Summary/Abstract: In recent years the work of the Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis has been increasingly drawing the attention of Bulgarian readers considering the surge in reissues of his books reflecting a reciprocal interest from contemporary translators. Despite this fact in-depth examples of literary research on Kazantzakis are quite hard to find in Bulgaria. Regardless of their diversity the articles shed a fragmentary light on the author’s fictional and philosophical texts, which uncover his visions of the world and of the human condition. A fraction of these analyses, which can be found in the media, develop an unclear and vague representation of the artist’s person and ideas; they have the tendency to simplify the messages of the Cretan, turning them into lifestyle – maxims in the media. This present text is focused solely on the novel “Alexis Zorbas”. With each rereading of this work one can be encouraged to deepen one’s interpretation of the already acquired ideas within the text and to establish new ways of thinking about the Cretan author’s opera. This analysis attempts to decipher the intricate relationships between the main characters of the novel. A main accent of the current text is the feeling of existential jolts and metaphysical transformation. In a sense the central theme is the concept of an existence in crisis which leads to a sobering up from excessive bookish loneliness.
