Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze the repetitions in three selected works of fiction: in the film ‘Oxygen’ (2009) by Ivan Vyrypaev; as well as in the performances ‘Wielopole, Wielopole’ by Tadeusz Kantor (1980) and ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’ by Samuel Beckett (1989, dir. Antoni Libera)). In the course of the analysis, the cognitive theory of cinema is used, in which both short-term and long-term memory play an important role. Repetition is a technique that requires the use of short-term memory. Long-term memory, in turn, makes it possible to compare works with a similar structure. It was found that repetition can have a special artistic function, both in cinema and in theatre. In the analyzed material, repetitions were present in the visual, sound, and linguistic layers of the works. This technique is often in stark contrast to the expectations of the audience. Thanks to this, such works are easier to remember, which encourages you to think about the purpose of using this artistic medium, as well as to compare works with a similar design.
