Slovenačko pitanje

Author(s): Milan Ćurčin / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 05/1922

Evolution and competition of the myths of origin: Bulgarian and Balkan aspects

Author(s): Nikolay Aretov / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2017

The paper argues that historic myths and myths of origin, being an essential part of national mythology, are neither the first to emerge nor the only one. Furthermore, as a general rule, there are often several variations of the narration about the past of a nation that are evolving and compete for the dominant position. In an attempt to evade the polemics the author analyses some Bulgarian aspects of the crucial problem about the evolution and competition among these variations of national mythology comparing them with analogical Balkan phenomena. In all these countries there are mythical narrations about the ancient times, about Christian Middle Ages and Byzantium, about the struggle for an independent state, etc. They were arguing for primacy in the beginning; later some ideologists of the nation managed to build one relatively stable synthesis.

Константин Философ Костенечки и „ересите“ в Сърбия по времето на деспот Стефан Лазаревич

Author(s): Stanoje Bojanin / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 57-58/2018

This study deals with Chapter 29 of Constantine Kostenečki’s Treaties on the Letters, which contains a list of “heresies” – several customs and beliefs from the daily life of clergy and laymen – in Serbia around 1400. This chapter still remains fairly cryptic and unexplained, having received little reflection from scholars who have been focused primarily on Constantine’s concepts of orthography and grammar. In this treatise, characterized as “theoretical peroration” (Goldblatt), detailed and explanatory descriptions give way to moralistic lectures and criticism, replete with scriptural citations and commonplace remarks. The contents of the 29th chapter can be understood in terms of social life’s conceptual diversity, which includes dietary habits, segmentation of time, veneration of particular customs and individuals, kinship ties, and aspects of church rituals. These concepts could be mapped onto dichotomies of high/low, official/unofficial, central/local, clerical/lay culture (J. Le Goff, J.-C. Schmitt, Peter Burke), but in many cases they do not overlap with the social strata and classes in the feudal society. Constantine criticizes customs and beliefs that are, more or less, shared by many in the parish and the diocese, from priests and lower clerics to laymen. These cultural models replace the official church practice in the social and religious lives of Belgrade clergy and their flocks—a tendency that Constantine ardently opposes.

Enlightenment and Nation-Defence Profile of Ján Čaplovič

Enlightenment and Nation-Defence Profile of Ján Čaplovič

Author(s): Marcela Gbúrová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Ján Čaplovič (1780 - 1847) was one of the major figures of the Slovak national-revivalist generation, in large part due to the role he played in bridging the professional and language gaps during the reform course of the rulers of the Austrian monarchy, and the struggle of the Hungarian nobility for Hungarian independence in the late 18th and early 19th centuries due to the search for soft but effective forms of nation-defence activities. This study presents the enlightenment and nation-defence profile of the Slovak patriot Ján Čaplovič who has received minimal attention from the Slovak academic community after 1990s. Although he is not considered a prominent national revivalist, his publishing devoted to ethnographic and national defence issues significantly contributed to Slovaks taking their stance in the multinational Austrian monarchy, in strengthening their ethnic identity, and in fostering the process of codification of their literary language as the most important national identification sign in 1843. The study is divided into three relatively separate but interrelated sections. The first part outlines his enlightenment profile, with special attention paid to its most important component, which was used in his ethnographic and patriotic works. The second part profiles the Slovak national defences of the first four decades of the 19th century of authors such as Pavol Senický, Juraj Rohonyi, Samuel Hoič, Matej Šuhajda, Ján Chalupka, Jozef Meltzer, Ondrej Soltys, Ľudovít Štúr, Ján Francisci, and Michal Miloslav Hodža. Their defences played an important role in supporting active political forms of enforcing the ethnic-emancipatory demands of the representatives of the Slovak nation-forming elite for a more democratic settlement of the contemporaneous conditions in the monarchy, especially in historic Hungary. The last part analyses in detail the national defences of Ján Čaplovič and evaluates their expressive value.

