- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:Argentine rock; national memory; Sui Generis; Luis Alberto Spinetta; Antonin Artaud
- Summary/Abstract:This paper is dedicated to Argentine rock as a source of national memory and evaluates its role in validating a collective experience shared by those generations that witnessed its emergence and development, particularly in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, which were a period of severe political instability and institutional violence. The introductory part explains the historical and cultural circumstances of the rise of Argentine rock and summarises the ideas of its most renowned representatives. It is followed by a description of a landmark Argentine rock song published in 1974, ‘Para quién canto yo entonces’, written by Charly García. The current author presents a philological translation of the lyrics from Spanish into English, as the text is a genuine summary of the main concepts and founding principles of Argentine rock. The next section outlines the profile and creation of Luis Alberto Spinetta, who was considered one of the key figures of Spanish-language rock. Subsequently, the lyrics of a song ‘Por’ from 1973 are distributed as an example of Spinetta’s revolutionary attitude towards language and poetic imagery, along with its philological English rendering made by the author of the paper. Both analysed songs retain the collective experience of Argentine listeners without losing their cultural significance over time; especially the song written by Spinetta constitutes an entirely original way of coping with adversities in turbulent times and seeking relief through sharing personal experience with the public

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to analyze the repetitions in three selected works of fiction: in the film ‘Oxygen’ (2009) by Ivan Vyrypaev; as well as in the performances ‘Wielopole, Wielopole’ by Tadeusz Kantor (1980) and ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’ by Samuel Beckett (1989, dir. Antoni Libera)). In the course of the analysis, the cognitive theory of cinema is used, in which both short-term and long-term memory play an important role. Repetition is a technique that requires the use of short-term memory. Long-term memory, in turn, makes it possible to compare works with a similar structure. It was found that repetition can have a special artistic function, both in cinema and in theatre. In the analyzed material, repetitions were present in the visual, sound, and linguistic layers of the works. This technique is often in stark contrast to the expectations of the audience. Thanks to this, such works are easier to remember, which encourages you to think about the purpose of using this artistic medium, as well as to compare works with a similar design.

- Summary/Abstract:The main issue discussed in this work is to ascertain how political events may influence the growth of the young people during adolescence in relation to the collective memory of the nation where we they grow up. The intention is to expose the subliminal message exerted by the political system on social relationships by presenting them in the form of literary fiction based on the contemporary literature. For this purpose, the perception of ethnic conflict by children, who become indirect witnesses of the events and yet become involved in ethical considerations, was checked. To analyze the problem, the work of the contemporary Bulgarian writer Zlatko Enev, Requiem for Nobody, was used, which attempts to come to terms with the ethnic conflict taking place in Bulgaria in the 1980s. For this purpose, individual case methods were used, i.e. description of the stories of adolescent children, literary analysis of the entire work and the psychological method. The studies reveal the strong influence of the nation’s collective memory on the growth of children during adolescence, as well as the influence of politics on the formation of collective memory. Children become victims of the system and victims and of historical and political messages. The interpretation of the piece suggests that the ethnic conflict between Bulgarians and Turks is still a taboo in political discourse due to the historical dependence between the two nations.

- Keywords:Polish language; Lithuania; national minority; Borderlands
- Summary/Abstract:The widespread use of the Polish language in Lithuania has its origin in the historical and cultural ties these countries share. Although geographically Poland and Lithuania are close, the official languages used there stem from different linguistic backgrounds. Moreover, due to the decreasing number of people utilizing the Polish language in Lithuania, as well as the influences of other popular languages in the area, the difficulty of maintaining the language tradition rises, posing a challenge to the nations living there. Therefore, it is incredibly crucial to cultivate not only the tradition but also the language aspects among the Polish minority abroad. The article presents a brief historical background on the union between Poland and Lithuania. It analyses and discusses statistics regarding language usage and identification with the Polish nation. The current state of the Polish language in Lithuania is examined, alongside an analysis of the differences in the Polish language used abroad due to influences and challenges posed by other languages. Furthermore, the significance of the Polish language for the Polish community is emphasised, highlighting the actions taken to promote the national language in the area. The research also summarizes the strategies for cultivating the Polish language abroad, including media, literature, educational initiatives and community organizations.

