Aspects of Wood Sculptural Art in Kosovë

Summary/Abstract: The artistic woodcarving of our folk masters is centuries old. The Kosov region, among others, is particularly renowned for its popular traditions. We followed these traditions during an ethnographic expedition in 1978, and we compared them with other expeditions made during this decade in Kelmend and Dukagjine, and in the Malessie of Gjakove (Tropoje and Has de Kukës)*. We also made, at the same time, the collation with the data from the archives and those from the scientific literature. In our article we will try to highlight some particular aspects of the Kosovan art of woodcarving, without pretending to exhaust this subject. The master worked various objects on wood for his daily needs, objects of practical value. They are sometimes very simple by the ornaments, elsewhere worked with care and finesse of an invoice, which provides aesthetic satisfaction when you look at them; panois we find objects worked with a coarse invoice, and this because of the incapacity of the sculptors, or of the function that the object assumes.
