The Franciscan Eusebio Fermendžin and His Work in Favor of Bulgaria

Author(s): Yordanka Gesheva / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2014

Euzebijo Fermendžin was born in Vinga, the Banat region (Romania) and was a descendant of catholicized Bulgarian Paulicians from Nikopol, who had left their homes at the beginning of the 18th century but haven’t lost their Bulgarian national consciousness. Fermendzhin was better known in Rome and the Vatican, in Vienna and Hungary, in Croatia, than he was in our lands, but spiritually, emotionally and creatively, he was also related to Bulgaria. He reached the highest positions in the Franciscan Order, he was a professor at Catholic schools and academies; a corresponding member of the South Slavic Academy of Sciences in Zagreb; for some time he was the head of the well-known multivolume edition of Luke Vading ”Annales Minorum”, in which were published documents and studies on the history of the Franciscan Order all over the world and others. Collector and compiler of ”Acta Bulgaria ecclesiastica ...”, a large volume of documents on Bulgarian church history from 1565 to 1799, published in Zagreb in 1887, and also the collections ”Acta Bosnae potissimum ecclesiastca ...”, of ”Acta Croatiae ...” and others.

The Personality of Kotys in the Ancient Literary Tradition

Author(s): Dobriela Kotova / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2014

Kotys remains in history as one of the most remarkable individualities in the first half of the 4th century BC. He was the great politician of the Odrysian kingdom, the king who turned the Odrysae into a factor of political life in the Balkans and in the Early Hellenistic world. His character and lifestyle were of particular interest to the ancient writers. Greek 4th century authors understandably painted his image in a deliberately maligned and biased manner, and cast the foundations for his extremely unfavourable reputation for centuries ahead. However, the intensive literary tradition surrounding his personality is actually fuelled by the great and unswervingly followed ambition of that Thracian ruler to find his prominent place in the Hellenic space and to become successfully an integral part of the trends in the Early Hellenistic world. The paper presents the evidence on the personality of Kotys, which has been left to us by authors from different historical periods and genres, and traces the evolution of his image.

Англиканската църква, Източното православие и България (XIX – средата на ХХ в.). Част първа

Author(s): Zhivko Lefterov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5-6/2014

The first contacts of the Anglican Church with Eastern Orthodoxy date from the early 17th century and they initiated a process of rapprochement, which is well known in the international historiography. Over the centuries, to this day it has a different intensity depending on the degree of theological negotiations and the political situation. This study traces the impact of this process among the Bulgarian Orthodox community and among Bulgarian society, how perceptions of the Anglican church were formed among Bulgarians and furthermore whether the topic went out of theological dialogue and was publicly known and discussed, and hence politically exploited. The author tracks the attitudes and positions of the representatives of the Anglican Church to the main events related to Bulgaria, and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the 19th and early 20th century. He reveals how individual public representatives tried to see farther than purely theological dialogue and sporadically, albeit unsuccessfully, to use thefavor of the Anglican Church to Eastern Orthodoxy in the context of the national tasks that had to be resolved. During the Second World War and the Cold War Anglican-Orthodox rapprochement became part of big politics and was influenced by Stalin‘s religious policy. Although Stalin initially relied on the Anglican Church to expand Orthodox influence in international organizations, subsequently he started considering it to be a competitor and opponent. As a consequence the dialogue was restored after the death of Stalin, but in the countries from the socialist camp and particularly Bulgaria the Orthodox Churches followed the Communist Party religious policy of „opening“ which aimed to use the churches in the big propaganda war between East and West showing that there was religious freedom behind the Iron curtain.