- Page Range:47-54
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:Postmemory; Eastern Borderlands; family
- Summary/Abstract:The article was devoted to the postmemory of the Eastern Borderlands on the example of one family. The paper deals with the transmission of the memory of the Eastern Borderlands between generations and its impact on the identity of one family. It analyses the way in which literature shapes and perpetuates images of the Eastern Borderlands. The work focuses on the phenomenon of collective memory as well as its individual manifestations in family life. Various aspects of cultural memory, such as mythologisation, nostalgia and trauma, are analysed in detail in the context of individuals’ personal experiences. The study also covers how the memory of the Borderlands is transmitted through family stories, images, objects and traditions. The findings point to the complexity and multidimensionality of the memory of the Eastern Borderlands, which is central to understanding individual and societal identity. The material for the study consisted of memories and experiences of the author’s family. This work contributes to the discussion on the importance of cultural memory for the formation of contemporary historical consciousness.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is dedicated to the image of Siberia as a place of Polish memory. As late as the first half of the nineteenth century, a mythologised image of this land was formed, mainly thanks to Romantic writers. I investigated how and in what forms the image of Siberia functioned in the social and cultural space during the Partitions of Poland and in the Second Polish Republic. I examined who were the actors involved in spreading knowledge about the history of Poles in exile and in commemorating these tragic events. The theoretical and methodological justification for this work is provided by the studies of Jan and Aleida Assmann, Pierre Nora, Alexander Etkind, Marcin Kula and Florian Zieliński. For a long time, cultivating the memory of Siberia in the public space was practically forbidden, at least in the Russian partition. However, former deportees, including writers and painters, considered it their duty to preserve the memory of their difficult experience in exile. Thanks to them, memoirs about Siberia were published and collected, museum collections were established, above all in Lvov, exhibitions were held and commemorative rituals were held, for example in honour of the Siberian Agathon Giller. In the interwar years, the first memorial boards were erected in Poland, as well as a memorial at the Warsaw Citadel. It is this fortress that is today the key place of memory of the exiles during the Russian Empire. The history of the memory of deportation to Siberia certainly requires more extensive research. This article merely sketches the main stages of this phenomenon

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this research is to find out to what extent the prison on Gdanska Street in Lodz, treated as a part of the history of the camp on Przemyslowa Street, is represented in the scholarly discourse. In my opinion, the problem is important, because the camp on Przemyslowa itself plays only a marginal part in the historical memory. My hypothesis is, that the reason for the above-signaled condition is not, as the many authors of the studies on the camp claim, the lack of any surviving original documentation, but the lack of a comprehensive research. On the basis of the critique of the sources from the years: 1946-2023 it was established, that the Gdanska Street prison, considered in the context of the Przemyslowa Street camp, is poorly represented in the discourse on Lodz’s prisons that funcioned in the years: 1939-1945. The analysis of the dynamics of the process of the transformation of an individual memory into the historical one, on the example of the case of the Gdanska’s one, as part of the memoirs of a former inmate of the camp, highlighted the numerous conditions, resulting, among other things, in the lack of any comprehensive research on the issue in question. The archives found indicate the validity of the hypothesis, that we are dealing with the predominance of a storage memory over an functional one, so the reasons for the Gdanska Street prison’s weak presence in the historical memory should not be seen in the lack of any surviving documentation, but in the lack of the proper research. Due to the inverse proportional size of the article and the issues raised I believe, that the research performed should be treated as contributory. The indisputable value of the study is the presence in the scientific discourse of any archival materials, the existence of which has, so far, only been hinted at in the literature.

- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:Holocaust; Tulli; remembrance; postmemory; trauma
- Summary/Abstract:The topic of the Holocaust and its representation is particularly important in contemporary literary and cultural discourse. The theme of my work is Holocaust remembrance as reflected in the prose of Magdalena Tulli. The main research objectives were to draw attention to the importance of literature, which often becomes a medium of memory, but also to focus on the theme of the Holocaust as a personal and intimate experience, which, especially in the case of Tulli’s prose, may be related not only to history and politics but above all to inter-generational trauma. The main character of the Italian Stilettos and Noise belongs to the post-memory generation – thus the camp experiences are not limited only to the narrative of survivors but they become the core component of trauma transmitted across generations. The girl’s mother passes on to her daughter the whole emotional baggage she cannot cope with on her own, and the girl becomes painfully aware that the price for trying to escape from the past is the distance which separates her from her mother. The main research method was the analysis of Magdalena Tulli’s novels from the perspective of Holocaust remembrance, trauma and family relations as well as in the light of literary criticism, which brings in an important theoretical element. The most important conclusion of the research, and also the subject of this work, is the observation that memory and (non)memory of the Holocaust in Tulli’s work concern first of all human drama and events of an individual nature; as a result we are left with the impression that history perceived as a general experience should never be allowed to overshadow subjectivity.

- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:Krzysztof Warlikowski; memory; trauma; affect; staging
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to examine how Krzysztof Warlikowski explores the themes of memory, difficult experiences, trauma and affects in his theatrical productions. An analysis of his directorial strategies is also conducted - how these issues are presented and whether they can impact the audience. Drawing on research into the visuality of Ernst van Alphen and post-memory in the approach of Marianne Hirsch, the text illustrates how theater can be utilized to convey and explore themes related to the Holocaust, memory, and post-memory. The analysis of plays such as "Odyssey. A Story for Hollywood", "Elizabeth Costello" or "(A)pollonia" also includes a discussion of theatrical techniques and methods helpful in influencing the audience’s awareness and encouraging reflection on traumatic experiences. Warlikowski, by creating a collage of micro and macro histories, an archive of human experiences and desires, tests various narrative approaches, tries different forms and discourses, multiplying perspectives of characters entangled in numerous fears and affects. He raises questions about the role of sacrifice, selflessness, and unconditional love and suffering. In this way, the article sheds light on the role of theater as a space for shaping historical sensitivity and awareness, and allows for further research into memory and post-memory in audio-visual arts.

- Keywords:identity; exile; memory; homeland
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this work is to analyze the role of memory of the homeland, mother tongue and one’s origins in shaping identity on exile using on the basis of the novel ‘Catch the Rabbit’ by the post-Yugoslav writer Lana Bastašić. The analysis also involves elements of the writer’s biography that refer to the issue of the indeterminacy of identity and memory of native culture, as well as the concept of contemporary patriotism, the understanding of which has changed significantly in recent years. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the role of Yugoslavia in shaping the post-Yugoslav emigrant identity, which in the novel represents an imaginary world of the past, living primarily in memories and war trauma. The research methods used in the study of this issue are the analysis of intertextual references to other cultural texts and the method of logical construction. The author also used hermeneutics methods. The research shows that regardless of the personal fate of an individual and their current place of residence, the country of origin and the values acquired from the family home will always be the primary source of identity shaping their further life. The foreign culture of the country of emigration, however, has a secondary effect which, although it shapes new behaviors, ultimately does not influence the remodeling of the cultural, sociological and psychological structure of a person.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article I am examining a subject matter of universality of the topic of memory in literary production. I am answering the question why the above-mentioned complex issue is discussed so frequently in a large number of works. Using the analysis approach, I am presenting in which contexts the process of commemorating is commonly debated in the literary works of various writers. Due to the comparative method, I am showing different ways of presenting a term of memory in literature. In the result of examination I am noticing that the aforementioned problem is common issue during the discussing mainly historical, nationwide, psychological and faith content. Apart from this, it can be conclued – the memory has got special connections with patriotism and human emotionalism. Its fight with unavoidably passing time is incessantly noticed. In my article I used examples from Polish, Russian and other literature. Citations from many known literary works were aimed at presenting a full range of associations with the aforementioned concept of “memory”. Because of changing specificity of our times, in the article I carried out a study about the most popular categories of presenting a motif of memory among artists from various parts of the world. The open question is how common technology and digitization will impact on transformation of illustrating of the mentioned problem of memory at a future date.

- Summary/Abstract:In this text I’m analysing poems of Polish and Russian authors connected with the Horatian motif exegi monumentum. I check how the authors use it and how it becomes a means of expressing the human desire of memory. For this purpose I use poems by Julian Tuwim as well as Ivan Bunin. Despite the different views on creativity, different emotionality, one can notice similarities in the basis of the use of this idea. It became a source and a means for poets to express their own doubts and hopes related to the future of poetry, as well as the memory of authors.

