Summary/Abstract: The category of definiteness in the Bulgarian language is a significant grammatical phenomenon that continues to be the subject of debate among Bulgarian scholars. Despite numerous linguistic studies on the issue, difficulties in mastering this category are also experienced by foreign learners, which emphasizes the need for a better understanding and explanation of the process of articulation. The present study aims to present a brief comparative analysis of the category of definiteness/indefiniteness in Bulgarian, English, Turkish and Arabic, as well as to examine the main errors that foreigners make when using the definite article in Bulgarian. By analyzing sample sentences composed by native speakers of different languages, the main errors in the use of the definite article are identified. The study shows that differences in the perception of definiteness or indefiniteness in specific situations are the main cause of these errors, including when articulating feminine and neuter words. For the purposes of the study, a synchronous method, content analysis and comparative analysis were used, which allow for an in-depth examination of the difficulties in learning the Bulgarian language. The results emphasize that the presence of the category of definiteness in a given language is not a guarantee for its successful mastery in another language, which requires additional attention to the theoretical foundations of teaching Bulgarian as a foreing language.
