The Slow Time of Theoretical Reason

Summary/Abstract: It would not be exaggerated to say that theoretical reason is a customary target of every social-critical and deconstructive strategy. It has been blamed for hiding its origin in power and effects on power behind claims to universality. But what we as social beings are now witnessing, after the successful deconstruction of some of the major dispositifs of power served by theoretical reason, is yet another power dispositif, served by what can be called the reason of urgency, rather than greater freedom. This situation indicates a positive direction for the critique of theoretical reason: critique should work for the exercise rather than the canceling of theoretical reason. The article is an elaborated version of a paper presented at the conference on Pierre Bourdieu and the Critique of Theoretical Reason.
