PUNCTUATION IN THE WRITINGS OF ALGERIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: ERRORS,ORIGINS, AND REMEDIATION STRATEGIES

Summary/Abstract: Focusing on punctuation errors in the writings of Algerian university students, this study aims to identify the categories of errors, their origins and to propose a remediation strategy. Omission, confusion, new presence, repetition, juxtaposition and intrusion are the errors identified, after the analysis of the 50 dissertations collected. The frequency of these errors depends on the writing skills of the students, whose limited punctuation skills are justified by the current teaching programs and methods.