THE CHURCHES “SFÂNTUL PANTELIMON” IN GALAȚI AND “SFÂNTUL PROOROC ILIE” IN BUCHAREST IN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE BULGARIAN AND THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCHES

Author(s): Spaska Shumanova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

During the Period of Socialism (1944 – 1989) between the Bulgarian and Romanian Orthodox Churches, two key issues were to be resolved: the establishment of the legal status of Bulgarian Church “Sfântul Pantelimon” in Galați and the provision (until construction) of a church for the Bulgarian community in Bucharest, after the confiscation of the Bulgarian School building and the “St. st. Cyril and Methodius” Church as a result of the new Law on Cults adopted in 1948 by the Romanian state. Finding solutions to these questions depends on the ongoing domestic and foreign political changes in Bulgaria and Romania, which have a direct impact on the relations between the Orthodox Churches. Despite numerous meetings and conversations, both at church and state level, the “Sfântul Pantelimon” Church was taken away from the Bulgarian community and Bulgarian orthodox church, and “Sfântul Prooroc Ilie” Church provided for the temporary use of the Bulgarian inhabitants in Bucharest was also taken away in 2009. In this way, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is left without its representative church in Romania, and the Bulgarians in Romanian capital without their own house of prayer.

Борба за освобождение на българите в Македония и Одринска Тракия. Създаване на Вътрешната македоно-одринска революционна организация – ВМОРО

Author(s): Petar Yordanov Nenkov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

On October 23, 1893, the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization was established in Thessaloniki. It was a national liberation organization of the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire. The organization is active in the Thessaloniki, Bitola, Skopje, Adrianople and Constantinople vilayet. Its programming documents state that it will fight in a revolutionary way to implement Article 23 of the Berlin Treaty, to grant political autonomy to Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace. It is envisaged that the two neighboring areas will be separated into an independent territorial unit within the empire, and administrative and political reforms should be carried out in it with a view to improving the living conditions of the Christian population there. During the wars of national unification the battalions of VMORO joined the Bulgarian Army. They actively support its actions, their goal being the conquest of as much of Macedonia and Thrace as possible and their eventual accession to the Kingdom of Bulgaria.

12th Congress of The International Society for Ethnology And Folklore Zagreb, 21—25 June 2015

12th Congress of The International Society for Ethnology And Folklore Zagreb, 21—25 June 2015

Author(s): Marija Dumnić / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2015

The International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (Société internationale d’ethnologie et de folklore — SIEF) is a professional organisation that assembles ethnologists, anthropologists, folklorists, ethnomusicologists, linguists, sociologists and others. The Society held its 12th Congress in Croatia in June 2015 with the theme Utopias, Realities, Heritages: Ethnographies for the 21St Century, assisted by local organizers, the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences of the University of Zagreb, and the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb. Although one of the largest humanities conferences in the region, it attracted many scholars from other parts of the world, who offered contributions on various topics related to the conference theme: archives, body/embodiment, digital/virtual, disciplinary discussions, food, gender and sexuality, heritage, home, migration/borders, museums, narrative, politics and social movements, religion, rural, socialist, post-socialist and urban studies, including music. Thus, it is understandable that throughout the conference there were continuous sessions showing ethnographic films, since they, as a medium, potentially encompass all humanities and social sciences.

“Spiritual Armour”: Crafting Ukrainian Identity through Vyshyvanka

“Spiritual Armour”: Crafting Ukrainian Identity through Vyshyvanka

Author(s): Winter Greet / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The brightly coloured and delicately detailed “vyshyvanka”, the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt, has long been a marker of Ukrainian ethnic and cultural identity. In recent years in particular, the vyshyvanka has become an internationally recognized symbol of “Ukrainianness”; and yet despite its importance in Ukrainian identity-building and independence movements, remarkably little scholarship exists on this topic. This lack of academic engagement stems in part from twin forms of domination – colonial domination and gendered domination. Ukrainian history has often been overshadowed by Russo-centrism, while the significance of handicrafts practices such as embroidery has been dismissed because of their association with femininity and “women’s work”. Yet the sheer number of digital images of vyshyvanka and the proliferation of vyshyvanka-related designs in light of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, make this a topic worthy of our attention. In this article, I explore how and why the uses of vyshyvanka have evolved over time, charting differences in how the vyshyvanka has been depicted, and used, both by Ukrainians and by those seeking to denigrate or deny the existence of the Ukrainian nation. I focus in particular on the explosion of digital images featuring the vyshyvanka, which have been circulating since the Euromaidan of 2013-14, and on the history of the creation of World Vyshyvanka Day, now celebrated on the third Thursday of May and serving as a vehicle for mobilizing solidarity with Ukraine from Taiwan to the UK to Israel.

