Summary/Abstract: As the contemporary international relations are characterised by a return to power politics and spheres of in fluence, the developing countries and the new economic powers are cooperating under the label of Global South and they tend to oppose the West (made up by the USA, Canada, the EU states, UK) at the level of ideology, values and economic interests. People’s Republic of China and Russia, the main revisionist actors in the world system, associated themselves with the main regional powers of the Global South, under the umbrella of BRICS. The author of this study explains why, in spite of the West’s anxieties over the possible evolution of BRICS into a political and military entity, the likelihood of such a transformation is a small one, taking into account the disputes existing among some BRICS member states (India vs China - a long-standing border conflict etc.) and the USAs pressures on some members to avoid playing into the aggressive actions of Moscow and Beijing.
