The Saints Brothers of Thessaloniki and their legacy in Slovak spiritual culture: tradition, adaptation, diversity

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Slovak spiritual culture. The influence of the life achievements of the Brothers from Thessaloniki on the Slovak tradition and on cultural diversity and openness is demonstrated. The research assumed that the translation of the Holy Bible into the national language is considered the most important manifestation of the maturity and advancement of the national language. In this way, the oldest Slavic literary language – Old Slavonic – became a language that in the Western world of the time reached the level of the cultural language of Europe, next to Latin and Greek. The aim of the article is to formulate a contribution to research on the transformations and contexts of cultural identity in the enclave and diaspora, on the example of Slovaks and Ruthenians. The article uses the example of the Slovak linguistic and cultural environment to explain the cultural and linguistic issues of the relationship between community and linguistic identity in the national and wider Slavic context. The diversity of Slovak confessionalism includes the continuity of the Christian linguistic thought of the Slovaks, and thus the continuity of the spiritual heritage of the Cyril-Methodian tradition and culture. This is due to the fact that by introducing the Slavic language into the church practices, next to Latin and Greek, the Slavs and Slovaks more easily adapted to the cultural mentality of the Latin- or Greek-speaking elites. The culture of the Slavs was also influenced by the Byzantine culture. The Byzantine-Slavic spiritual, literary and liturgical tradition was and still is closely related to the Western cultural and confessional tradition.
