Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to address the problem of teaching vocabulary, which has a specific cultural background, such as phraseology. Given the fact that one of the main means of improving communicative competence is by teaching vocabulary which is used in unofficial, colloquial situations, it is worth studying the question of how transparent phraseology is in syllabuses of Polish as a foreign language and how to estimate the minimum phraseological competence necessary for effective communication.
