Summary/Abstract: The category of “practical reflexivity” is being constructed in order to shift the problem of reflexivity toward an ethical rather than a purely cognitive perspective. The need for such a shift is demonstrated on two levels: that of argumentation and the present-day level of institutionalization of social sciences. In brief, in the late 20th century “reflexivity” has been used in the social sciences to criticize the opposition between theory and practice and thus to cancel the idealization of the pureness of scientific propositions. They cannot be pure, as they have certain social preconditions and effects, on which we must reflect. But this implies that the reflection itself has certain social preconditions and effects, that we have to reflect on in turn, etc., etc. The way out of this infinity is to shift the perspective of viewing reflexivity and to redefine it in practical terms as taking responsibility for action. Thus we can think of it as an integrative mechanism of social practices.