Dissident Mihai Botez on US-Romanian Relations Between 1968-1984, I

Author(s): Ana-Maria Cătănuş / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2016

Concluded in 1985, Mihai Botez’ analysis proposed an insight on how American-Romanian relations were seen and interpreted from Bucharest by a Romanian dissident. The survey contains five parts. The first four parts concentrate on the opening toward Romania initiated by the Nixon administration in 1968-1972, the development of US-Romanian relations in 1972-1976, the analysis of the impact of the human rights issue on US foreign policy (during the Carter administration), and the US-Romanian relations since 1980 to 1985. The last part contains Botez’ views on how American foreign policy influenced the evolution of the Romanian Communist regime and the perception of the general public toward America. Even if Botez’ study was not well received in the American circles, the text remains an original approach of American-Romanian relations during Ceauşescu’s regime.

ОБРАЗ ГДР В СОВЕТСКОЙ ПЕРИОДИЧЕСКОЙ ПЕЧАТИ 1950-1970-х ГОДОВ: ВЗГЛЯД СВЕРХУ И СНИЗУ

Author(s): S. Vershinin / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2014

The author outlines two stages of analysis of relations between the USSR and the GDR in the Soviet periodical press; the first stage (the 1950s – the 1960s) was characterized by the positioning of the USSR’s supremacy in all spheres of life in the GDR; during the second stage (the 1970s – the late 1980s) the cooperation between the sides had been emphasized. The article characterizes the difference between the ideological image of the GDR in the Soviet press and the perception of the GDR in the historical and daily consciousness of the USSR’s citizens, the existence of an inconsistent combination of distancing and aspiration for friendship with the population of the GDR in political journalism.

On Asymmetries of Scholarship and the Subalternity of Scholars from East-Central Europe: The Case of Philip Muehlenbeck’s "Czechoslovakia in Africa"

On Asymmetries of Scholarship and the Subalternity of Scholars from East-Central Europe: The Case of Philip Muehlenbeck’s "Czechoslovakia in Africa"

Author(s): Mikuláš Pešta / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

The essay explores the complexities of academic asymmetries, focusing on the subaltern status of East Central European scholars within global historiography. The author examines the case of Philip Muehlenbeck’s 2016 publication "Czechoslovakia in Africa, 1945–1968", which aimed to shed light on the under-researched Czechoslovak-African relations during the Cold War. Although Muehlenbeck’s work was timely and well received for its application of junior actor theory, the author ishighly critical of his research practices. He shows how Muehlenbeck relied heavily on, and closely mirrored, the earlier work of Czech historians Petr Zídek and Karel Sieber, without giving them sufficient credit. The review highlights how Muehlenbeck’s references to Czech archival sources are exclusively those already cited by Zídek and Sieber, suggesting that original archival work was minimal or absent. Furthermore, Muehlenbeck’s structural and textual parallels to Zídek’s and Sieber’s work raise ethical concerns of unacknowledged dependency.

Die Rolle Wiens bei der Freilassung spanischer Kriegsgefangener im Osmanischen Reich in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts

Author(s): Aneliya Stoyanova / Language(s): German Issue: 1/2025

In the second half of the 16th century, both branches of the Habsburg dynasty faced the Ottoman threat and the need for joint actions and cooperation. Most good examples of inner-dynastic cooperation in the communication with the Sultan are found in the field of diplomacy. The permanent diplomatic representation of the Austrian Habsburgs in Constantinople allowed them to act in favor of their Spanish relatives, who at that time preferred not to be officially represented in the Ottoman capital. Vienna’s diplomats insisted on the inclusion of Spain in the numerous peace agreements between the Emperor and the Sultan and secretly negotiated in the name of Philip II. By presenting chosen case studies the current article accentuates another significant example for cooperation, namely the efforts of the Austrian Habsburg diplomats to liberate Spanish subjects from Ottoman captivity. It focuses on Spanish prisoners of war after the defeat at Djerba in 1560. The story of veteran general Don Alvaro de Sande, well documented in archival sources, represents an excellent example for inner-dynastic cooperation, but it also offers valuable information on Early modern captivity and redemption practices (formal and informal) in the Mediterranean context of the intense Habsburg–Ottoman rivalry during the 1560s and 1570s.
