Summary/Abstract: This comparative exploration delves into the world depicted in Nikolai Gogol’s letters and its resonance with contemporary society. Gogol, renowned for his literary works such as "Dead Souls" and "The Government Inspector," offers profound insights into the social fabric of 19th-century Russia through his correspondence. The methodology employed in this essay involves juxtaposing themes from Gogol’s letters, including social inequality, bureaucratic corruption, censorship, and moral dilemmas, with contemporary global issues. Gogol’s observations on the rigid social hierarchy, prevalent corruption, and moral decay of his time find striking parallels in today’s world, marked by persistent wealth inequality, bureaucratic inefficiency, and moral dilemmas arising from consumerism and digitalization. The essay also examines Gogol’s views on women, exploring his subtle yet potentially feminist sentiments expressed in his letters to Alexandra Smirnova. While Gogol’s perspective may be rooted in 19th-century norms, it provides a lens through which to analyze and critique contemporary gender dynamics and feminist movements. By reflecting on Gogol’s critiques and their relevance to modern society, this essay elucidates the enduring challenges facing humanity and underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to foster social justice and ethical integrity.
