Summary/Abstract: The functions of the chorus of Christmas carols are examined on the basis of different examples. The role of the chorus in the co-ordination of the two plans of the rite is paid special attention - the plan of the ideas, which carols comprise and express, and that of the actual ritual, in whose conditions they are performed. This co-ordination is realized by means of the mythopoetic rite speech, through the designation of the rite chronotopos and the participants in the ritual. With its actualizing reiteration the chorus emerges as the most active element, whose function is to organize the ritual’s elements as a system, identical with the sacred model.
