Summary/Abstract: Some perspectives on the role of christian education in the development of human autonomy and spirituality. The importance of establishing a secure and stable moral identity for achieving autonomy of belief lies largely in learning the nature and value of personal commitments and how such commitments can be made. Before a Christian can autonomously reflect on his own conception of the good, he must “learn what it is like to have a conception of the good in the first place.” Those who are concerned with assessing these value structures distinguish here four identity statuses “depending on the presence or absence of a period of decision-making crisis) and the degree of personal commitment in two areas: occupation and ideology.”
