Summary/Abstract: „Aflând de faptul că Poarta a înaintat regelui Ludovic al XV-lea cererea ca monarhul să medieze pacea între turci şi' imperiali~. prin ambasadorul său la Constantinopol, Villeneuve, obligându-se să determine şi Rusia a apela la intervenţia diplomatică a Franţei, contele Ostermann a solicitat lui Rondeau să urgenteze trimiterea unui mesager către ambasadorul Fawkener spre a-l informa despre poziţia Rusiei; Rondeau a acceptat cu condiţia ca şi rezidentul olandez de la St. Petersburg, Swart, să facă acelaşi lucru expediind un mesaj similar ambasadorului Calkoen la Poarta. In urma acordului diplomatului olandez de la curtea ţarinei de a 'proceda astfel, Rondeau a hotărât să-şi trimită secretarul, pe dr. John Bell , în misiune la Constantinopol, cu scrisori către Fawkener şi Calkoen. La 6/17 decembrie Bell lua drumul spre capitala Imperiului otoman , trecând prin Moldova, unde s-a întâlnit cu domnul Grigore al Il-lea”[…] Upon getting aware of France's attempts to mediate the peace between the Turks and their adversaries, the Russian authorities requested that the English Embassy in Saukt PetersbUrg send a messenger to the Ottoman Porte in order to settle the issue of the English-Dutch mediatioD. This mission was devolved u:pon Dr. John Bell, secretary at the Embassy, who left Saukt Petersburg on 6/ 17 December 1737, crossed Moldavia, where he enjoyed a warmwelcome by Prince Grigore II Gbika, and, after a making detourin Bender, reached his destination on 28 Januaryl 8 February 1738. The efIorts of ambassadors Fawkener and Calkoen to clarify tbe position of tbe Porte'S officials were checked ofI by the duplicitary policy of Grand Vezir Yagen Pasha, who concelead his preference of the French peace' mediation by Marquis of 'lilleneuve over the EnglishDutch. Disheartened by the failure ofhis exploratory mission, Bell retumed to Russia on
