Summary/Abstract: In the present paper, I endeavoured to reveal some main reasons for the development of the Bulgarian folk song in its initial stage. The research of many of our eminent ethnomusicologists emphasizes that the origin of the song starts from the so-called “oplakvalki” that are performed during (sadly) sorrowful rituals. They do not have specific lyrics and melody. At the moment when the person, who laments over someone or something, simply says one word after another, “woven” into quite a primitive trait of melody. At these very moments emergesthe beginning of improvisation, which becomes over time a main factor for the development of the Bulgarian folk song. Hence, a specific melody comes into being that has very limited tonal volume second or third. In its development, the Bulgarian folk song undergoes many changes with regard to tonal volume, ornamentation, melodics, modal and metro-rhythmic diversity. This is also my main objective underlying the present paper - how the Bulgarian folk song evolves and how, it changes its melodic structure.
