Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is a demonstration of the main assumptions of constructivism as a pedagogical theory in foreign language teaching, and its reflection in the active process of learning. The cognitive model and its opposite, the objective model, are discussed. The principles of teaching according to the constructivist approach and the role of the teacher and the student in the process of teaching and learning are analysed. The authors refer to CLIL (Contended Language Integrated Learning) and its role in the constructivist approach. The role of this approach in educational practice with the application of information technology is emphasised.
