Summary/Abstract: This study is intended to demonstrate the impact of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine on the national security of NATO’s member states and the way they perceive their future relations with Moscow. It also searches to explain the main roots of Moscow’s aggressive behaviour towards the West and its smaller neighbours. By forcibly and illegally changing the borders of sovereign countries and denying their right to choose their membership in international institutions (NATO, EU etc), Russia acted as a de facto imperial power. Indeed, the war in Ukraine is a kind of recolonisation campaign, and the Russian leadership wants to re-establish former borders according to ethnic and historical criteria. Some psycho-cognitive elements may also explain Vladimir Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine. The international community must react to this illegal attempt to abolish the sovereignty of some countries and change their borders by using the force.
