Summary/Abstract: The Slovak towns of Pezinok (lat. Bazinium) and Svätý Jur (lat. Sanctus Georgius), located at the foot of the Little Carpathians in western Slovakia, were in the past characterized by intensive viticultural activity. Both were granted, together with the city of Modra, the privileges of royal free cities. In the work of the Jesuit historian 18th century Samuel Timon Celebriorum Hungariae urbium et oppidorum topographia (Tyrnaviae: 1702) one can find a brief description of both places. Twenty years later, Timon’s work was completed by Gabriel Szerdahely, a member of the Society of Jesus, and published under the title Celebriorum Hungariae urbium et oppidorum chorographia (Cassoviae: 1722). Both Latin works were primarily intended for the needs of teaching geography in grammar Jesuit schools.
