Summary/Abstract: A small country of 2.1 million inhabitants, Slovenia is at the crossroads of Central and Western Europe. A bridge country between the European Union and the Western Balkans since its accession to the European Union in 2004, Slovenia is seen as a good student of the transition and a model country for all other Eastern European states, particularly the candidate countries for European integration. However, its model of transition from communism to capitalism is that of gradualism, with slower reforms whose consequences have been assessed in order to preserve the social achievements of the past. The article discusses the path taken since accession to the European Union and the successive crises that Slovenia has had to face.
