. The ambition of the monograph is to inspire and provide feedback to educational policymakers, teachers, and researchers, as well as to reveal in more detail the practices of one more experienced state in supporting the school adaptation of immigrant children. The author divides the text into two parts. Firstly, she looks at the topic from the theoretical perspective and in the context of existing pedagogical research. In the second part, the author presents her research survey, which looks at the topic from the perspective of three levels: state, region, and school. The survey was conceived as a qualitative comparative study based on content analysis of case studies at Czech and Norwegian primary schools. The main result is the creation of a model to support the school adaptation of immigrant children. Among other things, it points to the need to strengthen support for cooperation between the school and immigrant parents in the Czech and Norwegian environments. It also points to the regional level as a critical link mediating communication of information, knowledge, and needs between the state and school levels in the field of support for foreign children. The regional level, especially in the Czech environment, proves to be insufficiently represented in the whole process under current conditions. These and other findings prompt reflections on the importance of both so-called symbolic policy and substantive policy in the field of support for school adaptation of immigrant children, and their specific implementation in the Czech and Norwegian environments. The publication also discusses the current state of assimilation and multicultural tendencies in Czechia and Norway.

Forms of Czech Literary Reportage

Podoby české literární reportáže

Author(s): František Schildberger / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Literary studies; Milota Zdirad Polák; Josef Kajetán Tyl; Božena Němcová; Jan Neruda; literary development;

The thesis “The Ways of Czech Literary Reportage” constitutes an attempt to map the genre of reportage in Czech literature. In the introductory part of the text, the methods of literary studies – originally conceived for analysing fictional narratives – are applied to reportage texts, with the aim of establishing whether (and to what degree) the genre of reportage fits the criteria concerned. Further on, the thesis contains profiles of key figures and phenomena in the evolution of Czech-language reportage, from the 19th century antecedence of the genre to the peak of its development in the 1930s and 1940s, following through to the 1980s. The examples featured are used to illustrate both the inspirational and the constricting influences of the literary and social developments in the Czech environment on the genre of reportage. The crux of the thesis lays in its endeavour to demonstrate the manner in which the key literary figures – all considerably diverse as artistic types – reacted in their writing to both the progress and the constricted possibilities of creating reportage. The thesis emphasises the variety and diversity of creative approaches to reportage which resulted from these circumstances.

Two hemispheres – two worlds: On the relationship between brain asymmetry and trends in contemporary Western society

Dvě hemisféry – dva světy: O vztahu asymetrie mozku a trendů v současné západní společnosti

Author(s): Daniel Krchňák / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Theory of hemispheric asymetry; Iain McGilchrist; two brain hemispheres; cognition; Methodological basis of the analysis of society in terms of brain asymmetry; Western society; Western and Eastern culture; ethics; virtues;

Contemporary Western society is going through myriad dramatic changes and many people view current societal development disapprovingly. Dissatisfaction with the current state of society is widespread in the general public and also many experts point out the worsening state of our environment, increasing inequality, degradation of social capital, and the increase in mental illness. Numerous books have asked how to reverse such an unfavourable development in our society. The monograph Two hemispheres, two worlds looks at this issue through the novel lens of differences in the functioning of brain hemispheres. Research in brain hemisphere differences has made remarkable progress since overcoming the simplistic dichotomy of the rational left hemisphere and the emotional right hemisphere. Two hemispheres, two worlds reviews the most recent findings on brain asymmetry research and identifies as a common trait among all particular differences the right-hemispheric experience-affiliation and the left-hemispheric representation-affiliation. The left-hemispheric take on the world is subsequently identified as having a major influence on the modus operandi of our society and a striking parallel is shown between our current societal ills and the problems of people with a dysfunctional right-hemisphere. Finally, the author sketches specific public policies that could contribute to a more “hemispherically-balanced” society.

Typo Poster : Traditional Medium of Communication in Epoch of Advanced Digital Technologies

Author(s): Pavel Noga / Language(s): English

Keywords: Poster; Poster as a historical memento; Graphic design; Typo poster; Typefaces; Typographic poster; Image versus text;

A typeface is one of the basic tools of human communication and for a long time a poster belonged to the most widespread means of mass communication. Upon the arrival of digital technologies it seemed that a poster would gradually disappear from the print media. However, it turns out that along with still more intensive everyday use of various text displays, there is also a renaissance of a traditional typeface poster and its extinction is probably not in sight yet.

Geography of barriers: Examples of good barrier-free implementations

Geografie bariér: Příklady dobrých bezbariérových realizací

Author(s): / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: geography of barriers; disability studies; disability geography; social geography; urban digital accessibility; urban space; urban accessability; mapping of barriers; public administration;

The book Geography of Barriers: Examples of Good Barrier-free Practice offers a collection of texts that are interested in making space, services, and information accessible. Thus, the collection is primarily about barriers, their nature, localization, and possible effects. Under barriers, most people imagine material barriers for wheelchair users in the form of steps or sidewalk curbs. Only a few would think that barriers can be represented by loosely placed rugs, unfit lighting, large glass surface, a doorbell without visual output, unwanted attention, frequent asking and offering help, lack of language knowledge, pity, etc. Thus, the book broadens awareness of what can be considered a barrier. The texts are divided into three parts – theoretical, methodic, and empirical – and their arrangement follows the logic of thematic focusing from the most general to the most concrete types of barriers. While the theoretical part places the policies of accessibility into the wider context of scientific disciplines and their development – such as disability studies, disability geography or service design, the methodic part discusses the introduction of accessibility policies in the city of Brno, describing how it tried to make its space, services, and information more accessible. Finally, the empirical part offers 18 examples of relatively good barrier-free implementations that have been recently realized in Brno. This division reflects an effort to target several groups of readers. The first part thus addresses mainly students interested in accessibility issues, the second, methodic part is intended for politicians and municipalities searching for inspiration to implement their own accessibility measures and policies. The last part stating concrete examples of good barrier-free implementations is aimed at general public, at people who like to think about a whole range of topics related to accessibility of space, services, and information.
