Summary/Abstract: This article stands for the assumption that global civil society could easily be envisaged as the ultimate expression of a functional paradox. A direct consequence deriving from globalization, global civil society comes into being in the shape of all transnational civic associations, international social activists and any other presumptive association which calls for peace; and in the absence of any Leviathan it finds its much needed equilibrium in threats and risks, in the same fashion Hobbes’ citizens abandoned the state of nature for fear the "war of all against all". However, global civil society endures an unhappy ambiguity, by and large due to the absence of any master theory. Hence, in the following article we are challenging global civil society, as a concept, looking forward to revealing its nature, its genesis and eventually its means of action and control.