THE IMAGE OF THE HUNGARIANS IN JOACHIM WITTSTOCK’S WORK

Author(s): Sonia Tiru / Language(s): German Issue: 36/2024

This thesis deals with the image of the Hungarians as they are depicted in the work of Joachim Wittstock. Firstly, there is a theoretical part that presents the main concepts of the Imagology: image, auto-image, hetero-image, stereotype and prejudice. Secondly, there is a part that elicits the personal and the professional life of the author. Furthermore, the Nation of the Hungarians is illustrated, followed by an imagologigal analysis of the Hungarians in the work of Joachim Wittstock.

Ocena powojennej administracji lokalnej w latach 1944-1947 w kronikach parafialnych ks. Józefa Mroczkowskiego z Oleszyc oraz ks. Romana Penca proboszcza w Przeworsku

Author(s): Łukasz Podolak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

The article deals with the image of post-war administration in the eyes of the authors of the parish chronicles from Oleszyce and Przeworsk. The influence of administration on life of both authors was examined, and a comparison was made of administration in both chronicles at the same time. Its assessment in the period up to 1947 is completely different for both circuit breakers. Rev. Penc from Przeworsk was struck as a foreign element imposed on the authorities. Rev. Mroczkowski from Oleszyce, who operates in an area where the main threat of the OUN/UPA exists, has a completely different opinion about the supreme authorities. A counterweight to the Ukrainian underground are Home Army soldiers, who are expected to join the ranks of citizen militias, as well as district and municipal administrations. He is also the author of the Oleszyce family chronicle, which is responsible for its development because it includes members of the Polish anti-communist conspiracy. In comparison to the situation in Przeworsk, this power is not exerted oppressively towards the parish priest. What’s more, Rev. Mroczkowski co-created it himself, sitting on the Presidium of the District National Council in Lubaczów. The situation changed dramatically in 1947, when the administration in Oleszyce, as in the entire Lubaczów district, was taken over by communists. Since then, the threats of both chroniclers, as well as their basic power, being active.

Рейнекий и неговата история на Древна Tракия от 1595 година

Author(s): Georgi Mitrev,Jordan Iliev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2024

This article discusses a study by the historian Reineccius (1541 – 1595) on aspects of the history of Ancient Thrace and the Thracians. Until now, this work – part of a comprehensive exploration entitled “Historia Ivlia, Siue Syntagma Heroicvm” – has remained unknown to modern researchers and they assumed, that scholarly interest in Thracian history emerged only in the first half of the 18th century. The article begins with brief notes on Reineccius’s biography and works, followed by an overview of the information about the Thracians in his book. It is noted that, in the section titled “Regnum Thracium” the author sequentially examines ancient evidence concerning the geographical scope of Thrace, the strongest Thracian tribes, the Thracians outside Thrace; afterwards he structures the available at his time information of ancient writers about Thracian kings, specifying their family relationships. Special attention is given to the Odryssian kings, constituting about a third of the content. Other kingdoms, which today are considered part of the Thracian ethno-cultural community, are examined in separate sections: Bosphorus, Paeonia and Pannonia, Getica, Dacia and Moesia. The text is complemented by stems indicating established connections between dynasties and kings. Reineccius’s work is remarkable for its rigorous research elements and strict adherence to ancient texts, correctly cited. Undoubtedly, due to these qualities, this study on Ancient Thrace has influenced research on the topic for the next two centuries. Based on the presented facts, it is concluded that Reineccius’s work can be considered the first attempt to systematize ancient information about Thrace and the Thracians.

Jüdischer monarchischer Patriotismus im Alten Reich des 18. Jahrhunderts

Author(s): Ivan Parvev / Language(s): German Issue: 1-2/2024

One of the aspects of the history of the Jews in the Holy Roman Empire of the 18th century that has only been rudimentarily researched is the so-called Jewish monarchical patriotism, which I want to be understood as a new-coined scholarly term. In my view the Jewish monarchical patriotism consists of three components. The historically oldest, which can be traced back at least to the 17th century, was the public declaration of loyalty to the monarch. The second component, the joy over victories in war or peace, can be traced back to the 1740s, when rabbis in Berlin, Prague and Vienna began to congratulate rulers on winning battles in their sermons. The third element, the military component, emerged in the late 1780s, when Emperor Joseph II ordered the recruitment of Jewish men in his army. However, not all segments of the Jewish community stood behind such a patriotic stand. On the other hand, many non-Jews perceived the demonstrated monarchical patriotism as “quasi-patriotism” that could only feed anti-Semitic prejudices.
