Summary/Abstract: One of the biggest threats to the viability of intangible cultural heritage is posed by the declining numbers of the practitioners of traditional craftsmanship and of those who are in the position to learn from them. In Sibiu County, the furrier craftsmanship is in greater danger than other traditional craftsmanships: only a few men and women still know the secrets of this art and one of them is Ioan Barac from Alămor. At 73 years old, he is the only active furrier of his village: he embroiders sheepskin sleeveless waistcoats following the tecniques and motifs learnt from his parents and grandparents. Thus, his sheepskin sleeveless waistcoats have both utilitarian and artistic functions.