- Author(s):Julia Kożuchowska
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Theory of Literature
- Page Range:127-133
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:memory; ethics of memory; Lolita; morality
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the paper is to analyze the ethics of memory and the memory of women in Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita. The research used the memory theories of Jerzy Kałążny and Brigit Neumann and the tools of philological hermeneutics. Memory is the subject of interdisciplinary research, with each branch of science examining this category in its own specific way. In literary studies itself, there are three approaches related to memory: literary memory, memory in literature and literature as a medium of memory. Identity, closely related to ethics and memory, is also a significant problem. Lolita was written in the form of a diary in which Humbert Humbert contains his memories of his life and relationships with women. An important role is played by the form of the work, the first-person narrative and direct addresses to the recipient, which make it difficult to resist the temptation to look more favorably at Humbert, who presents himself as a victim of his own actions. The lack of ethical and moral values represented by this hero is evidenced by the detailed and poetic way of describing little girls – nymphets, who catch Humbert in their traps and arouse desire. What is also disturbing is that adult women cause the narrator to feel disgust, aggression and thoughts of committing murder. Humbert Humbert’s attitude is condemnable, and the hero himself does not deserve any mercy.

- Subject(s):Theory of Literature
- Page Range:135-142
- No. of Pages:8
- Keywords:censorship; comparison; corruption; feminism; global issues; literaturę; Nikolai Gogol
- Summary/Abstract:This comparative exploration delves into the world depicted in Nikolai Gogol’s letters and its resonance with contemporary society. Gogol, renowned for his literary works such as "Dead Souls" and "The Government Inspector," offers profound insights into the social fabric of 19th-century Russia through his correspondence. The methodology employed in this essay involves juxtaposing themes from Gogol’s letters, including social inequality, bureaucratic corruption, censorship, and moral dilemmas, with contemporary global issues. Gogol’s observations on the rigid social hierarchy, prevalent corruption, and moral decay of his time find striking parallels in today’s world, marked by persistent wealth inequality, bureaucratic inefficiency, and moral dilemmas arising from consumerism and digitalization. The essay also examines Gogol’s views on women, exploring his subtle yet potentially feminist sentiments expressed in his letters to Alexandra Smirnova. While Gogol’s perspective may be rooted in 19th-century norms, it provides a lens through which to analyze and critique contemporary gender dynamics and feminist movements. By reflecting on Gogol’s critiques and their relevance to modern society, this essay elucidates the enduring challenges facing humanity and underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to foster social justice and ethical integrity.

- Summary/Abstract:In the digital age, new media have revolutionized the way we create, store and share memory. This article examines the impact of the Internet and digital technologies on the storage of shared experiences, analyzing how digital tools are transforming traditional notions of collective memory. The study focuses on three key aspects: the digitization of personal and social memory, the role of social media platforms as contemporary archives, and the challenges to the permanence and reliability of digital records. It is noteworthy that today new media not only facilitate the widespread documentation and sharing of experiences, but also introduce new dynamics into the formation of social and individual identities through the ability to edit, delete and selectively share content. At the same time, the instability of digital formats and privacy issues challenge the permanence and authenticity of stored memories. The article concludes that new media are transforming collective memory in ways that require new theoretical and methodological frameworks for its study, underscoring the need for further research in this rapidly evolving field.

- Keywords:Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; fondness; cinematography; Kirill Serebrennikov; Leto
- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on the fondness present in Russian popular culture for the period of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The author references articles by other writers who analyze its presence in literature and describe the general state of Russian cinematography after 1991. The author concludes that the sentiment towards the socialist period is indeed a desired phenomenon, and the reckoning with the previous regime is rejected by both the public and the establishment. The author refers to myths highlighted by A. Kustarev – those criticizing the USSR era – and countermiths that glorify it. In relation to the latter, the author analyzes the movie Leto, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, a Russian theater and film director, long-time director of the Gogol Center. According to the author, one can identify clear traces of rehabilitating the Soviet period present in this work, based on the story of two Leningrad bands (Zoopark and Kino). The film portrays the reality of 1981 as attractive, culturally vibrant, politically stable, and filled with goodwill. Any elements that might indicate the shortcomings or inconveniences of life in the USSR are pushed to the background or countered in dialogues. The use of these countermiths was likely not a deliberate move by Kirill Serebrennikov, a critic of the contemporary Russian government and the previous system. The fact that they appear in his film, however, may suggest a high level of their internalization by Russian society.
