Summary/Abstract: The text analyzes the connection between transformations in reading practices and the rise of populist anger in the public sphere. Based on sociological and literary studies, the author shows how the decline of deep reading coincides with the spread of fragmentary, pragmatic “broad reading,” which fuels self-indulgence without critical competence. Journalistic texts rely not on argumentation but on rhetorical abundance and affective insinuations aimed at mobilizing anger and creating angry identities. Thus, some vague idea of authenticity replaces factual accuracy. At the same time, nihilism towards facts undermines democratic publicity.
