Summary/Abstract: After the first world war, the people in Mures villages, awakened to life. Longing for the spring of wisdom for ages, they had to be given as many books as possible. According to this principle, the Church and ASTRA guided their cultural activity. Being aware of the villagersř cultural level, these two institutions tried to open their cultural horrizon through appropriate readings. Practically people in the country had to be taught to read and what to read. Libraries, containing easy readables, were founded in almost every village. Religious press (newspapers, magazines, calendars) was an important part of these libraries. Through it people received not only information but also moral education.
