Summary/Abstract: The inter-war press intensely debated the problem of reading among peasants. Some thought peasants simply didnřt like reading, while others considered that the phenomenon of illiteracy was caused by the lack of so called Ŗpopular booksŗ. Another problem was that many books were written in a too high level of language for the peasants to understand. Thatřs why the calendars fought constantly to offer people in the country a large variety of reading materials, appropriate for their cultural level. Stories were the most popular and two of the writers who published stories in calendars were: Ion Agârbiceanu and Alexandru Lupuleanu Melin.
