Summary/Abstract: The 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea has become an occasion for many ecumenical initiatives. It is being celebrated especially strongly within major ecumenical organizations such as the World Council of Churches. The celebration is firmly embedded in the study program culminating in the 2010 publication of a revised version of the document “Confessing the One Faith. An Ecumenical Explication of the Apostolic Faith”. The document recorded many years of interdenominational and ecumenical reflection by the World Council of Churches’ Faith and Order Commission on the significance of ancient symbols of faith, especially the Nicaean-Constantinopolitan Creed for today’s Christianity, experiencing denominational and confessional differences and confronted with the cultural, social and epistemic challenges of the contemporary world. The article is a presentation of the agreement on a common confession of faith, made especially in the perspective of the current problems of the ecumenical movement, and emphasizing the Commission’s singled out challenges facing the Church. It aims to demonstrate that the Nicaean-Constantinopolitan Creed provides a strong foundation on which the ecumenical quest for the visible unity of the Church rests, especially in contrast to the growing inter-denominational differences in moral teaching. Analysis of the documents and literature in question is the main method used in the article.
